PHILIPPINE BIODIVERSITY
The Philippines is considered to be one of the world’s most biologically rich countries. It is one of the world’s 17 mega-diversity countries, which together host more than 70 % of the world’s species
The Philippines has among the highest rates of species discovery in the world. Sixteen new species of mammals have been discovered in the last 10 years alone
Current taxonomic estimates show that the Philippines has the highest level of endemism in the Indo-Malayan Realm on a per unit-area basis and the highest concentration of biodiversity on earth.

THREATS TO PHILIPPINE BIODIVERSITY
Biodiversity is threatened. Some of the main causes are the current rate of species extinction, habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, climate change, pollution, and overutilization of natural resources
In the country, fragmentation of natural forests is the major threat to our globally significant biodiversity resources. Fragmentation is seen in the continued loss of forest cover at the rate of 2.1 percent in the 2000 to 2005 period.

National systems and policies are in place to support LGU-level biodiversity conservation efforts
LGU LEVEL
LGUs encompassing 1.6 million hectares have the tools and capacities to integrate sustainable management into decentralized government structures
Landscape- level biodiversity conservation and sustainable development practices are applied at 8 pilot sites
• National convergence initiative• SME development plan
• Trans-boundary agreements• Harmonized CLUP and FLUP• Disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation• Co-management agreement• Geographic information systems
• Advocacy campaigns• Tenurial instruments• Measurement, reporting and verification system.

• Manage risk through insurance and resilient infrastructure
• Trans-boundary mapping and validation is critical in sustaining the interest of lowland farmers to engage in economic activities
• Upland farming in forestland is characterized by low yield and minimal returns. A public-private partnership approach could help to overcome these bottlenecks.
![Page 28: BIODIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS PROJECT August 27, 2014 Leoncio T. Cubillas, Jr. UP ISSI dongcubillas1](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022062320/56649cf85503460f949c98a0/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)

• BPP is a multi-year project. Project sustainability is very much dependent on the patronage of the current Local Chief Executive
• Mapping value chains facilitate the identification of economic opportunities within and around the political jurisdiction of LGUs.

• Environmental sustainability, social equity, and democratic governance are the key elements towards economic growth of the local governments in pilot areas
• Be ready to provide viable alternatives before you can draw communities away from practices that are destructive to the environment
• The Biodiversity Partnerships Project should shift its focus from intent into action.
