bike future presentation: bike futures: building healthy communities through bike riding
DESCRIPTION
La Trobe University is a vibrant and modern University with around 30,000 staff and students located in multiple campuses in regional and urban Victoria. The Environmental Sustainability Unit within the University’s Infrastructure and Operations Group is responsible for designing, implementing and promoting various sustainability initiatives like public transport information and providing cycling infrastructure. In recent years there have been a number of infrastructure upgrades, programs and activities implemented to support, promote and increase cycling to and from the Melbourne campus. Initiatives include: Construction of two secure Cycle Smart Centres which include lockers and showers for cyclists; Installation of additional hoops and smaller secure facilities on metro and regional campuses – total number of hoops on the main Bundoora Campus is now XXX; Improvements to road marking and cycle paths around the campus; Installation of a bicycle repair hub complete with bike repair stand and parts vending machine; Development and roll out of an campus wide bike share program for staff and student to utilise on the Bundoora Campus; Bicycle confidence training for international students; Working with local councils to improve cycle paths and shimmy routes to and from the Bundoora Campus; Online mapping of facilities which is accessible via Google Maps: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zhjwGyq_B2G8.ksu9KtjL3uGk Design, production and distribution of “lock it or lose it…” bicycle security information and awareness cards Monthly free ‘Bikers Brekkies’ and participation in ‘Ride to Uni/Work day’ and the annual ‘Around the Bay in a Day’ event; and Target to reduce single-occupancy car use and increase bicycle patronage; Various cycling related information promoted at Open Days, staff induction days and through our Transport Central webpages: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/transport-central latrobe.edu.au The University also performs an annual mode-share transport survey, which is used to ascertain the mode of transport the La Trobe community uses to travel to a from the Bundoora and Bendigo Campuses. This has been used to determine the number of cyclist (200-400) that ride on a regular basis to the Campus. The last three multi modal surveys have seen the percentage of cyclist vary from 2%, 3% and to 1%. Although these figures are thought to be skewed, and are heavily influenced by the weather conditions on the day. There is capacity for around 600 bikes on the Melbourne campus, and although they are never completely full on a nice day it is hard to find a hoop for a bike.TRANSCRIPT
