Biological Science – Botany Degree Requirements

Biological Science ‐ Botany Requirements:Note: some of the botany courses below are offered sporadically, so course substitutions may be made with department approval.

Introductory Core Course Requirements:

Notes:All Students are required to take two semesters of introductory biology courses. The two tracks are not interchangeable; students must complete all of one or all of another. Both tracks present the same information, they just do so in different orders.

• LIFE102 & LIFE103: standard introductory courses as offered by most institutions. This is the track we prefer students take. Both courses include associated mandatory labs.

• BZ110 (lecture); BZ111 (lab); BZ120 (lecture and lab combined): acceptable to clear major requirements, but non‐standard intro courses.

Remaining Biology Core Requirements:

Notes:• All of these courses are mandatory and must be completed before graduation.• This is not the order in which the courses must be taken – it is simply the list of 

requirements. Some courses may be subbed based on availability.• The semesters in which these courses are taken can vary ‐ see course catalog for

Physical Science Requirements:

General Chemistry Requirements

Notes:All Students are required to take two semesters of general chemistry. General chemistry needs to be started as soon as possible (your first year).

• 1st semester: CHEM111 (lecture/recitation) and CHEM112 (lab).

• 2nd semester: CHEM113 (lecture) and CHEM114 (lab).

Prerequisites: MATH118 is required for CHEM111/112; MATH124 is required for CHEM113/114.

Organic Chemistry Requirements

Notes:There are two different organic chemistry tracks from which to choose. The two tracks are not interchangeable; students must complete all of one or all of the other. 

• One semester track: CHEM245 (lecture) and CHEM246 (lab).• Two semester track: CHEM341 (first semester lecture),  CHEM343 

(second semester lecture), and CHEM344 (lab that typically is taken with CHEM343). 

Selection of organic chemistry tracks will be dependent on one’s career goals. For instance, medical programs require the two semester track of organic chemistry. Your advisor(s) will help you decide which track to pursue.

Biochemistry Requirements

Notes:There are two different biochemistry tracks from which to choose; neither track has labs. Prerequisite: organic chemistry.• One semester track: BC351• Two semester track: BC401 (first semester) and BC403 

(second semester).

The one semester track (BC351) is sufficient for almost all career and graduate program goals. This is the class that nearly every biology or zoology student takes, regardless of future plans.

Physics Requirements

Notes:Two semesters of physics are required of all students. There are two tracks from which to choose. Both semesters of physics for both tracks have associated recitations and labs.

• PH121 & PH122: Algebra based courses; prerequisite: MATH125• PH141 & PH142: Calculus based courses; prerequisite: MATH126. 

The algebra based physics courses (PH121 and 122) are the track that almost all students pursue. They will cover requirements for any future graduate program or career goal.

Calculus Requirement

Notes:All students are required to take one semester of calculus.• MATH155: Calculus for Biological Scientists. Prerequisite: MATH125.

• MATH160: Calculus for Physical Scientists. Prerequisite: MATH126.

MATH155 is sufficient for all future graduate programs and career goals, and is the choice of nearly every Biology of Zoology major.

Statistics Requirement

Notes:All students are required to take one semester of statistics. Both courses are extremely similar; the choice between statistics courses is not important and will not impact future prospects. • STAT301: Introduction to Statistical Methods. Prerequisite: MATH117.

• STAT307: Introduction to Biostatistics. Prerequisite: MATH117.

All University Core Curriculum Requirements:Notes:• These are university‐wide  “general education” requirements  ‐ they are the same for all majors on campus. Honors

CO150 must be taken within a student’s first 60 credits at CSU.

Advanced Writing is typically taken junior or senior year. Students in the Department of Biology usually take: CO300, CO301B, or JTC300 for this requirement.

There are many  course options for these categories that can be found in the link above. Students are free to take whichever course(s) sounds most interesting for each category.

These two courses are already a part of the Biology Core Requirements. They are not extra courses to take here. Rather, they are used in conjunction to fulfill this AUCC category.
