Insight into the Whole Plant BioWin 4.0 wastewater process simulation software ties together biological, chemical, and physical process models to provide insight into the whole plant. BioWin is used world-wide to design, upgrade, and optimize wastewater treatment plants of all types.

BioWin simulations help engineers and operators better understand the plant, and make decisions that reduce capital and operating costs.

BioWin 4.0 Features: An integrated biological model matrix that concurrently models activated sludge, anaerobic digestion and other key plant processes. Accurate and comprehensive, the integrated BioWin model provides users with confidence in their simulations.

◙ Nitrous oxide emission modeling. BioWin provides an overall picture of

key emissions and dynamics of N2O, CH4 and CO2 gases.

◙ Anaerobic digester pH and biogas composition (CO2, CH4, H2) modeling for

energy recovery and energy neutrality analysis.

◙ Plant-wide pH and alkalinity calculations as a foundation for accurate

modeling of all pH sensitive processes

◙ Real-world examples and default parameters for models. Leveraging over

20 years of simulation expertise and research, good model default parameters allow users to complete simulation projects sooner and save time in model calibration.

Page 2: BioWin 4.0 Features - EnviroSimenvirosim.com/files/downloads/BioWin40.pdf · Nitrous Oxide Modeling Nitrous oxide is a major component of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater

Nitrous Oxide Modeling Nitrous oxide is a major component of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment plants and is the subject of much research and analysis within the wastewater process community. BioWin 4.0 now simulates the production and emission of nitrous oxide, along with methane and carbon dioxide, to provide a complete picture of GHG gas emissions from wastewater treatment facilities.

Nitrous oxide production has been incor-porated into the BioWin Activated Sludge Digestion Model (ASDM) as three process-es: by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in nitrification, by AOBs in nitrifier denitri-fication, and by heterotrophs in denitrifi-cation. Nitrous oxide production varies rapidly with changes in process condi-tions. The BioWin dynamic N2O model now allows users to evaluate N2O produc-tion scenarios and support compliance efforts where necessary.

Trickling Filter A new trickling filter (TF) element has been added to the BioWin model li-brary. The TF element can be configured for various packing types such as Rock, Horizontal, Structured Plastic (crossflow), Loose Media (random), and

Custom. The depth of the filter unit is modeled in three equal layers to simulate oxygen levels and removal gradients from top to bottom. The number of layers for modeling the biofilm, the thickness of the liquid layer on the biofilm, and the bound-ary layer thickness can all be configured to closely match the existing filter unit.

The TF element aeration can be specified by dissolved oxygen concentration or air flow rate, at constant or scheduled pattern values. Gas phase modeling can be used to determine DO concentrations throughout TF model depth. Local unit parameters such as temperature, biofilm and kinetic parameters can all be user specified. The new TF element allows user to explicitly model a trickling filter unit and further expands the flexibility of BioWin.
