BioDisc®

Improving environmental standards, more stringent controls, new Europeanguidelines and the introduction of newBuilding Regulations have placed greaterresponsibility on specifiers and users toensure they select the correct treatmentsystem for their application.

Klargester BioDisc® treatment plants havebeen designed to provide an engineeredpackage solution to meet a wide rangeof applications and discharge qualities.

ASSURED PERFORMANCEKlargester’s unique patented ManagedFlow System has been specificallydesigned to maintain optimumperformance despite shock organicloadings and hydraulic surges. The detrimental effects of moderndisinfectants and cleaning materials areminimised by the managed flow system.

COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONSCertain commercial applications, such aspubs, clubs, hotels and industrial units, place additional stresses on thewastewater treatment process.

The sewage strength from the cocktail ofdetergents, cleaners, and chemicalsdemands a greater treatment capacitythan a purely residential application. In such instances Klargester can advise onthe best possible treatment and BioDisc®

can meet your requirements efficiently andcost-effectively.

PROCESS DESIGNBioDisc® uniquely provides four separatetreatment zones within a single vessel.

Primary Settlement Section :Wastewater enters the primary chamber.Solids and heavy particles, includingnon-biodegradable items, settle andconsolidate into a sludge which requiresperiodic removal. Liquid still containingsome solid particles rises upwards into the

Primary Biozone : Discs in this area, rotating at approximately two revolutionsper minute, allow oxygen to be absorbedinto the developing biofilm as naturallyoccurring bacteria attach to the discs. These discs provide a highly beneficialpre-treatment area.

Flow Management Device : Forwardflow is controlled by a baling deviceattached to the rotor assembly and apre-determined volume of partially treatedwaste is transferred into the secondarydisc zone. Incoming flows in excess of thebaling device capacity stay in the primaryarea and it is this that creates hydraulicbalancing within the plant. Zones 1 and 2(as above) between them have a balancingcapacity equal to approximately 25% ofthe design flow of the plant and it is thisfeature that can allow the plant to retain sixhours flow in the event of a power failure. This is now a requirement under thelatest Building Regulations Part H2.

Secondary Disc Zone : Flowsentering this zone are exposed to asecond and separate bank of discs onwhich grow a further matrix of bacteria.Protected from flow variation and harmfulcontaminants, the bacteria efficiently usethe nutrients in the effluent as a foodsource.

The rotation of the discs creates a gentleflow path within both disc zones thatmoves wastewater along the zone androtation also sloughs ageing or surplusbacteria from the discs creating space fornew bacteria to develop.

A key benefit of BioDisc® is that the wholesurface area is continually regeneratedwith new biological growth and that thereis constant replenishment as all spentbacteria are flushed into the finalsettlement zone.

It is often the case with submerged orfixed media treatment processes, that thebiological zones become clogged withdead or excessive biological growth, inhibiting treatment and demandingexpensive and dirty maintenance.

The Klargester BioDisc® utilises proven rotating biologicalcontactor (RBC) technology, and this range of largerBioDisc® treatment plants enables Klargester to offersolutions against a much wider range of applications.

All Klargester treatment plants are delivered direct to siteand ready to install. The process is self-establishing,and does not require the addition of cultures orchemicals.

Final Settlement Zone : The almostfully treated effluent, is displaced from thedisc area into the final settlement zone. The final settlement zone is fitted with asimple sludge return pump that transfersthe settled material from the base of thiszone into the primary settlement zone. This improves process performance byprotecting the outlet and returning diluteand active biomass into the primary tank. This feature can be modified for seasonalflow variations.

The final effluent, free from solids andpollutants, exists through the outlet pipe.

Consistent Effluent QualityThese plant are designed to achieve aneffluent quality of 20mg/l BOD, 30mg/lSuspended Solids and 20mg/l Ammoniaon a 95% basis. These BioDisc® can alsobe configured to produce better standardsof effluent quality with Ammonia levels aslow as 5mg/l being achievable. ContactKlargester for design support and furtherinformation.

The systems are designed todeal with flows up to 3xDWF.

Applications where commercial cateringtakes place will generate significantvolumes of grease which should not beallowed to enter any treatment system.

Klargester manufacture a wide range ofgrease traps and their specialist adviceshould be sought in these types ofapplications.

The treatment of sewage fromapplications other than domestichousing can often demand specialprecautions, therefore specialist adviceshould be sought from Klargester.

EFFLUENT PUMPSETSA septic tank or treatment systempumpset can be used to disperse settledeffluent when a site has a high water tableor adverse invert levels. Installed after thetreatment system and pumping settledeffluent up to an inspection chamber, flow to the drainage system then takesplace by gravity in the normal way.

SAMPLE CHAMBERSWhen a treatment plant discharges, it is aregulatory requirement to have a samplingpoint so that the effluent quality can beperiodically checked by regulatory bodies.

Available to suit all outlet depths of ourstandard ranges, a Klargester samplechamber provides the solution, enablingboth quick installation and easy access foraccurate and convenient effluent testing.

SAFETY FEATURES Low profile lockable covers

Fully removable covers to easemaintenance, simplify de-sludging andprovide a safe working environmentwithout the need for restricted accessprovision, a requirement of the ConfinedSpaces Regulations 1997

Full platform access to motor andbearings

designed to run from either a singlephase or 3 phase power source

require 60 to 370 watt motors, offeringthe lowest running costs of any plant intheir class

DIRECT DRIVEThe disc assembly rotates through thesewage effluent and supports the growthof a biological matrix. When fully loadedwith saturated bacteria the disc assemblybecomes heavy, therefore both drive androtor design are critical. Klargester havemany years experience in this field andthese new products provide a number ofnew features:

direct drive motor which is fixed directlyto the disc shaft*
