■ Indications used in this manualVarious indications are used in this manual and on the machine itself to ensure safe proper use. Those indications and their meanings are given below.

WARNING Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,could result in death or serious injury.

ATT.Identifies operations or acts that may disable the equipment and require servicing as well as operations or acts required to restore normal operations, such as resetting.

WARNING ● Do not insert fi ngers, pens, wires and other objects into the equipment. This can result in injury, electric shock, fi re and/or damage. ● Draw power to the equipment directly from an electrical outlet. Do not share or piggyback the source outlet. This can result in fi re. ● Do not tamper with the power cord. This can result in fi re and/or electric shock. ● Do not place heavy objects on the power cord. This can damage the cord, resulting in fi re and/or electric shock. ● Do not bundle the power cord during use. This can result in fi re and/or damage from overheating. Unbundle the cord before use. ● Do not plug the power cord in or out with wet hands. This can result in electric shock. ● Do not operate the equipment with wet hands or when wearing wet clothing. This can result in electric shock. ● Do not cover, drape or otherwise leave the equipment underneath paper or cloth while it is plugged into an electrical outlet. This can result in fi re and/or damage. ● Hold the power cord by the plug, and not the cord itself, when unplugging from the electrical outlet. Tugging on the cord can damage it, resulting in fi re and/or electric shock. ● Do not insert or allow the grounding wire of the power cord to contact the electrical outlet. This can result in fi re and/or electric shock.

● Keep water, chemicals and other liquids away from the equipment. If liquids penetrate the equipment, immediately unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and contact the place of purchase for servicing. Using the equipment while wet on the inside can result in damage, fi re and/or electric shock. ● Do not use the equipment when in anything but proper working condition. Using the equipment while emitting smoke, strange noises or odors can result in fi re and/or electric shock. Immediately unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and contact the place of purchase for servicing. ● Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet before cleaning the equipment. Unexpected equipment operation can result in injury.

● Do not disassemble or remodel the equipment. This can result in damage, fi re and/or electric shock.

● Use the power cord that was included in the product package. Use of other cords can result in damage, fi re and/or electric shock. ● Ground the equipment without fail. Unless grounded, fi re and/or electric shock can occur in the event of a current leak. ● Periodically clean the power cord plug. Dust buildup over time can result in fi re and/or damage.

CAUTION ● Install the equipment so that it sits level. Do not install it on shaky tables, inclined surfaces or anywhere it would be unstable. Toppling over or falling can result in injury and/or damage. ● Do not share the electrical outlet with equipment that requires high capacity supply (air conditioners/heaters, refrigerators, microwave ovens, offi ce equipment, etc.). Voltage drops can cause the equipment to malfunction. ● Do not use the equipment where directly exposed to sunlight, high temperatures and humidity, or condensation. This can destabilize operation and result in damage. ● Do not touch drive parts such as rollers with power to the equipment ON. This can result in injury. ● Keep hair, neckties, necklaces and other loose garments away from drive parts such as rollers. Injury can result if entangled. ● Do not cover, drape or otherwise leave the equipment underneath paper or cloth. This can result in fi re and/or damage. ● Use only genuine consumables. ● Use only specifi ed types of paper. Unspecifi ed types of paper can damage the equipment.

● Do not insert fi ngers into the document eject port. This can result in injury. ● Do not insert hands into the equipment outside the zone for replacing consumables or clearing paper jams. This can result in injury and/or burns.

● Periodically clean the power cord plug. Dust buildup over time can result in fi re and/or damage. ● Immediately wash off any grease that adheres to fi ngers or clothing when replacing consumables, with soap and water. ● Connect the equipment to an easily accessible electrical outlet near to the equipment. ● Be careful not to pinch hands when opening/closing doors and covers.

● For safety’s sake, unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet before holidays and other long periods of disuse.

Requests to users

Observe the following to prevent equipment trouble and unexpected breakdowns.

(1) Do not shut OFF the power or unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet while the equipment is running.

(2) Do not use or store the equipment in the following places as it can result in trouble.1 Where directly exposed to sunlight or sources of heat such as heaters.2 Dusty or humid places.3 Inclined surfaces or where subjected to vibrations or shocks.4 Do not use the equipment in places where the temperature is 10˚C or below, or 32˚C or

above.5 Do not store the equipment in places where the temperature is -10˚C or below, or 60˚C or

above.6 Do not use the equipment near to high voltage sources or equipment that generates

strong magnetic fields.(3) Wipe dirt off the equipment with a dry soft piece of cloth. Do not use thinner, benzene, alcohol

or other organic solvents or chemicals. Substances of the sort can deform and discolor the equipment.

(4) Do not spill coffee, juice or other beverages or water from flower pots or vases on the equipment.

(5) The Binding Finisher is a precision machine. Do not allow it to topple over, or subject it to strong impacts or shocks.

(6) Keep dirt and foreign matter from penetrating inside the equipment. This can result in breakdown.

(7) Use only genuine consumables.(8) Entrust the services of a specialized service engineer to install and relocate the equipment.

Improper handling can result in injury, electric shock, fire and/or damage.

Handling of internal partsThe following precautions regard internal parts.

WARNING• Do not remove covers or screws unless specifically instructed to do so in this

manual. The equipment contains high voltage parts and contact with them can result in electric shock. Entrust internal inspections, adjustments and servicing to the place of purchase.

• Do not remodel the equipment. This can result in fire and/or electric shock.

CAUTION

• Dust buildup inside the equipment or use over extended periods of time without cleaning can result in fire and/or damage.

• Do not operate the equipment with hands inside the equipment or underneath the stacker tray. Fingers can be pinched in gaps in the equipment, resulting in injury.

Handling of consumablesThe following precautions regard consumables.

CAUTION

• Do not use stapled or conductive paper such as paper that contains silver or carbon. This can result in fire.

• Be careful not to pinch or otherwise injure fingers when closing rings with the ring opener.

1 Power switchThis is the power ON/OFF switch of the equipment. Power is automatically shut OFF at the switch when the power OFF time is set.

2. PREPARATIONS FOR USING THE BINDING FINISHER

PaperThis section explains the types of and sizes of paper applicable with the Binding Finisher, as well as those which are not.

■ Applicable types and sizes of paperThe types and sizes of paper stock that can be used with the Binding Finisher are as follows.

Turning the power ON

1 Open the left door and turn the power ON from the power switch located there inside.

2 When the power to the equipment is ON, the DOOR on the operation panel is lit a red color and “Door Open” appears on the LCD.

3 Close the left door. The DOOR on the operation panel goes out.

4 ”Starting” appears on the LCD. Wait a few seconds while the equipment initializes.

NOTE• The ring cartridge takes both rings for 50 sheets and rings for 100 sheets, but do not load both

sizes in the ring cartridge at the same time.• It is recommended to prepare separate cartridges for each ring size (for 50 sheets, for 100

sheets) and color.• Store rings upright in their boxes.

Loading ringsThis section explains how to load rings the very first time, but rings are replenished in the same way.

I M PUse only the specified type of rings. Other types of rings may not bind pages correctly and can clog the mechanism, resulting in equipment trouble.

• Open the right door of the Binding Finisher.

• Pull the cartridge cover downward to open.

• Open the bottom tab of the package to the front.

• Pull the opened tab downward.

• Pull the ring cartridge out.

• Cut the package tab off.

• Prepare new rings.• Align the grooves on the

package with the ring guides on the cartridge.

• Pull the package upward.• Return the ring cartridge

to its original position.• Close the cartridge cover.• Close the Binding Finisher

3. PUNCHING HOLES IN PAPER AND BINDING WITH RINGS

Binding with ringsThis section explains how to punch holes in paper and bind the sheets with the rings.

I M P• The Binding Finisher cannot punch holes in or bind with rings paper that is thicker than 216 g/m2.• Holes can be punched and sheets bound with rings only along the long side of A4 and LT paper.• Bound documents are stacked in the tray with the ringed binding positioned to open to the left

and downward when paper feeding on the printer connected to the Binding Finisher is set to forward and downward.

T I P• Documents are bound to a max. thickness of 5.5 mm when using rings for 50 sheets and a

max. thickness of 11 mm with the rings for 100 sheets. Binding beyond these thicknesses stops in progress, leaving the remaining paper in the equipment. In such case, remove the paper still inside the equipment.

• The documents bound with the rings are ejected into the stacker tray. The stacker tray can hold up to 16 documents when bound with the rings for 50 sheets and up to 11 documents when using the rings for 100 sheets.

T I P• Paper with the punched holes is ejected to the stacker tray. The stacker tray can hold a max. 50

sheets of plain paper.

■ To change LCD contrast• Press the RIGHT button on a mode indication screen.• Select “Contrast?” with the UP/DOWN buttons, and press the SET button.

• Set the contrast with the UP/DOWN buttons. (The higher the number, the darker the LCD.)• Enter the setting with the SET button.• Return to the initial screen with the ESC button.

■ To change the brightness of the backlight• Press the RIGHT button on a mode indication screen.• Select “Brightness?” with the UP/DOWN buttons, and press the SET button.

• Set the brightness with the UP/DOWN buttons. (The higher the number, the brighter the backlight.)

• Enter the setting with the SET button.• Return to the initial screen with the ESC button.

■ To change the power OFF time• Press the RIGHT button on a mode indication screen.• Select “Poweroff Time?” with the UP/DOWN buttons, and press the SET button.

• Set the power OFF time with the UP/DOWN buttons.• Enter the setting with the SET button.• Return to the initial screen with the ESC button.

T I P• The power OFF time can be selected from OFF, 30, 60, 90 or 120 min. The power switch shuts

OFF automatically after the set time elapses if the Binding Finisher is not operated for that time.• Power to the Binding Finisher stays ON all the time when the Poweroff Time is set to “OFF.”

If paper jamsThis section explains how to clear paper jams.

■ Locating paper jamsIf paper jams inside the equipment, “Paper Jam: ***, Sheet Remain” appears on the LCD and the location of the jam is indicated by an LED. Therefore, remove the jammed paper as required for the indicated location.* *** is the jam code.

Removing jammed paper

This section explains how to remove jammed paper.

Do not operate the equipment with hands inside the equipment or underneath the stacker tray.Fingers can be pinched in gaps in the equipment, resulting in injury.

I M P• Do not shut OFF the power to remove jammed paper.• Pull paper carefully so that it does not tear, until removed. Shredded paper that remains inside

the equipment can jam again and cause other trouble.

• Lift the two P1 levers and remove the paper.

• Return the P1 levers back to their original positions.

• Close the doors.


• Lift the two P2 levers and remove the paper.

• Return the P2 levers back to their original positions.

• Close the doors.

■ If LED 3 lights up (Paper Jam: 004, 101)


• Lower the P3 lever and remove the paper.• Return the P3 lever back to its original

position. • Close the doors.

• Open the ring cartridge downward.

• Pull out the ring cartridge.

• Remove the rings clogged in the Binding Finisher.

• To remove rings clogged at the bottom of the ring cartridge,1 Press and hold the blue button on the bottom of the ring

cartridge, and;2 Pull out the clogged rings.

• Set the ring cartridge back in place and close the cartridge cover.• Close the right door of the Binding Finisher.

• Lift the ring cartridge and remove from the equipment.

T I P• When removing clogged rings from the ring cartridge, other rings inside the cartridge may slip

out of place or get stuck at an angle. Therefore, check that the rings are properly set in the cartridge before returning the cartridge back into place.

The below table lists major messages and the actions for correcting them.

Changing the type of ringThis section explains how to change the type of ring.

1. Remove the ring cartridge from the equipment.

2. Push the rings upward from the bottom of the ring cartridge.

3. Fit your hand between the ring cartridge and rings, and lift the rings up and out.

4. Load the desired rings into the ring cartridge.

5. Return the ring cartridge to its place inside the equipment.

T I P• Lay removed rings on a flat surface so that they do not break apart.

NOTE• Do not reuse used rings.• Be careful not to deform the rings by removing and reloading them into the cartridge. Deformed

rings cause jams and trouble.

Adding pages to bound documentsThis section explains how to add pages to bound documents.Pages are increased in ring-bound documents using the ring opener.The ring opener makes it easy to add necessary pages at a later date or retrofit the document with a cover. It is also possible to change just specific pages.

CAUTION

• Be careful not to pinch fingers or injure yourself when closing rings with the ring opener.

2. With the document closed, align the rings with the grooves on the rebinding board.

3. Fit the back of the rings into the grooves. Carefully press on the rings from above to immobilize them in the rebinding board.

4. Open the document to the page where wanting to add more pages.

5. Carefully press down on the rebinding board and paper, insert the tip of the ring opener into the space between the document and rings, and slide the opener from the front to the rear. The rings will pop open.

7. Draw the opened rings back together a few at a time, while pressing from above.To close rings for 50 sheets, use the top half (smaller depressions) of the ring opener. To close rings for 100 sheets, use the bottom half (larger depressions) of the ring opener. The rings will close.

8. Pull the back of the rings from the anchoring grooves.

NOTE• Do not face the tip of the ring opener towards others when working.

Power supply

The following precautions regard the power supply of the Binding Finisher.

WARNING

• Plug the power cord directly and firmly into an electrical outlet.• Use only power supplies of the indicated voltage and frequency. Also, do not

share or piggyback the source outlet. This can result in fire and/or electric shock.• Do not use extension cords.• Do not damage, bundle or remodel the power cord. Also, setting heavy objects on

top of the cord, and pulling and bending the cord unreasonably can damage the cord, resulting in fire and/or electric shock.

• Contact between the power plug blades and metal can result in fire and/or electric shock.

• Do not plug the power cord in or out with wet hands. This can result in electric shock.

• Locate the equipment as close as possible to an electrical outlet that makes it easy to unplug the power cord in the event of trouble.

• If the power cord is damaged or internal wires are exposed or broken, contact the place of purchase for a replacement. Using a damaged power cord can result in fire and/or electric shock.

CAUTION

• Hold the power cord by the plug, and not the cord itself, when unplugging from the electrical outlet. Tugging on the cord can damage it, resulting in fire and/or electric shock.

• For safety’s sake, unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet before holidays and other long periods of disuse.

Cleaning the Binding Finisher

I M P• Do not clean the equipment with chemicals such as cleaners, or organic solvents such as

thinner and benzene. Substances of the sort can infiltrate through gaps in the equipment, and dissolve plastic parts and cause other damage.

• Entrust internal cleaning to a service engineer.

◆ How to clean the outer shellWipe with a dry soft piece of cloth. For stubborn dirt, moisten the cloth with water, wring well and wipe again. If dirt cannot be removed with water, wipe with a neutral detergent, then wipe with water and then wipe dry.

■ Cleaning the power plugThis section explains how to clean the power plug.

CAUTION

• Once or more times a year, unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and clean the blades and surrounding area. Dust buildup can result in fire.

I M P• Set the power switch of the equipment in the "OFF" position before unplugging the power cord.• Ground the equipment without fail after cleaning the power plug.

Leakage breakerThis section explains how to test the leakage breaker.The leakage breaker of the Binding Finisher has the below engraved markings.

Power ONPower OFF

The Binding Finisher has a leakage breaker to protect against electric shock.The leakage breaker is normally left in the ON ( ) position. Test breaker tripping as follows about once a year.

WARNING

• When the leakage breaker is in the OFF position, do not set it to the ON position. This can cause electric shock, fire, smoke or an event that trips the breaker.

I M PContact the place of purchase if the leakage breaker does not work properly when tested.

1. Set the main leakage breaker of the line in the OFF position.

2. Press the test button of the leakage breaker with a pen, etc.

3. Check that the breaker switch trips to the OFF position.
