Hello All,
I hope those who took advantage of our all-day general workshop were happy with their results. There was some good material being worked on. Next meeting we have Tony S talking about bonsai photography as well as a products presentation from Neutrog. This should be an informative afternoon. The Melbourne AABC is on shortly and I look forward to attending. Each year they ask clubs to donate a prize for the fund-raising raffles. Vice President Michael C donated his time and resources in making a beautiful bonsai stand out of reclaimed hoop pine for Bimer to donate as a raffle prize. Thank you, Michael, for your fine work and generosity. I will be putting a few raffle tickets in for this one personally. Our Bimer Market day is coming up on June 22. All vendor tables are booked out so it should be a great afternoon to pick up a bargain or two. Apologies to the Redlands Bonsai club since this falls on their meeting day. The hall is very popular and no Sunday spots were available. The date also lands on my daughter’s birthday so I will have to do some juggling with my time on this day. The weather is cooling down nicely at the moment. Trees will stay wetter so check them before watering. Colour in deciduous trees can be encouraged by moving your tree to a sunnier spot. JUNE CALENDAR TREE – SHIMPAKU

Acquired in 2008 as a bonsai stock from Bonsai Environment as part of the Canberra Bonsai Society club bus trip to
Sydney. The tree was roughly 1 meter in height and was initially reduced to 40 cm and potted into a colander pot. It
was then further reduced down to the newest growth at the lowest point of the tree, which was grown to form the
tree that it is now.
Initially styled in the summer of 2009/10, the tree was potted into a Pat Kennedy pot in spring 2010. The tree was
accepted as a loan tree to the National Arboretum in 2013 and was cared for by the staff and volunteers for a
few years and was returned to the owner in 2017. The tree is about 10 years old today as a bonsai. Mario L.
WHY – HOW – TO GROUND LAYER - Ray Mackaway - [email protected] - Part 1 of 2
WHY There are several reason to ground layer: - Ugly root system - Ground level to first branch is too high - Layering a low branch on a tree My intention is to cover the first two reasons. The third reason has been used for many years to propagate a tree from a low branch of a tree. UGLY ROOT SYSTEM If you have a tree with an ugly root system, ground layering can be used to create a new root system that can be trained the way you desire. GROUND LEVEL TO FIRST BRANCH TOO HIGH If you have a tree where the first branch is a little to high in relation to the ground, ground layering can be used to reduce the height of the tree.

If you had a tree where the first branch is quite high in relation to the ground, an air layer could be used to solve the problem. I am referring to the situation when the roots need to be created at a level that would be too difficult to apply an air layer. HOW The roots system of this tree is quite ugly. Let's have a look at the process to change this to a much more acceptable root system. Ring bark the tree. The distance between the two cuts should be about 1.5 times the diameter of the trunk. Note the angle of the top cut. When doing the top cut, cut it at an angle that will produce a root system suitable for the angle the trunk will eventually come from the ground level. In this example you can see that the trunk is at an angle, thus the top cut is parallel to the ground.
Apply hormone to the top cut. I use two hormones mixed together. If you can’t find the Richgro hormone, replace with Yates Plant Cutting Powder.
Mix the two hormones together. Use a 50/50 ratio. Note: If you can't find the Richgro, use Yates Plant Cutting Powder. This comes in a paper sachet, so place the powder into a glass or plastic jar. The reason for doing this is so the hormone can be stored in the refrigerator. To keep hormone in good condition it should be stored in a refrigerator when not being used. Note: Never dip cuttings into the hormone bottle or sachet. Always put the hormone into a receptacle for use, as shown below.

After applying the hormone to the top cut, wrap a piece of wire around the trunk and bind it tightly. Push the wire up against the bottom of the top cut. Then paint some more hormone around the wire and top cut. Place a mound of muck and sphagnum moss around the
truck making sure that the mound is well above the top
cut.
How to make the mix
The muck is made from ground clay and cow manure. Mix the two at a 50/50 ratio. Make sure the cow manure is mature. If it is too fresh it could burn the new roots. Place some sphagnum moss in a bucket of Seasol for at least a half hour. Cut the sphagnum up finely.
Mix the two together.
Place a pot around the mound of muck and sphagnum. Fill the pot with a good bonsai mix. Make sure to press the mix in well. This will force the muck and sphagnum hard up against the trunk.

BIMER BONSAI CLUB
Skills & Knowledge Course Bimer Bonsai Club is planning a course for members which will
commence in July 2019. The course will run for a year and go
through the 12-month calendar of activities that help to
develop great bonsai in South East Queensland. Targeted at
beginners to intermediate with reference notes and practical
application to trees it is open to any club member. The course
will be run by several committee and experienced club
members.
It will be held on the first Saturday of every month at our
Wavell Heights facility (Wavell Heights Community Hall, 76
Cressey Street, off Edinburgh Castle Road, Wavell Heights,
Brisbane Queensland) from 9.00am to 12.00pm.
The cost will be only $150 for the 12 months and will include 3/three trees to learn from.
The course will cover:
Inspiring videos and reference information
How to keep your Bonsai alive.
Techniques for developing Bonsai
A feature species each month
History, Styles and sizes
Tools, wiring, care and maintenance
Plant selection and acquisition
What to do each month with your trees.
We are seeking expressions of interest from Club Members to better design the course and understand possible

PETER WARREN WORKSHOPS
Peter Warren is coming to Brisbane for Bimer over 3 days in November. From the 1st to the 3rd, there will be multiple activities with a focus on intensive workshops. We are seeking expressions of interest from members to participate in full day workshops on Friday 1st (Bimer members only). There will also be ½ day workshops available on Sunday. Please see Averil or Keith to register your interest.

Please remember to bring along a tree, a NATIVE or any tree for display this month. You may need some feedback or
assistance with developing it into a bonsai. Any tree is welcome. Members are encouraged to share their
accumulated knowledge with the newer members. There’s also the chance to win an additional lucky door prize for
any member who brings in a tree for display.
