Biological Diversity
Definition:
There is also variation between individuals in the same species. Just look at your friends around the room! So more individuals of the same species also increase biodiversity.

In your table group, you will be given a utensil that represents your "beak", what you use to pick up food. Each group will have a different beak, so that each table group represents a different type of bird.
There are 4 types of food. You're flock will be able to test out their ability to "eat" each food, transferring the food from one bowl to another, for 2 minutes.
After you have tried all the foods, you must decide which one your beak type is best at eating, and will therefore have the highest rate of survival.
When 2 or more groups have chosen the same food source, they will compete. The winner gains access to the food source, while the loser needs to find food elsewhere.
After 2 unsuccessful competitions, that bird becomes extinct.

Darwin's Finches Analysis Questions
1. Define the following: Function Structure
2. Using examples from this simulation, how are living things best suited to their environment?
3. When 2 different species compete for the same food source, what happens? Is this always the case?
4. "Form follows function" - what does this phrase mean in the case of living things?

Darwin Awards
Go to: http://www.darwinawards.com/, and find a story that interests you.
Summarize it in your notes to be ready to share.
How does one get a Darwin award? How does this relate to the "survival of the fittest"?
September 12, 2017
Survival of the FittestThe principle that individuals best suited to their environment will:- live longer and healthier lives- be more likely to reproducethan those who are not as well suited. Over a LONG time, the population will be more like those successful individuals.

Discuss: Do species always choose to compete for the ideal food source? Or do they choose to take on food source they are less successful at to avoid competition?

Variation 2 types
Variation among different speciesAll organisms have a common ancestor somewhere in their history. Over time, different species have evolved. Ex: The lynx, bobcat, cougar and your house cat all have a common ancestor. Over time, these cats have evolved into a variety of similar, yet separate species. This process is called speciation. Ex: Darwin's finches lab

Variation 2 types
Variation within the same speciesWe can easily tell the difference between a cougar and a house cat. But do all cougars look the same? Within a species, genetic diversity causes individuals in the same population to be different.
Do all species have the same amount of variation within? Can you tell the difference between 2 individual dandelions? 2 pieces of grass?
