Starting with Cubism, Surrealism and Abstraction, this course on modern art will examine the work of pioneering and controversial artists such as Picasso, Braque and Dali before moving across to the American art scene and the work of Pollock and Rothko. You will look at Pop Art in Britain and the US, as well as contemporary developments such as installation art.

Mountains swathed in mist, great chasms, Gothic ruins and shipwrecks; this is the stuff of Romanticism, a movement that swept across Europe in the 18th century.

Develop your knowledge of art history and appreciation in front of paintings. In this course you will explore the collections of London’s three main galleries, the National Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern. This course is an introduction to art with a political message. We will explore the relationship between art, politics and society from the mid-19th century to the present day. We will look at Courbet’s Realism in France, the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain, Russian Constructivism, American Realism and the Counterculture art movements of the 1960s and 70s.

This course is an introduction to the history of Hollywood, exploring the creation and evolution of Hollywood cinema through its studios, stars, directors and genres. You will learn aboutways these elements have been used to analyse and appreciate cinema. You will examine the work of directors such as D W Griffith and Alfred Hitchcock and of selected stars and studios of the ‘golden age’, and discover or revisit classic films such as Citizen Kane, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Public Enemy, Casablanca and many more.

This six-week course explores the private and public lives of women in 19th and 20th century London. Each week you will discuss a different theme including women’s work, friendships, advertising and law, offering an opportunity to reflect on the impact women had on wider social, cultural and political change. As part of the course you will use first-hand sources from the archives of Bishopsgate Institute and the Museum of London such as letters, photographs, clothing and recordings.

The first session will take place at Bishopsgate Institute and subsequent sessions will take place at either Bishopsgate Institute or the Museum of London.

Over the centuries, the East End changed from open fields and scattered villages to densely settled terraces and housing estates. This course will examine the development of London’s East End since the 16th century. You will look at the East End’s rich traditions – as a centre of crafts and industry, as the point of reception for immigrants from many lands and as the home of radical political and social movements. The course will incorporate site visits to locations such as Wapping and the older London docks, Spitalfields, Brick Lane, Bethnal Green and Stepney Green.

Jazz is at least a century old, yet it can still be difficult for new listeners while also attracting polarised opinions among experts.

This course will present a detailedhistory that will cover the earliest origins of jazz then present an overview of how the music developed up until the 1950s, using actual instrument demonstrations and audio and video examples.

The musical heritage of an entire planet can’t be covered in six hours, but what this course will do is offer a series of hands-on case studies of specific instruments from Turkey, Egypt, China, Japan, Australia and Ireland, using actual instruments alongside audio and video examples.

Each instrument will be explored from within its own tradition but we will also discover their unique individual attributes, which offer interesting insights into music in general, such as how natural resources affect instrument design and the relationship between instrument design and performance.

How did what we now think of as ‘classical’ music actually begin? This course charts the history of European art music from its origins up until the mid-18th century. You will explore the many influences that shaped the evolution of music as well as the development of important musical forms such as the concerto and the sonata. You will be introduced to some of the approaches and techniques used to capture the urban environment. Since the middle of the 19th century, London’s evolution has been recorded through a constant stream of images. Learn and improve your skills at capturing one of the most cosmopolitan and exciting urban spaces on the planet.

Over two weekends you will spend time in the classroom, and on the street, developing and applying methods of capturing transient moments. At the end of the course there will be a chance to review some of your images.

As London prepares to host the 2012 Olympic Games you can learn all about the ancient games in Olympia, which lasted for nearly 1000 years, then leap forward to 1896 when they start again in Athens. The four-year cycle continued with only a few gaps until the heady climax of a third hosting of the games for Great Britain. It all starts on 27 July.

Steven Barrett is a freelance lecturer in The History of Art based at the NationalGallery. He has a background in mentalhealth work and is particularly interestedin the psychology of art. He has taught in hospital schools and colleges across London. He is also a painter.

Mike Berlin is a historian of London with extensive experience in researching and teaching London’s past. He has a particular interest in the social history of early modern London and has worked extensively on the history of popular customs, work organisation, immigration and the impact of technological change on life in the metropolis.

Jessie Brennan studied MA Printmaking at the Royal College of Art (2007). Recent exhibitions include The Cut, SPACE, London (2011); Jerwood Drawing Prize, Jerwood Space, London (2010 & 2011); And Then Again, Lisbon City Museum, Portugal (2010). She isthe recipient of awards including Second Prize Winner, Jerwood Drawing Prize (2011) and gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Art and Design, (University of the Arts London 2009).

Diane Burstein is one of London’s best-known Blue Badge Tour Guides, thanks to six years as a contributor to LBC radio’s Steve Allen Show on the subject of ‘secret London’. She is the author of London Then and Now and has a particular interest in the capital’s social history, literary connections and theatrical scene.

Anne-Marie Craven is an art historian who has lived in London since the 1960s. She is responsible for the content of the art and history picture library, The Art Archive, which was formed in the 1980s. A Blue Badge Guide since 2008, she is also registered as a City of London and City of Westminster Guide. She is also secretary of the Friends of the National Army Museum.

Deirdre Daly is an experienced tutor who specialises in the history of ideas. Her current research is in the areas of life-writing, legal history and the history of philosophy. She has lectured at Goldsmiths College, Birkbeck College and the University of East London.

James Heard has worked at the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and, until recently, the National Gallery organising the adult lecture programmes as well as delivering talks on such diverse subjects as Cubism and Dutch portraits in the Golden Age, Gainsborough’s landscapes and the iconography of Italian Renaissance art. He divides his time between Rochester and Antwerp where he has his studio.

Richard Kearns has a wide range of photographic experience spanning 20 years. His images are frequently published in books and magazines and he exhibits and curates in British and International exhibitions. Constantly experimenting with techniques and media, he is keen to encourage others to engage with the diverse world of image making. He has taught at various learning venues across London and in Cambridge.

Rachel Kolsky trained as a City of London Guide and Clerkenwell & Islington Guide before gaining the Blue Badge in 2004, winning the prize for BestWritten Paper. In 2005 she and a colleaguelaunched www.goeastlondon.co.uk to encourage people to venture east of the City. Her love of research has always been linked to social history and her tours concentrate on the ‘human stories’ behind the buildings.

Carolyn Lefley is a London-based photographer. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows in London and Poland and published widely. She has won awards for both her images and innovate approaches to teaching photography. Carolyn has an MA in Photography and currently teaches photography at the University of Hertfordshire and University of the Arts London.

Leslie Primo has a degree in Art History and an MA in Renaissance Studies from Birkbeck, University of London. He has taught a variety of art history courses at University of Reading and City Lit. He has been based at the National Gallery in London for the past ten years, lecturing there as well as at the National Portrait Gallery, the National Maritime Museum and The Courtauld Institute of Art.

Roger Thomas is a music critic, editor and author of over a dozen books on a wide range of musical subjects. He has written for publications such as Gramophone, Piano, Music Teacher, Jazz Review, The Wire and Sound On Sound and contributed to numerous music reference books. He currently performs and directs contemporary music, edits JazzUK magazine, reviews for BBC Music and is a frequent university guest lecturer/presenter.

Colin Wills began his career in alcohol shaking cocktails in the 70s. He worked as a sommelier for a few years and for Oddbins across the North of England and Scotland, before arriving in London as the Fine Wine Manager for the City. He works at independent winemerchant Uncorked by day and teaches wine courses and hosts tastings by night.

John Wischmeyer presents specialised sessions linked to the BFI Southbank programme and a variety of adult education film courses at City Lit. Previously he programmed cinemas in west London and ran an independent cinema in Acton.

Aleks Zaczek-Gbiorczyk has an MA in History of Art and an MA in Arts Policy and Management. She is currently based at the National Gallery and also coordinates family education programmes at Windsor Castle. She has previously worked for a contemporaryarts consultancy and for various arts charities, and has also been a cultural journalist and a teacher in remote Nepali villages. She has experience in facilitating and coordinating education initiatives and in teaching various communities.

Gavin Campbell is best known for his campaigning consumer journalism on the BBC’s That’s Life programme. He is a Visiting Lecturer at Bucks New University.

Guy Meredith is an experienced scriptwriter, story editor and tutor. Please read the descriptions for each level and module to decide which one is most suitable for you. You may join either Module A or B for each level. If you are unsure which language level is most suitable for you, you can come to our Languages Open Day or complete a self-assessment test that will help you to determine which level and module you should enrol in. See the opposite page for details. The following level descriptions are for general guidance and there may be some variations within individual courses. For individual course outlines, please visit our website.

Languages for your Holidays This is a fast-paced course for those new to a language who wish to learn the basics for their trip abroad, in a lively and communicative environment. You will focus on the practical use of the language including how to order food in a restaurant, book a hotel room, buy a train ticket, give and understand directions. You will also develop an insight into the culture and customs of the country.

Level 1

Level 1: Module AAs a complete beginner, this course will help you gain a basic knowledge of the language. You will learn how to introduce yourself and others, and you will be able to speak about your family and friends, your work environment, your town/country and your likes and dislikes. By the end of the course you will be able to hold a basic conversation on everyday matters, be able to tell the time, count and speak about your hobbies.

Level 1: Module B This course is for students who have either completed Level 1: Module A at Bishopsgate Institute or have knowledge equivalent to a term’s tuition. You will deepen your knowledge of the subjects covered in Level 1: Module A and cover asking for directions, booking a hotel room and talking about your interests and hobbies. You will increase your confidence in dealing with social and professional situations.

Level 1: Module B Intensive As a complete beginner this course will help you gain a basic knowledge of the language. It covers the same material as our Level 1B course in 6 weeks, over the weekend.

Level 2

Level 2: Module AThis course is for students who have completed both Level 1 modules, or equivalent, and those who are confident in all areas covered in that level. This course is also suitable for students who have previously taken O level and / or GCSE, or equivalent, in the language and would like to revise their knowledge. You will learn how to conduct basic telephone conversations, some business vocabulary and become more confident in a wide range of topics. You will learn how to express yourself more precisely and be able to give more details about your own experiences.

Level 2: Module B This course is for students who have completed Level 2: Module A or who are confident in the topics and grammar covered in that module. You will learn to give details about yourself and your life experiences in the past tense. You will gain the confidence to express yourself more clearly on a number of topics, for example commenting on different cultural events you have seen, talking about your last holiday and responding appropriately in different social situations.

Level 3

Level 3: Module AThis course is for students who have successfully completed both level 2 modules or who are confident in using the grammar covered in the previous level. You will discuss a range of topics, such as cinema, work, social life and current affairs more freely. You may learn to write letters, memos and emails for professional purposes and will be able to understand short newspaper articles.

Level 3: Module B This course is for students who have either completed Level 3: Module A or who have the knowledge equivalent to about two years of study. You will develop your fluency and consolidate your previous learning. You will use short texts and audio and visual material and discuss topical and everyday issues with more ease.

Conversational

This course is for students whose language proficiency and confidence enables them to participate in debates, guided conversations and free exchanges.It would be suitable for those with an A level or equivalent in the language. You will use audio and visual material to stimulate discussion and you will make small presentations to the class.

Ramón Álvarez González has a Degree in Business and Economics (Universidad UNED), an MA in Librarianship, a Foundation Certificate in Teaching Spanish to Adults (Goldsmiths, University of London) and CAP equivalent to PGCE. He has been teaching Spanish to adults since 2001 in various institutions including Morley College. He is currently teaching at City University London and is an examiner for the International Baccalaureate.

Boris Born teaches German at all levels. He graduated with an MA in German and Philosophical Studies in 1983 and has been teaching German since 1993. He works at City University London in the undergraduate and the evening programmes. He also prepares German native speakers for their A-levels at a German school in Islington. At the University of Westminster, he translates and proofreads for the Ministry of Defence Languages Examination Board (Modleb).

Japanese

Magali Brenac teaches French at all levels. She holds a teaching qualification in French as a Foreign Language (Université Stendhal, Grenoble), and a TEFL qualification. Since 2004 she has been teaching French to adults and young people in institutions such as the University of Birmingham and the Alliance Française de Londres. She has a postgraduate qualification in English, specialising in modern British drama and is also working as a freelance translator.

Danièle Burke studied at the Université de Paris XII – Créteil in France and later moved to the UK where she obtained her teaching qualifications. She now works for language schools teaching French at all levels around the City, either on a one-to-one basis or in groups. She has also taught at institutions such as Bromley Adult Education College and Greenwich Community College.

Evi Campetella teaches Italian at all levels. She has a Degree in Italian and an MA in Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language from Perugia University. She has taught Italian at Perugia University and at the Italian Institute of Culture in Madrid and Prague. Currently, she teaches GCSE and A-level at Southwark College in London.

Language Tutors

María Collado Cañas is from Granada, Spain, and has 11 years’ experience as a Spanish tutor. She has taught Spanish in Russia and Spain. She has a Degree in Slavonic Studies, an MA in Russian Literature and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. Furthermore, she is qualified to assess Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) exams. She also works as a Spanish tutor and secondary teacher in Cambridgeshire.

Anna Costantino holds an MA in Education from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching and Management of Foreign Languages. She also holds a Teacher Training Certificate in TEFL and RSA/Modern Language Teaching from Westminster College. She has taught general and business Italian at all levels and has co-authored a textbook on business Italian (Obiettivo Professione, Bonacci Editore, Rome). She is currently studying education at postgraduate level at King’s College, London.

Berengere Decroux holds a Teaching Qualification in French as a Foreign Language from the Alliance Française of Paris (2006) and an MA in History of Film and Media from the University of Paris-Sorbonne (2003). She taught French at the Alliance Française of Paris and in London in a variety of external institutions, including the Foreign Commonwealth Office and the Cabinet Office. In addition, she worked in the publishing and theatre industry in Paris and London. Currently she is teaching French at all levels at City Lit and London City University and is a member of the Institute for Learning.

Natalia Fajardo graduated as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language at the University of Tarapacá in Chile and gained a Bachelor in Education in 1999. She has been teaching Spanish in Britain since 2002 and has also worked as a Spanish Assistant for the British Council in the Cotswolds. She currently teaches at City Lit and Essex County Council and works as a part-time translator and interpreter.

Language Tutors

Maria Isalt holds a Masters degree in Economic Studies from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and a teacher training certificate from International House. She has been teaching general and business Spanish for more than ten years. She also prepares groups for the official Spanish exams of Instituto Cervantes.

Alberto Lado Rey has an MA in Hispanic Studies at University College London. He has extensive experience in both secondary and adult education at independent schools and various adult education centres. He has been an assistant examiner for Edexcel since 2004. He currently combines his teaching at Bishopsgate Institute with similar engagements at the Open University and London Metropolitan University.

Gerard Laboisne holds a certificate in Modern Languages Teaching from Westminster College. He has been teaching French for general and business purposes at several companies including British Telecom, The Ministry of Defence, Barclays and Royal Bank of Canada for the past 20 years. He has also worked at various colleges including Westminster College, Hendon College, City and Islington College and City Lit. He also worked as a moderator for Thames Valley University and is an examiner for the Institute of Linguists.

Bruno Males gained a certificate in teaching French to adults (PTTLS, 2008) and since then he has been teaching French at all levels either on a one-to-onebasis or in groups. He is currently teaching French at City Lit where he prepares groups for the Diplôme d’études en langue française (Delf), A1 and A2 level.

Coraline Pawlak has a Degree in English Literature and Civilisation (Sorbonne Paris, 2009) and a Master’s degree in Teaching French as a Foreign Language (2011). She has also completed training in Teaching French (CUEF Linguistics Centre, 2010). Since 2007 she has been running her own classes, teaching French to adults. She is also working with different agencies, including Cactus Worldwide.

Language Tutors

Tina Tian holds an MBA degree from University of Hertfordshire, a Diploma in Chinese from Beijing Teachers’ College and a Certificate in Teaching Chinese from SOAS. She has been teaching Chinese at all levels in London since 2003 and is an examiner for Edexcel for GCSE / A-Level Chinese. Her teaching experience ranges from tuition for major companies in London to teaching organisations such as Cactus Language Training.

Laura Troisi has a Degree in English and Italian Literature from the University of Naples. She has a Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults from Goldsmiths, University of London. She has been teaching Italian at all levels in several organisations including City Lit, International House, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Goldsmiths, University of London, since 2005.

Katja Miarka teaches German at all levels and for different age groups. She holds a Degree in Modern Foreign Languages and Education from Humboldt University, Berlin, and obtained a Teaching Certificate in 2000. She currently teaches German at City University London and other institutions across London.

Takayuki Ogura has been teaching Japanese at all levels in London since 1989. He has studied various subjects related to teaching languages at Goldsmiths, University of London, including the Postgraduate Diploma in Management of Foreign Languages.He has acted as an external examiner for the University of Surrey and Queen Mary, University of London, and he is familiar with all Japanese exams in the UK.

Elena Ugarte graduated from Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona, and obtained the Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults from Goldsmiths, University of London, and the City & Guilds Further and Adult Education Teacher’s Certificate. Over the last 15 years, her professional activity has been focused on the design and delivery of Spanish courses at all levels in several adult education institutions and universities.

Language Tutors

Ching-Hui Wilkinson holds a Certificate in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from the National Taiwan Normal University as well as an MA in Finance from University of London. She is also a qualified web-based Mandarin instructor from the Chinese Culture University. She teaches Mandarin at all levels to both children and adults. She has taught at City University London, Hua Hsia Chinese School and the Language Centre London.

Whether you want to try your hand at acting or rekindle your passion for the stage, this is the course for you.

Level 1 – Introduction to Drama This course will introduce basic theatre skills, explore character creation, voice, posture, movement, projection and many other stage techniques. You will have the opportunity to work with a range of scripts, including excerpts from Arcadia, The Crucible, Equus, Art and A Streetcar Named Desire, and others by writers such as Tom Stoppard, Arthur Miller and David Hare.

Level 2 – Bishopsgate PlayersIf you like acting and want the opportunity to develop your performance skills, this is the course for you. Designed for people who have already tried and enjoyed performing, this course will offer further opportunities to develop voice, posture, improvisation, projection and characterisation techniques, as well as building your confidence as a performer. The course will work on a range of scripts from Shakespeare to contemporary classics such as Jerusalem, Noises Off, Warhorse, and Educating Rita.

These courses are run in conjunction with the national touring company Icon Theatre.

This term our repertoire will be four part acapella arrangements of Motown and Soul classics. The Bishopsgate Singers is open to anyone who wants to practise and enjoy singing in a warm and friendly environment. The group is 70 strong with a magnificent sound. Every term we have a mixture of new and regular singers, singing songs from assorted popular and world styles. All songs are taught by ear, and audio tracks of the parts are made available to practise at home. At the end of the term we will be having a special sharing session of the songs for friends and families.

Singing Solo Discover Your Voice Part 2 New

Ballroom Dancing is a popular style of social dance that is enjoying a huge comeback due to the success of television programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing. These courses will enable you to progress from the main Ballroom favourites of the Waltz and the Quickstep to the Tango, Foxtrot and Latin American dances. You will dance to Big Band style music with strict tempo covers of show tunes and classic favourites and all with the emphasis on enjoyment.

You will be encouraged to dance with different partners, in order to deepen your understanding of leading and following, and to enhance the social element of the class.

The nature of dance means that some repetition will always occur as you learn and perfect new steps. However, each course within a level will offer progression and variety for continuing students.

Level 2 courseThis course is for those who have completed a Level 1 course, or equivalent, and who are familiar with the line of dance, hold, basic steps and alignment. You will develop your understanding of the Waltz and Quickstep with a greater focus on timing and technique, and learn a variety of figures.

This introduction to Ballroom dance will focus on two popular styles – Waltz and Quickstep – and will guide you through the basic steps with the emphasis on enjoyment. Belly Dance

Learn the genuine southern Spanish art of Flamenco alongside the traditional and colourful Sevillanas dance. Known for its passion and rhythms, Flamenco dance combines graceful arm movements and virtuoso footwork. Sevillanas is often called the mother of many Spanish dances. With its festive and cheerful nature, it is one of the most ubiquitous couple dances of the regional Spanish repertoire.

Mette Bille is a professional singer / songwriter and a qualified music and singing teacher with several years’ teaching experience with adults of different musical backgrounds and abilities. She has a Bachelor of Music specialising in jazz/pop performance (Voice) and a B.Mus and Master of Music in composition from Goldsmiths College. She also completed a PGCE in Music at Goldsmiths College, London.

Betty Cid has had extensive experience in Spanish dance, both as a teacher and performer. She has a teaching certificate from the Spanish Dance Society and has studied under such teachers as Maria Magdalena, Ciro and Merche Esmeralda. She has taught in institutes and schools offering courses and workshops in London and Madrid, and is committed to passing on the traditions of Spanish dance through the art of Flamenco.

Gitika Partington has a BA (Performing Arts), MA (Choral Education) and LGSM (Jazz Voice) and is a singer, songwriter, vocal arranger, choral director and teacher. For more than ten years, she has been running a cappella harmony workshops for all ages and abilities across the UK. She is a member of the Natural Voice Practitioners’ Network – an organisation that believes vocalising, creativity and song should be accessible to all.

Danielle Satsias is a dancer, choreographer and teacher in salsa. She has trained with companies and teachers in the UK, including Salsa Tropical, and also trained at the famous Téatro América in Havana, Cuba. She teaches various classes across London in Cuban-style Salsa and Salsa freestyle as well as reggaetón.

Emma Weir is a Fellow of the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA), has a BA (Hons) in Professional Dance Development and has years of teaching experience, with her choreography being performed on children’s television and in West End showcases. She runs classes, courses and workshops across London and the South, including a large academy in Hampshire. She specialises in wedding dance choreography and professional dance teacher training, and she is also a published writer.

Anne White has studied Raqs Sharqi Traditional Egyptian Dance for more than 20 years, and has been a performer and teacher since 1990. She teaches complete beginners to professional performance level. She has been funded by Arts Council England and the Big Lottery, and has had articles published by the National Dance Teachers Association. She manages Planet Egypt, which promotes popular Arabic music, dance and culture.

Hatha Yoga

The Iyengar system of yoga emphasises precise and careful body alignment, muscular balance and maximum spinal extension. The postures, known as asanas, have a variety of different effects – stimulating, calming, energising, building stamina and vitality, promoting sleep and soothing internally. It helps release tensions, improves posture and gradually retrains the body to become stronger, more supple and healthy.

Brian Elliot trained on the first teachers’ training course at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Maida Vale in London in 1988,followed by a two-month intensive study in India. He has regularly taughtIyengar Yoga for health clubs, companiesand private classes. He has taught at Bishopsgate Institute for more than ten years.

Gabby Groves is a certified personal fitness trainer with more than ten years’ teaching experience. Her interest in core stability and back pain led her to Pilates. She studied with the Body Control Pilates, Stott and The Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute to complete her mat work and equipment training.

Marina is a qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher, also registered to 500 Hours Yoga Alliance, who has been successfully teaching Yoga for the past decade. She originally trained with YogaArts in Byron Bay, Australia, and has since completed further advanced training with the Life Centre in London. Her holistic style of teaching focuses on safety and fun and is influenced by her Pilates training, as well as her ongoing study and practice.

Pilates

Frances Newberry is our longest- standing teacher, having taught at Bishopsgate Institute since 1984. She trained under Sylvia Prescott in the Iyengar System and graduated in the presence of Mr Iyengar himself.

Georgina O’Connell qualified as a Pilates teacher with The Royal Academy of Dance. In addition to private classes, she has taught at Fitness First, LA Fitness and In Touch Pilates. She is also a trained ballet dancer.

Catherine Powell is a committed meditation teacher and practitioner with more than 12 years’ experience of daily personal practise and participation in many meditation retreats. She is a founding member of the London Meditation Project and is an artist.

We regret that concessionary rates cannot be applied for without documented evidence of your eligibility. If enrolling by post please make sure that you enclose a photocopy of the relevant document. If enrolling in person please bring the relevant documentation with you. Senior Citizens who have already submitted their concessionary ID may enrol at concessionary rates online.

Free places on coursesWe are pleased to offer a number of free places to people who find it hard to pay the full or concessionary rates. To apply for a free place, please contact the Courses Manager on 020 7392 9200 or email your contact details to [email protected]. Please note that free places are not available for the following courses: Intensive Public Speaking and courses at the Free Word Centre and Birkbeck. Free places on the course of your choice will be subject to the application process and availability.

Refunds and transfersYou may request a refund or transfer if it is within seven days of enrolment, providing your course has not started within that period. After this period, refunds or transfers may be requested up to three weeks before the start of the course but will be subject to an administration fee of 10% of the cost of the course. After this period no refunds or transfers will be given, with the exception of students transferring levels on language courses.

All refund and transfer requests must be received in writing. Please write to the Courses Manager, Bishopsgate Institute, 230 Bishopsgate, London EC2M 4QH or email [email protected]. Transfers are subject to availability and fee adjustments. We are unable to offer refunds to students who, for whatever reason, cannot attend the whole course.

Changing facilitiesChanging rooms are located on the lower ground floor and include shower facilities and lockers. To ensure safety and security, you will need a code to enter the changing rooms. This will be sent to all students enrolling in Performing Arts and Body & Exercise courses with your confirmation letter.

If you feel that we have not fulfilled your expectations or that we have compromised our policies, please contact us, as instructed below.

Compliments, comments and complaints proceduresWe are keen to make improvements for following years and would welcome and appreciate your input. At the end of each term you will have the opportunity to complete a Course Evaluation form. These forms remain anonymous and will be reviewed by the Courses team. You can also download a Compliments, Comments and Complaints form from our website or request a copy from our Reception. These forms will be reviewed by the Chief Executive’s office and, where appropriate, given to the relevant manager to deal with.


Course and class cancellationsIf enrolments fail to reach minimum numbers we may need to cancel or reschedule a course. Courses will normally be cancelled one day before the first class, except for language courses where the first class may take place before a decision is made. A full refund will be made or a transfer allowed.If a tutor is unable to teach a class we will try to arrange a substitute. When this is not possible, we will reschedule classes to an alternative convenient time. Refunds are not available for students unable to attend the rescheduled class. Should a class be cancelled for reasons beyond our control (e.g. flood, adverse weather conditions, security alert) we regret that no refunds will be given for the missed class.

Health Screening formsIf you are enrolling on a Performing Arts or Body & Exercise course you will need to complete a Health Screening form at the beginning of your first class. If you have a medical condition and are not sure whether a particular course is suitable, we recommend that you contact your medical practitioner for advice before enrolling. We regret that our Yoga and Pilates courses are not suitable for pregnant women.

If you wish to make a formal complaint please download and complete the Customer Complaints form from our website, or write to us addressing your letter for the attention of the Chief Executive. We will acknowledge receipt of any complaint received in writing within ten working days. The Chief Executive or their delegate will investigate the complaint through the formal procedures as set out in the Institute’s Procedures for Investigating a Complaint.
