RURAL POSTINGSA critical discourse

Group 5

Page 4: Bioethics gp5 (3)

The Need for Rural postings

• 60% of health workers work in urban areas

• Majority of Indian population – rural areas• Simple ailments progressing to

complications• Number of preventable deaths rising

Page 5: Bioethics gp5 (3)

More doctors in urban setups…

…more people in

rural areas…

Page 6: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Doctor-population ratio?

Page 7: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Communicable diseases are rising…

Page 8: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Why students wouldn’t agree

• Students not exposed to the rural medical setup and problems face by the people

• Lack of basic and emergency facilities• Dearth of infrastructure• Low salary & less security• Language barrier/difficulty in

communicating• Better opportunities in urban areas

Belief in Manipal: is serving in rural areas the duty of every doctor?

Page 12: Bioethics gp5 (3)

What’s wrong about the compulsion?

• Will make young doctors feel shackled• May demotivate them• Lesser family contact time may lead to

increase in the rate of physician burnout

Page 13: Bioethics gp5 (3)
Page 14: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Belief in Manipal: Is refusing to do the duty the right of every doctor?

Page 15: Bioethics gp5 (3)

…a bit more of perspective…

Page 16: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Belief in Manipal: Is compulsory posting the solution?

Page 17: Bioethics gp5 (3)

How should the problem be tackled?

• Proper infrastructure • Increase in pay scale• Reservation for further studies• Sense of humanitarism

Does that sound motivating?

Page 18: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Belief in Manipal: Will exposure to

rural setting during UG help improve

attitudes of medical students towards

practicing in rural setups?

Page 19: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Belief in Manipal: Would you provide medical services in rural areas in the future?

Page 20: Bioethics gp5 (3)

Belief in Manipal: Would you consider working

in a rural area if a PG seat is guaranteed at

the end of tenure?

Page 21: Bioethics gp5 (3)

We suggest…

• Orientation to rural setup during undergraduation

• Incentives like increase in pay, job security, opportunities for higher education

• Involvement of other people from other

fields
