Bill Brown’s Music Lessons for the Blind“That all may play!”

Over 15 years ago Bill Brown started recording music lessons for his students in an all-audio format for them to work with at home. On these recordings were demonstrations and instructions for songs that were actually beyond the student’s ability to read music for and yet they quickly learned these songs because while they were hard to read they weren’t hard to play. By making these “by ear” lessons part of his teaching curriculum he was able to progress his students faster and at the same time develop their “playing-by-ear” skills. He named this library of all-audio song lessons “Guitar by Ear.” He then soon found another very special use for these lessons on tape.

Bill had the chance to teach some visually-impaired students and found that these individuals were very receptive to this way of learning. He decided to make a beginning guitar course in the same all-audio format just for those with visual impairments. This way, once they learned the basics, they could then start expanding their repertoire by using the lessons in the ever-growing “Guitar by Ear” library. The packaged course, called “Intro to the Guitar for the Visually Impaired,” would also allow Mr. Brown’s teaching experience to go beyond his teaching studio and reach people around the world with the gift of music. Much has changed since then.

Besides just the guitar course there are now beginner courses for the piano, bass, drums, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, saxophone, ukulele, violin, flute, and penny whistle. Along with these beginner courses there are over 800 individual songs lessons (Guitar by Ear, Piano by Ear, Bass by Ear, etc.) for the student once they complete the “Intro to” course for their instrument. Furthermore, almost all of Mr. Brown’s “Intro to” and “By Ear” lessons are carried by the National Library Service, a division of the Library of Congress.

This booklet will detail the courses and song lessons that are part of Bill Brown’s “Intro to” and “By Ear” offerings. Other catalogs for the different instruments may accompany this booklet as well.
