1 Storm Trysail Club 2011 Block Island Race Week News • Monday 2011 Block Island Race Week News MONDAY JUNE 20, 2011 Today we begin the twenty-fourth Block Island Race Week. On behalf of our pre- senting sponsor, ROLEX USA, and Storm Trysail Club’s officers and members, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to New England’s finest sailing venue, Block Island, which is celebrating its 350th year in 2011. The local community and Storm Trysail Committees have been working feverishly preparing for what is sure to be another memorable week of competitive racing and catching up with old sailing mates. It’s our wish that you all enjoy the next five days, and bring away with you the fond memories of the week. Once again, we will host one-design and handicap racing sailors from around the country on three different Race Circles. Our Race Committees will again be staffed with the finest and most experienced Race Officers, committed to excel- lence in race management. They will again work under the watchful eyes of our On-the-water Co- Chairs, past Commodore Dick Neville and David Brennan, both of whom have serious years of race management under their belts. The Duty Office and The Tent remain at The Oar restaurant, as they have since 1997. We are so grateful for our continuing relationship with Steve and Rita Draper, the owners of The Oar and longtime residents on Block Island. Running an event of this size on an island away from home requires local partners. Over the years, the Drapers have been generous partners and instrumental to the success of this event. This is also true with Rally and Fran Migliaccio of the Block Island Boat Basin, and Cliff and Sands Payne of Payne’s New Harbor Dock. They have been critical to our success, as they have all simplified the task of organizing all the docking spaces of our fleet of Race Committee support boats and made them easily accessible for loading and unloading all the necessary race equipment. Our sponsors have yet again provided us with the support necessary to orches- trate another first class event. Events such as this one simply cannot happen without a loyal group of sponsors. Considering that BIRW is run exclusively by STC member volunteers, and that entry fees would only pay for a small percent- age of our total costs, I hope everyone understands and appreciates the contribu- tion they make and the value that these companies bring to this event. Please thank them for their sponsorship, and support them with your purchases. Lastly we thank you, the competitors, for your continued support of this and all Storm Trysail events. Sincerely, Nick Langone, Vice Commodore & Chairman Attention all Block Island Race Week competitors and guests. Allen Clark/PhotoBoat.com

RadioControl Sailing JoinsBIRWScheduleBoys with toys? Look againMaybe you’ve seen R/C sailboats around and have always wondered howthey really sail. Maybe you have a friend who has one, but you’ve never triedsailing it.

Well all that will change on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons asDave Ramos from Chesapeake Performance Models brings a small armada ofCR-914 radio controlled sailboats to Race Week. Take it from someone whohas sailed 914s for the past 15 years, STC Vice Commodore Nick Langone:“Yes, it takes a while to get your thumbs working properly, but, in the end, theguys that know how to sail the best win the races.

Ramos and STC sidekick Buttons Padin (Commodore of theLarchmont Model Yacht Club) will be at the STC tent withboats for all to sail starting at 1600 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Race Week. Monday’s agenda is freesailing and informal racing so sailors can “get their thumbsworking properly.” The real action starts on Tuesday withsingle-elimination racing from 1700 – 1830. Anyone cansign up to be part of Tuesday’s racing. Wednesday’s racing, however, will be the Championship of Champions as acrewmember from the boats leading each BIRW divisionwill sail against each other for all the marbles.

Prizes? Sure there are prizes. The winner of both the Tues-day and Wednesday racing will be presented with a CR-914 kit courtesy of Chesapeake Performance Models. And,if you don’t win, Dave Ramos will have kits you can pur-chase. That way, you can sharpen your skills in prepara-tion for BIRW XXV in 2013.

CR-914 radio controlled races will take place Mondaythrough Thursday.©

14 Storm Trysail Club 2011 Block Island Race Week News • Monday

Block Island Race Week XXIV presented by Rolex is serving as the 2011 IRC EastCoast Championship, the J/122 National Championship, and the J/109 East Coast Championship.

The IRC East Coast Championship has drawn 40 boats in four classes, with seven52-footers in IRC 1 including the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron’s J/V 52Anema & Core and TP 52 Invictus (Annapolis, MD). International entries includePeter Cunningham’s TP 52 PowerPlay (George Town, Grand Cayman) and RichardOland’s Southern Cross 52 Vela Veloce (St. John, NB).

This is the first major regatta for Ptarmigan, a new Ker 43 owned by Larry Dickie(Greenwich, CT; IRC 2). “We look forward to participating,” said Ptarmigan Proj-ect Manager Chad Corning (New Rochelle, NY). “This is the fifth boat that we’vehad in the last 20 years, and traditionally we compete only in distance races, butwe’ve always wanted to do Block Island.”

Four J/122s are vying for the National title. Bill Coates’ Otra Vez (Sugarland, TX;third in class in ’09) will be facing tough competition from Mike Bruno, Tom Boyleand Jim Callahan’s Wings (Irvington, NY; 4th in ’09), George Marks’ GeorgetownIII (Roslyn, NY) and Andrew Skibo’s Plum Crazy II (Ocean City, NJ).

In 2009, Jeff Willis’ Challenge IV won a 16-point tiebreaker to top the always tightJ/44 class over Jim Bishop’s Gold Digger (Jamestown, RI). As Bishop has said, any of the five 44 One-Designs competing is capable of winning races, includingDon & Rick Rave’s Resolute (Huntington Bay, NY), Bill Ketcham’s Maxine (Green-wich, CT), and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Glory (New London, CT).

Fifteen J/109s are contesting the East Coast Championship. The boat to beat isRick Lyall’s Storm (Wilton, CT), the winner of this class by nearly 10 points in ’09.

Four of the top five finishers in 2009 are back, including Don Fillipelli’s Caminos(Amagansett, NY; 2nd in ‘09), Ted Herlihy’s Gut Feeling (South Dartmouth, MA),and Bill Sweetser’s Rush (Annapolis, MD).

Thirteen boats are sailing in the Swan 42 class, including the winner in 2009, KenColburn’s Apparition (Dover, MA). Others to watch are Wendy & Phil Lotz’sArethusa (Newport, RI; 3rd in ’09) and Brendan Brownyard’s Barleycorn (BayShore, NY; 4th).

The Farr OD class comprises four Farr 30s and four 40 ODs. Look for a strong per-formance from Preben Ostberg & Bud Dailey, Jr.’s 40 Tsunami (Rockville, MD),and Jim Richardson’s 30 Barking Mad (Boston, MA).

The J/105 class holds the longest one-design participation record in Race Weekhistory, and 14 105s are competing this year. “There has been J/105 class racingat Block Island since 1996, and we have been here every year,” said Nelson Wei-derman (Wickford, RI), the owner of Kima. “It’s a family vacation for us. The familything is big for me, and a weeklong event is unusual, so there will be beach time for all who do not race.”

Race Week marks the fleet racing debut of the new J/111 class, with four boatscompeting: Paul Strauch’s Andiamo (Douglaston, NY), Sedgwick Ward’s Bravo(Shelter Island, NY), Doug Curtiss’ Wicked 2.0 (South Dartmouth, MA), andMaryEllen & Dave Tortorello’s Partnership (Fairfield, CT).

“I have no idea what we’re in for this year,” said Dave Tortorello. “The J/111 israted pretty well and is said to be much lighter and faster [than the 122] down-wind, but upwind will be the question. We’ll have to wait and find out.”

Storm Trysail Club 2011 Block Island Race Week News • Monday 15

Race Week Raffle Supports Island ProgramsIn 2009, the Storm Trysail Club’s Race Week Raffle raised more than $16,000for Block Island charities. The Block Island Maritime Institute is a non-profit maritime and marine sci-ence education organization whose mission is to foster the preservation ofmaritime skills and traditions, and to promote awareness and knowledge ofmarine ecology.

Whitey RussellRace Week’s “Go -To Guy”

Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex is the well-or-ganized, smooth running event that it is – both on and off thewater – thanks to the tireless efforts of people like WhiteyRussell of Newport, RI.

“The first Race Week Whitey ever did was in 1969,”saidStorm Trysail Club Commodore Eric Kreuter. “In those days,Whitey was sailing on a number of different boats, but he didat least four Race Weeks sailing on Russell Hoyt’s boat Des-tination. Russell, who was a Storm Trysail Past Commodore, was quite a character, and Whitey fit right in with him andhis crew. Peter ‘Luigi’ Reggio told me that he remembersdoing his first Block Island Race Week in 1969, and thatWhitey was there. Whitey was a kid with an impish grin who was always look-ing for trouble. He liked to get into trouble…and he still does!”

“When you talk to Whitey and see his smile, you can just tell he’s thinking,‘What can I do to get into trouble?’” says Kreuter. “I remember skiing with himin Vermont about 20 years ago. We were sitting in a bar after we finished ski-ing, and he picked up his glass and started chewing the rim off it!”

“I think Whitey has done just about every Race Week, either as a competitor oras a committee member, except for maybe three years when he was in the Pa-

cific in the early ‘80s,” Kreuter continued. “I think his firstRace Week as a committee member was 1989. We borrowboats for this regatta, and Whitey brings a lot of them – including his own – over to the island from his home onAquidneck Island. He goes back and forth until they’re allout here.”

Whitey also functions as an unofficial Race Week deliveryservice. “He packs up two of his cars and brings over abunch of Race Week clothing every year,” said Kreuter.“He also drives trucks and brings things over by boat –whatever it takes to get stuff out here.”

When a problem with Race Week logistics or organizationarises, Whitey is known as a man to ask for a solution. “Hebails us out,” Kreuter explained. “Marcy Trenholm, our Ex-ecutive Director, spends six months organizing this event, and if she runs into a problem all of a sudden, generally

with something like getting clothing out to Block Island, Whitey will jump in andsay, ‘No problem. I’ll take care of it.’ And he does! He’s been helping us out inthat regard for the last four or five Race Weeks, in addition to bringing his boatover here and serving on the Race Committee for the last ten years. Whitey’swife, Lori, is also now helping out at Race Week, and it’s great to have them outhere together.”

It’s been 42 years since Whitey’s first Race Week, and his grin’s as impish asever – perhaps even more so – and if there’s any trouble to be found, you canbet he’ll find it. Says Kreuter, “He’s an absolutely lovely character!”
