Aboriginal art Our students had a wonderful opportunity to work with Tyronne, a Wongkumarra artist. They produced a vibrant dot painting representing the geographical landscape surrounding our school. It reminded me of a story I was once told about the significance of different locations in our community. The school was described as the place of learning. When you view the painting, you will see that the school has been placed at the centre, surrounded by our local towns. The students have also added their handprints linking ancient traditions to our commitment to personalise education for students. Get involved P&C AGM I encourage any interested parents to join us for the P&C Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday March 26 at 7.00pm (please meet in the Front Office foyer). An active P&C is an invaluable resource to a school and its students. Principal Network I attended our local Principal Network meeting in Tumbarumba last week. The time was Page 1 invaluable to explore current issues around teaching literacy and numeracy, pursuing achievement in rural areas, future focused learning and the impact of cognitive load theory on the way we teach. It was a great opportunity to share our practices across our schools. Visitors to our school This week we are fortunate to have students from Japan visiting our school. Thank you to Ms Fischer for coordinating this. We also have the prestigious Bangarra Dance Company visiting on Tuesday. Thank you to Mrs Preston who has brought Bangarra to our school. We will be using this opportunity for each group to view and exchange cultural dances. This is one of the many ways we encourage students to explore diversity in their learning. come prepared to school each day with their books, student planner and writing equipment. Please encourage your children to be prepared for school, with equipment ready, as well as homework and assignments completed on time. These are important life skills that will help all students in their future learning pathways, careers and home lives. Mrs Ruth Winfield Relieving Principal Basketball ReportLast week our newly formed basketball squad travelled to Albury to play in the local competition of the first round of the CHS Knockout. Our first game against Murray High School saw the girls compete with the intensity we would expect from a team of such capable athletes. The Billabong girls challenged the Murray team who had several highly skilled basketball players, unfortunately we were unsuccessful but our girls made the other team work hard for the win. Our second game against Deniliquin High School was evenly matched. All of the girls represented our school to the best of their ability and should be proud of their efforts. The team included: April Kennedy, Shayla Disley, Shalayla Wheeler, Georgia way, Tayla Bodycott, Millie Walsh,

Tia Charles, Tarnee Wilson and Lucy way who unfortunately was unwell and could not play on the day. Thank you also to our helpers: Flynt Trimble, Benjamin Medley and Charlie Doig who were score keepers and umpires.Ms Bowen P & C NewsThe Billabong High School AGM will take place on Tuesday, 26 March commencing at 7pm, and will be followed by a General Meeting. All parents and citizens are invited to attend. MathspaceAll students in Years 7 – 11 have access to Mathspace, which is an online Maths Program that incorporates tutorials, a textbook, interactive questions and feedback. This is available for student use at school and at home. Some classes may be set tasks to complete on Mathspace as a homework exercise. The cost to register for Mathspace as an individual is quite significant ($100). Billabong High has registered and paid as a school which has allowed student cost to be kept to a low price of $15 for the year. This amount has been invoiced as a part of school

Duke of EdinburghIt is wonderful to see 15 Year 9 students register for the Duke of Ed. Program. These students, along with seven Year 10 students doing their Silver level, will be undertaking a training and preparation walk on Wednesday morning the 3rd of April. This will assist students to be ready for their first adventurous journey camp, held in May. Meetings will take place over the next few weeks to support students and distribute notes. Davidson Shield Cricket Report Billabong V Wagga HighAfter losing the toss and being asked to bowl, the boys got off to a perfect start. Wagga High were under the pump early after losing 2 quick wickets for just 4 runs. Rory Jenkins took 2 wickets for just 6 runs off his 5 over spell and Jake Thomas had a superb 4 overs going for just 3 runs which put us in a very good position. With wicket after wicket from our tight bowling

by Ewan Mackinlay, Brenten Keogh, Jack Driscoll and Nicholas Newton we bowled Wagga out for just 61 in the 34th over. The pick of the bowlers being Ewan Mackinlay taking 4 wickets for 10 runs off 8 overs straight. Other wicket takers were; Rory Jenkins 2 wickets and Jake Thomas 1 wicket. After a good bowling and fielding performance it was our turn to bat and we needed 62 runs to win off 40 overs. After losing 3 key wickets for just 13 runs, things were not looking very good for us. Then, a key partnership from the class of Ewan Mackinlay and young gun Nicholas Newton, put things back in our favour. The two boys held on with superb batting and chased down the total of 61 after only 16 overs to claim a memorable win over Wagga High. Mackinlay finishing on 12 not out but the stand out was Nicholas Newton on 23 not out.We now continue with good form into the second round against the winner of Kooringal and Leeton. Mr Nelson and the team would also like to thank the students and teachers who showed their support.Thomas Newton (Captain) Lawn Bowls NewsWe recently held try outs for the school team to compete in the CHS knockouts. There was a high standard of bowling and team selection was difficult. It was great to have the support of the Culcairn Bowling Club once again by providing a great venue and some expert advice for the players from David Moore. The following players were selected to be in the squad with the first three players named to play our first game at Corowa on Tuesday, 2 April. 1.Sam Harrisson (skip)2.Blake Roulston3.Max Davis4.Drew Scholz (Em. 1)5.Fletcher Kohlhagen (Em. 2)Congratulations boys – good luck next week.Coach Year 12 Fundraising One of the final activities for the Year 12 Fundraising Committee has been to organise an Easter Raffle. NAPLAN Practice Test: Thursday 4 April 2019 (Week 10)Our school will be participating in the NAPLAN Online practice test. It is one 45-minute omnibus test. The activity is for students in Years 7 and 9 and will take place during period 1 (Year 7) and period 3 (Year 9) next Thursday 4 April. There is no student preparation required for the practice test and there will be no reporting of student results. It is designed to give students an opportunity to become familiar with the NAPLAN Online test format and to help schools assess their technical and administrative readiness for NAPLAN Online. While we will have some spares available it is a requirement for students to be equipped with headphones / earphones for both the practice test and NAPLAN tests (no bluetooth please).NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.Between 14 and 24 May our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, including information regarding student exemption and disability adjustments, please contact the school. For more info: (www.nap.edu.au/naplan)• How to support your child during NAPLAN• information for parents and carers• Watch a video that explains NAPLAN Online• Subscribe to ACARA’s monthly parent newsletter, Parent Update
