Today’s Readings

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6. Jerusalem is a beacon of hope, not only drawing the exiled Jews back to their home but also attracting all the nations to worship the Lord.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3,5-6. The revelation given to Paul is that the pagans share with the Jews the same inheritance and the same promise through the Gospel.

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12. The wise men from the east follow the light of a star to find the newborn king of the Jews so that they can worship him and offer their gifts.

Next Week: The Baptism of the Lord - Year A Isaiah 42:1-4,6-7; Acts 10:34-38; Matthew 3:13-17.

REPARATION PRAYER GROUP resumes 21st January 2014. All welcome.

HOLY HOUR this Thursday from 8.00 to 9.00pm including Rosary, prayers, hymns and scripture reading. All welcome.

TUESDAY PRAYER GROUP meets in the Marian Centre every Tuesday morning at 10.00am. All welcome. For information phone Pauline Camilleri on 0407 417 039.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY runs every Sunday at the 9am Mass and is open to school age children. Two groups operate: children from Kindergarten to Year Two and the older group from Years Three to Six. The work they do is too difficult for preschoolers so we ask you not to send them with your older children. If you can help with children’s liturgy we would love to have you. You would be rostered on for approximately five Sundays each year. Please ring Vicki Ford on

9872 1632 after 6pm or any time on the weekend .

Have you considered leaving a gift to the parish in your will? If you would like further information please phone 9634 2622 for a confidential discussion.

LITURGY CORNER

The word ‘epiphany’ comes from a Greek word

meaning ‘manifestation/revelation’. In Matthew’s

gospel this episode is the first public manifestation of

Jesus (the wise men were probably magi/astrologers

from Persia and they represent all those who seek

God with a sincere heart). The feast of the Epiphany

came to be celebrated about the fourth century and

has always been a very important feast, especially in

the Eastern Churches. For the early Church, one of

the biggest problems they faced was the realisation

that even those who were not Jewish were invited to

faith in Jesus as Lord. Though his roots were in

Judaism, Jesus was of significance to all people who

sought the truth. The Summit

B ishop Anthony Fisher wrote to us about last year’s bushfires and the successful Bushfire Appeal launched in the Diocese. You will remember that fire

swept through the Blue Mountains, especially the Springwood parish, destroying houses, property and livestock. The Principal of the Springwood parish primary school lost his house while he was at work looking after the school children in his care. He had to walk the children to safety, some kilometres from the school. The old convent next to the parish school was totally destroyed. Bishop Fisher wrote: My Dear People, On 18 October 2013, I wrote to you about the devastating bushfires that ravaged parts of our State. I thanked many people and organisations for their quick and inspiring response in the hour of great need. Soon after, the Diocese of Parramatta launched an appeal. Many, many people dug deep into their pockets to assist those affected by the bushfires. Many of those persons donated anonymously, or through means that made it difficult to thank them individually for their contribution. I write now to thank each and every person for their donation. This generosity does not go unnoticed. It is a true testament to Christian solidarity; a testament to Christ’s words: “By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” (Jn 13:35) It has allowed CatholicCare Social Services to provide ongoing counselling and support in the Blue Mountains area for the foreseeable future. We undertake to continue to work with the Springwood Parish to support and rebuild the surrounding communities. I pray that you will have a most blessed Christmas celebrating the birth of our Saviour. Yours sincerely in the Infant Lord, Most Rev Anthony Fisher op Bishop of Parramatta.

M any thanks to those who sent cards and presents to the parish office for the priests and staff at St Bernadette’s. We were

overwhelmed by this generosity and thoughtfulness. Parishioners had already donated hampers for the needy, money for the school at Mt Druitt, and over $190,000 had come in by Christmas for the church rebuilding. On top of that, parishioners were mindful of the priests and staff who serve in many ways by remembering us, too, at Christmas. I am astounded at people’s care for us. Thank you for this kindness. You are generous and kind people. God Bless You!

NO SERVICES AT THE RETIREMENT VILLAGES THIS MONTH. Services will resume in February.
