TAIPEI, Taiwan – The big factor that’s expected to boost road bike sales – the use of disc brakes in professional road racing – is close to introduction through UCI approval. This was an-nounced at the 2015 Taipei Cycle Show. Here it was said, “Very soon we can expect a decision by the UCI on when disc brakes can be used in UCI races. Next to the introduction timing details will also be announced on standards with which the disc brakes will need to comply.”

PARIS, France – As in other leading EU markets, bike sales in France surged in volume and turnover last year. E-bike sales increased sharply by 37% to 77,500 units. Growth in overall bicy-cle sales of 7% to 2,977,600 units is re-ported for 2014 to a total value of €918.8 million. The average retail price rose by 8.5% to €307. P&A sales were up 6% to €697.3 million compared to 2013. A complete Market Report France will be in Bike Europe’s May edition.
French E-Bike Market Fol-lows Upward Trend as 2014 Sales Shows Sharp Increase
Accell Sets Standard for Euro Zone Price IncreaseGazelle (part of the Pon Bicycle Business Group) reports that, as a result of the rising costs of com-ponents, the company has to change the recom-mended retail price of bicycles and components in its current range as of April 10, 2015. Only the price of e-bike batteries will remain the same. The price adjustments did not come as a sur-prise as it was a much-discussed topic at the Taipei Cycle Show. The question was not if, but how much prices for model year 2015 bikes and bike products would increase. In late March Accell Group was the first to raise its prices. It is expected that like Accell and Gazelle, more European brands and distributors will follow soon or have already increased their prices.
AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Accell Netherland’s announcement late March to increase the price of bicycles by 5% was soon followed by the next big player on the Dutch market – Gazelle.
“The component’s purchase prices have increased substantially, due to the strong depreciation of the euro against the US dollar,” said Gazelle in a statement last April on the rising recommend-ed retail prices. The increases will differ per model, but on average it results in a 5% rise.
China To Undergo Quality Transformation
Emerging high-end industry and e-bike market in China
announced in the current 5-year plan, the gov-ernment does not only want to upgrade the vehicle quality. It is also CBA’s task to remove the millions of lead-acid battery equipped scooter style electric two wheelers from the streets in China and replace them by bicycle style vehicles utilising lithium batteries. As a result of this decision the market share of lithium batteries is expected to reach one third of the total sales, or 10 million units by 2019. Today some 3,000 companies offer lithium battery packs for two-wheelers, which are often of low quality, as only the price counts. The

participate in this transformation process. The CBA is a powerful organisation in China with a triple function: on the one hand the as-sociation represents the bicycle industry’s in-terests and on the other hand it is part of the government to control and direct the industry according to government policies. At the same time the CBA is the national organization for standardisation.According to the CBA the participation of the global bicycle industry will play an important part in the conversion of China’s domestic low-end e-bike market into a quality market. Drastically Changing Bike Industry Landscape
Chinese government wants to concentrate the production of higher quality, reliable, and safe batteries at five main manufacturers only, with-in four years. In order to protect the domestic market from safety issues, which have already harmed the electric two-wheelers’ image, the CBA joined the Battery Safety organization (www.BATSO.org) in October 2014 and is now using the BATSO Test manual and certification process governed by TÜV Rheinland.

Both developments hold serious implica-tions for the country’s e-bike industry. The China Bicycle Association (CBA) calls upon the international bicycle industry to
