Birdsong Engagement Tablet

George & Sue Birdsong funded an academic study

to investigate the impact of 24/7 digital bedside

engagement technology (simple touchscreen

computing) on the quality of life and cognitive

abilities of older adults in Assisted Living and

Nursing Center care at Westminster-Canterbury.

We measured and found high hours of voluntary

usage/enjoyment, elevation in mood, increases in

cognitive ability, and a reduction in caregiver stress.

24/7 bedside computing works!

Unfortunately, we found the software we had been

using for The Birdsong Initiative was simply too

expensive for most families and providers for

individual bedside use.

Out of a moral obligation to find a way to bring the

benefits we found in the study to the field, we

partnered with a French company TMM Solutions

to create our own in-room engagement tool called

“The Birdsong Tablet: Engagement That

Entertains”. This technology will be less than your

discounted in-house cable TV service to operate.

TMM Solutions had vast experience in hospital

info/tainment bedside flatscreen technology. Our

partners are equally passionate about spreading

affordable and accessible bedside engagement

technology to every older adult who can benefit.

While many simple games and experiences are offered to those with cognitive limitations,

the tablet will be enjoyed by those of all cognitive levels. For example, through a unique

partnership with Virginia Wesleyan University, noncredit courses in art, history, political

science, psychology, religion, popular culture, and other subjects are recorded and available

on each tablet. This engagement opportunity created by two leading organizations is a key

element to successful aging and now all older adults can continue the adventure of lifelong

learning through The Birdsong Tablet. Carefully curated content in religion, travel, and other

subjects of academic interest are a part of the software. Evidence-based brain games that

adjust to the skill of the person are also a part of the Birdsong Tablet.

For a 50 bed rehab/longterm

center, capital costs are

$157,238. More signifiant, the

ongoing operating costs are

only $8,000 per year for 50

residents. This is only $13 per

month per tablet. Due to the

economies of scale, the

monthly costs of Birdsong

Tablets decrease as the

number of units increase.

Project Look Ahead Engagement Via Technology

All Day Conference on Feb 9th, 2018

Westminster-Canterbury on Chesa-

peake Bay is hosting an all day confer-

ence centered around adopting engage-

ment via technology for older adults.

Our goal is that in 10 years from now,

each nursing home in the United States

will have in-room engagement tablets.

We are inviting industry leaders to visit

our campus and discuss ways of improv-

ing the quality of life of residents across

the nation. We will also use this opportunity to show-

case the first version of the Birdsong Tablet. Westmin-

ster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay has invested corpo-

rate resources in creating a software meant to engage

older adults. We are doing this as a service to our resi-

dents and residents across the nation. Our engineer

partners will also be at this event listening to feedback

and suggestions. We will use this feedback to create the

ideal software for engaging older adults. You are invit-

ed to this event and we looking forward to seeing

you on our campus!

value of integrated one-stop information

sharing (portal services) to your community

for independent living (and all levels of

well with other software.
