Parent tip- Discuss with your student that animals need air, water, food, and shelter. Help develop these vocabulary words throughout the discussion. Also discuss how having a classroom pet would help students by having a real-life example of an animal and its basic needs.
Next, click and listen to Which Pet Should I Get? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psCzO1TlJlU by Dr. Seuss to form ideas and connect to the story. Think of a classroom pet that you would like.Parent tip- Take a moment to research the basic needs of the animal they choose and determine how each of the pet’s basic needs will be met.
Finally, students must explain how the needs of the pet will be met in a classroom setting. Students should draw a picture and label the needs of the specific pet. They should explain why each thing is needed for the pet. If multiple pets are thought of, compare the needs of each pet, even if the needs are similar, the pets might meet those needs in different ways, depending on their adaptations and how their bodies work (structure and function).

• Take a look at this picture of a polar bear.
• Make a science journal out of a couple of pieces of blank paper. Write a journal entry about whether the polar bear would make a good class pet or not considering the polar bear’s needs. Journal entries can be made describing the needs of the polar bear and explanation for each need. Great job future scientists!
