A BioQUEST Introduction to Geographical Information Systems Included this year in the BioQUEST curriculum is this introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS). GIS technology is increasingly used in land management, environment al conservation, government assessment and planning, as well as a number of business and criminal justice applications. GIS enables us to visualize and manipulate large amounts of data, especially data with a spatial component. We should point out that al l applications in this folder are for Wi n95/98/NT operating systems. You will be able to view the PowerPoint, Adobe, and text files on other operating systems, but the applications will run only in a Windows environment. To introduce GIS to the BioQUEST curriculum we are using a free GIS viewer called ArcExplorer. It is  part of a product family from the Environmental Systems Research Institute ( ESRI). This company is a leading producer of GIS software and has cooperative agreements with EPA, FEMA, the Census Bureau, and other agencies. Having ESRI software is useful because there are not many standards in this emerging field and a great d eal of online data is in ESRI formats ( ArcData Online, USGS EROS data). Included in the BioQUEST package is an ArcExplorer suite (more info at ArcExplorer Home ) this includes the application, a manual (containing a tutorial for the program), and several applications that allow the importation of certain file types. A. Here are the Steps We Recommend to get started: 1. View th e “What is GIS” PowerPo int fi le in thi s folde r, or vis it thi s ESRI website. There are links t o many, many sources of maps, s oftware, agencies and projects here. Not for the fai nthearted. We hope you will explore t he offerings here and comment on t he material. 3. Read the readme file! I know, I know we all hate to do this, but the files in the ‘ArcExplorer’folder have cryptic names – and this file is your map.

4. Unpack the files that you want to use and dig in! I suggest you start with ArcExplorer itself.

B. After you have done the above – here are some sites you might find interesting:
