rainforests. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) that come from air conditioners, foam packaging,
refrigerators and aerosols are really damaging greenhouse gases. You can also get
Methane which is released from decaying organic matter, and nitrous oxide which comes
from car exhaust, agricultural fertilisers and power stations.
Evidence for rapid climate change and the effects global warming is having on our
planet is really problematic. Sea levels are rising, the global sea level rose about 17cm in
the past century. This is a serious threat to those who live near the coast of oceans. What is
even more frightening is that the rate in the past decade is almost double that of the last
century. The global temperatures are rising, as are the ones of the oceans. We continue to
face shrinking ice sheets in areas like Greenland and Antarctica. Data from NASA's
Gravity Recovery and Climate experiment show that Greenland has lost 150 to 250 km 3 of
ice per year between 2002 and 2006. The Arctic sea is continually declining in both extent
and thickness. Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world. Since the
Industrial Revolution, the acidity of ocean waters has increased by approximately 30
percent.
Experts say we need to switch to cleaner energy like natural gas, wind and solar and move
toward more energy efficient cars and home appliances. It is very important to really try and
minimise the amount of carbon dioxide that is polluting our atmosphere, and this amount is
definitely caused by humans and their activity. We need to encourage people to use
alternate sources of power such as green energy rather than burning fossil fuels (which will
not last us too long now anyway). Solutions could be done using solar panels, wave energy,
wind energy, hydrogen powered cars. With our growing population it is vital that the next
generations are taught about these methods to slow down the speed at which global
warming is going at. After all it is our planet and so it is our job to take care of it all, but this
can only be done if we start working together.
