Tina Chambers, ChairTrustee since 2012

Tina Chambers, BSc (hons) in Specialist Nursing Practice (Tissue Viability) Trustee since 2012.

Tina has been a member of the Tissue Viability Society for 20 years and was co-opted to the Council of Trustees in April 2011 in order to act as co-chair a project of the Pressure Ulcer reporting consensus working group. She has been a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Tissue Viability for 15 years during this time she has worked in both primary and secondary care her current role is within an Acute Hospital Trust

She has a keen interest in sharing and developing best practice in order to improve patient safety. Tina believes in keeping things simple and practical. Tina has sought to find answers as to the who and the why decisions are made and this has led to an interest in the politics of wound care and working with commissioner, strategic health authorities and the department of health in order to raise awareness of Tissue Viability and to improve communications between these organisations and the Tissue Viability Practitioners.

Maureen Benbow Trustee since 2011

Maureen is a senior lecturer at the University of Chester teaching a range of courses including Tissue Viability to pre-registration, post-registration nurses and other healthcare professionals. Her clinical background is in trauma, orthopaedics and Tissue Viability and she has published widely on aspects of Tissue Viability including Evidence Based Wound Management, in 2005. Maureen’s special interests are in pressure ulcer prevention, wound assessment and management, law and ethics. She is keen to help develop post-registration nurses to reach their academic potential and so improve patient care.

Pauline GilroyTrustee since 2009

Pauline is a Tissue Viability Clinical Nurse Specialist at West Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 1996, Pauline’s first appointment was in a Nurse Led Unit in East London where she quickly developed a passion for Tissue Viability. After broadening her experience in nursing and Tissue Viability in a variety of clinical areas, Pauline became a Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist in 2000, moving to her current position in 2003. In 2009 she completed her MSc in Advancing Practice – Tissue Viability, undertaking project work looking at the development of RCA’s for pressure ulcers.Pauline’s special interests are pressure ulcer, larval therapy and topical negative pressure therapy.

Heidi GuyTrustee since 2011

Heidi is a Tissue Viability Clinical Nurse Specialist at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and, since July 2010, been an Honorary Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire. Her passion for Tissue Viability began in 1987 when she first became interested in pressure ulcers. She has been a member of the Tissue Viability Society since 1988. Heidi has a particular interest in pressure ulcers and topical negative pressure therapy and has published several articles in nursing journals. She also greatly enjoys delivering education in Tissue Viability.

Alison Hopkins, Chair 2011-13Trustee since 2010

Alison has worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Tissue Viability in east London since 1995. She is CEO of a new community interest company called Accelerate CIC, providing specialist wound and lymphoedema management to the NHS. Alison has a number of publications and is a recognised national speaker. Her key areas of clinical interest are leg ulcer management, the role of gait in venous disease, the role of tailored compression therapy and psychosocial impact of disease (Alison has an MSc in Psychology and Health). As a CEO of a new start-up company, Alison has a keen interest in the new NHS landscape and impact on clinical care, outcomes and how wound care can be delivered differently.

Elizabeth McGinnis (nee Scanlon)Trustee since 2012

Elizabeth works as a Nurse Consultant in Tissue Viability at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. She has worked in Tissue Viability for 20 years with the first 10 years in the community services in Leeds. Her special interest is pressure ulcer prevention, particularly heel pressure ulcers. The healing of heel pressure ulcers was the subject of her PhD which she completed in 2011. She also works in Tissue Viability research and is a co-applicant or principle investigator of several large NIHR funded and other studies. She has published widely in all aspects of TV including pressure ulcer prevention and management, VAC therapy for pressure ulcers, wound infection prevention and management and Cochrane systematic reviews.

Clare MorrisTrustee since 2012

Clare has been Clinical Services Manager at Activa Healthcare since January 2010. Before this she has nearly 20 years experience as a Tissue Viability Nurse both in the acute and community settings in North Wales. She has published widely on the subject including a book, chapters within books and over 100 journal publications. During her time as a Tissue Viability Nurse Clare had a particular interest in pressure ulcer risk assessment scores and developed the Medley score which more recently became the Maelor score. She also developed an award winning pressure ulcer documentation ‘performance Indicator’ audit tool with her colleague. Clare has a long history as a member and was a previous Trustee of the TVS in the mid 1990’s.

Andrea NelsonTrustee since 2011

Andrea Nelson, PhD RGN, is Professor of Wound Healing and Head of School of Healthcare, University of Leeds. She leads research into the prevention and management of chronic wounds and, in collaboration with colleagues across the University, her department conducts primary research in the assessment of risk, prevention, diagnosis, management and experience of chronic wounds and their complications. Andrea is deputy chair of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) External Devices and Physical Therapies Panel, a member of the HTA commissioning board, a Cochrane editor and author and on the editorial board of a number of nursing and Tissue Viabilty/wound care journals. Additionally she reviews for several clinical journals and funding bodies, and referees the grant proposals and final reports of national and International research funders.

Jane Nixon Trustee since 2006

Professor Jane Nixon is Deputy Director of the Clinical Trials Research Unit, University of Leeds. The unit conducts large national and international clinical trials in cancer, stroke, cardiology, mental health and skin. Jane has developed a research career in the fields of pressure ulcer prevention and Tissue Viability. She has worked on an international level for the past decade, including collaborative systematic reviews and publications, guideline development and pressure ulcer prevention research projects. In 2008 she led the successful collaborative £2million, 5 year NIHR Programme Grant application entitled Pressure Ulcer PRogranne of ReSEarch (PURPOSE). Jane has also worked on the EPUAP/NPUAP Risk Assessment and Skin Assessment prevention guidelines, is current Treasurer of the TVS and became an EPUAP Trustee in 2008.

Nikki StubbsTrustee since 2013

Nikki Stubbs qualified as a registered general nurse in 1986 in Leeds. In 1991 she became a District Nursing Sister following completion of the District Nursing Certificate. It was during this time that she developed an interest in wound care and became a Tissue Viability Nurse in 2000.

In 2003, Nikki became the clinical team leader for the Tissue Viability Service and has been actively developing the research portfolio within the service since completing her MSc in Evidence based Practice at York University. Nikki is the chair of the regional Tissue Viability group for Yorkshire and Humber. The service has recently received national recognition by being short listed for an HSJ Efficiency award.

Trustee Profiles

Gill SykesTrustee since 2009

Gill has 25 years of experience as a specialist podiatrist, working to develop close links with the multidisciplinary team Ion Wound Management. Her main role is with vascular and critically high-risk patients, taking part in joint clinics where she works alongside with a vascular consultant with a particular interest in tissue viability, an orthotist and an amputee team. Gill also undertakes the measurement and fitting of prescription orthopaedic footwear in order to address the long-term prevention of re-ulceration. Much of her work is in co-ordinating care for patients with foot wounds, working closely with district nursing teams in order to provide a seamless journey for the patient between secondary and primary care.
