2017 HOWARD FOOTBALL

BISON FOOTNOTESThere’s A First Time For Everything: Saturday’s showdown will be the first meeting Howard and UNLV.

There’s A New Sheriff In Town: On Jan. 9, Howard University President, Dr. Wayne A. I. Fred-erick announced Mike London as the new football head coach. London comes to D.C. after serv-ing as an associate head coach/defensive line coach for the Maryland Terrapins. Before that, he was the head coach at Virginia and Richmond, respectfully, for eight seasons. In those eight years, London guided the Spiders to its first FCS Championship in only his first season while winning the 2011 ACC Coach of the Year with UVA.

Big Man On Campus: Before the season, senior running back Anthony Philyaw received national preseason recognition after a stellar junior campaign. On July 28, Philyaw was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Three days later (July 31), he landed on the STATS FCS All-America Third Team. On Aug. 8, Philyaw was on the preseason watch list for the National Performer of the Year Trophy and added to the Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List.

Make Way For The Class of 2021: On Feb. 1, Coach Mike London announced 23 student-ath-letes who signed their National Letter of Intent, making their decision to become a Bison official. The Class of 2021 consist of kids from 14 different states, including eight from the DMV area. As a result, the Bison had No. 1 recruiting class in the conference.

Football Is In His Blood: Freshman quarterback Caylin Newton made his decision to join the Bison Family after a solid high school career. Last season, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound quarterback threw for 3,322 yards with 33 touchdowns for Grady High School in Atlanta. He ran for 1,036 yards on 92 carries with 13 touchdowns. Football is no stranger to Caylin as his oldest brother, Cecil, was a former NFL center while former NFL MVP Cam is one of the most famous football players in the world.

Get In The Game, Save A Life: On April 11, the football team hosted a “Get in the Game” bone marrow registry event at the Blackburn Student Center. Student-athletes from all over the country signed up with an application and cheek swab in an effort to save lives. Coach Mike London is a marrow donor and his gift saved the life of his daughter. He wants to make sure no patient or family has to watch a family member die because they could not find their matching donor.THIS WEEK IN HOWARD FOOTBALLAUGUST 28 - SEPTEMBER 3Practice times tentative, check with Media Relations Office For Updates

Before coaching the Terrapins, he was the head coach at the University of Virginia and the University of Richmond, respectfully for eight seasons. A highly-regarded recruiter, London helped bring in four top-35 classes during his

tenure in Charlottesville and brought in two Virginia-bred five-star recruits in 2014 (247Sports). London led Virginia to an 8-5 season in 2011 and was named ACC Coach of the Year.

As the head coach at Richmond (2008-09), London captured 24 wins and led the Spiders to the FCS Championship in his first sea-son. He helped 28 Spiders achieve all-conference honors in just two seasons.

London played defensive back at Richmond (1979-1982) before playing one season for the Dallas Cowboys.
