Local EventSki / Snowboard at Greek Peak Mountain

Ski and Snowboard Club 2017 is underway! We scheduled four January andtwo February trips. This year we are at Greek Peak Friday nights 5-10 p.m.

Student club members benefit through:rates for lift ticket, bus & rentals.

Chaperones /advisors to and from the mountain.

Ski and Snowboard Club is open to all BCSD students grade 6-12. Parents arewelcome, space available. They purchase passes and pay bus fees as well.

If you are considering having your son or daughter join us next year, sign ups begin in October and run through December. Also next year, we are considering Saturday trips.

Hope to see you in January 2018!

District NewsBen Franklin celebrates 100 days of schoolOn February 16, the first and second grade classes at Ben Franklin celebrated their 100th day of school. First-graders dressed like they were 100 years old and second-graders wore shirts decorated with 100 items. They had a fashion show at the end of the day after doing several activities.

Eastside Band concertOn March 2, the Eastside Band performed a concert directed by Rob Johnson, Beth Shanfelt and Andrew Garrett. The band featured students from East Middle, Coolidge, Franklin, MacArthur and Roosevelt. It was a great show!

Recently, former West Middle School student Erik Wagner was the school student resource officer (SRO) for the day and got to see some of his former teachers while working at WMS.

Baiyina Richardson for her visual arts entry “The Girl in the Hijab” Daveline Kenya Bruce for her literature entry “Freedom Love”

Jake Carns for his film production entry “Life”

All artists who participated in the regional judging received a certificate, a ribbon and a gift card for the Oakdale Mall. The art was displayed at the Oakdale Mall. A reception followed. NYS winners will be announced in early spring. They then advance to National PTA level.

District NewsBinghamton Senators visit MacArthur studentsMacArthur fifth-grade students recently had a visit with Chad Nehring (#16) and Matt O’Connor (#29) of the Binghamton Senators for the Reading is SENSational event in honor of Read Across America Day. The players talked about the importance of reading and read two books to the students. Players then answerd questions that the students had prepared and signed autographs. Each student also received a free ticket to a Sunday game.

BHS students Sophia Klin and Ethan Wetzel were selected to perform for the NYS Band Directors Association Honors Band at the NYSBDA Annual Symposium in Syracuse on March 3, 4 and 5. Students from across the state were selected based on their NYSSMA scores.BHS students Audrey King, Ashlyn Taylor, Ella Egan Elise Stetson, Natalie Sheehan, and Shayne Soltis performed in the grade 10-12 Concert Band for the Broome County Music Educators Assoc. (BCMEA) Festival I at Binghamton University on March 3 and 4. Students were selected based on an audition in January.

District NewsBHS band students selected to performOn March 6, the Binghamton High School music department participated in Music in our Schools Month with a combined performance at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City. The following musical ensembles performed:

• Orchestra, under the direction of Elizabeth Bartlett

• Crescendos, Davidge Choir and Concert Choir, under the direction of Jennifer Easley

• Steel Band, under the direction of Joel Smales

Congratulations to the following BHS singers on their acceptance into the 7-9 and 10-12 BCMEA All-County Chorus: 7-9 All County Chorus: Baritone: Anthony Capozzi, AJ Massey, Josh Schull, and Trevor Terry; Soprano: Emmanuella Magot, Megan McNamara, Paige McNett, Charity Weidow (missing from photo), Angelique Williams.

10-12 All County Chorus: Soprano: Fedeline Jean-Philippe Alto: Sophia Klin, Jeannie Sebesta, Natalie Sheehan Bass: Matthew Kovach (missing from photo), Phil Steele.

The 7-9 BCMEA All County Chorus performed at the SUNY Binghamton Anderson Center on March 4. The 10-12 BCMEA All County Chorus will perform at the SUNY Binghamton Anderson Center on March 18.
