bight [bit} n. 1. A loop in a rope or cable in logging referred to cable looped around a log when it was moved; 2. A bend or curve. A wide bay formed by such a bend or curve.

I grew up on the back of a fire truck. My Grandpa Chuck was the chief of Fire District 11 and my dad was an avid volunteer. From holiday parties with the volunteers’ families and riding on the fire truck during parades to attending Fire Musters (think of the Celtic Games with buckets, fire trucks and fire hoses), it was an ideal childhood filled with a sense of community.

It seems that firefighting is in my family’s blood. My brother David was just old enough when he began volunteering, which was soon followed by his participation in the high school’s fire fighting program. He never ‘grew out’ of it – today he is a Lieutenant at Griffin Fire Department at Steamboat Island and a Commissioner for Fire District 11.

This year was one of the worst fire seasons the State of Washington has ever seen. Fatalities and the loss of homes were rampant although our firefighters were hard at work. My brother worked on the 231 and the Chelan Complex Fire. At Chelan, he initially was scheduled for a week but that was extended to 21 consecutive days. His crew, like hundreds of others, is responsible for saving lives, homes, and animals through their service. Having him gone for such a length of time, especially as other firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty, really hit home for me. While he returned safe & sound, it made me start thinking what can be done locally in Mason County.

According to justbethere.org, a website dedicated to the recruitment of volunteer

firefighters, there is a volunteer firefighter staffing challenge as many departments have not recruited volunteers rapidly enough to keep pace with those they are losing. Approximately 3,900 volunteers sign up each year while 3,700 are lost annually. Further, a governing standard indicates the state actually needs 9,000 more responders to provide adequate coverage and meet appropriate response times.

Most of the 13 Fire Districts in Mason County are staffed solely by volunteers. You may not know that most fire careers begin with being a volunteer and the training is coordinated and paid for by the fire districts after volunteers pass an interview and background check. To become fully trained as a firefighter, approximately 340 hours are involved for the initial recruit academy and testing. Many departments offer ongoing training once per week, which often times is a mandated requirement.

Because 90% of the calls the fire departments are responding to are for emergency medical services, many volunteers are also trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). The initial training to become

an EMT is 250 hours with continued education requirements.

Local paid and volunteer firefighters have the opportunity to participate in “State Mobilizations,” which is when a fire or event is too large for the local fire district to handle on its own causing state resources to be called in. At this time, fire districts may send a crew and/or apparatus to help the area in need of assistance, such as the big fires in Eastern Washington this summer.

Local fire districts and fire departments are in need of volunteers. If you have the time to dedicate to your community, it is a rewarding experience as well as a great opportunity to meet and volunteer with like-minded people who become an extended family. Don’t want to fight fires or go on EMS calls? There are also volunteer opportunities for non-responders to participate.

Call your local fire depart-ment or visit nwrems.org/mason-county-ems-council/ to learn more.

BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber 4

As I sit here considering all the good things the Chamber accomplished over the past year I find my-self wondering where the time went. It seems like just a few short weeks ago I was the President Elect apprehensively waiting to start my term as President of the Board of Trustees. Thanks to the amazing Chamber staff and my dedicated fellow board members the year has flown by and at the same time, their dedication allowed us to accomplish the goals that were set forth at the beginning of my term.

Kelley Crabtree | 2015 Chamber Board President General Manager, Maple Glen Senior Living

During my time as a board member, as well as my tenure as President, I continue to be amazed how involved the Chamber is with community development and how much I have learned by spending time serving the Chamber. More accurately, I might say how much I have realized I didn’t know about what was going on in Shelton and Mason County! I now have a much greater respect for our city and county officials, for the work the Chamber does to support those endeavors, and to grow our business community.

In January the Chamber’s board set two main goals. I am thrilled to report that we

will have met both of them by the end of the year. Our first goal was to develop a communications strategy to ensure that our membership is well informed regarding the goings on of our community and our Chamber.

Some of the items this project addressed are this magazine, our email communications and announcements, and our use of social media and looking at the effectiveness of those tools. Our strategy involved creating networks that will grow and change with the Chamber to help keep members well informed in all areas of our operations. A roadmap, if you will, so future boards can look

back to see what we’ve tried, what has and has not worked, and where we continue to strive to be. I believe we have succeeded in doing this and in the process are helping future board members spend less time “figuring it out” and more time moving forward.

Our second goal involved delivering a Visioning Plan for the downtown core. I am happy to report a final plan for the downtown revitalization project was published earlier this month. This was an awesome project involving many local residents, businesses, the City of Shelton and the Chamber. It’s the perfect example of how coming

together as a team can help accomplish goals and better our community. I look forward to the coming year and seeing everyone’s hard work come to fruition as the plan gets underway.

One thing is for certain, there will be no shortage of work for the Chamber’s board and staff in the coming year. I thank you all for the honor of serving as your President during 2015 and look forward to my duties as Past President in 2016.

I have no doubt we will remain successful as we continue to enhance the vibrant community in which we work, live, and play.

Bright Lights and Big Hearts

As we approach the holiday season Christmas Town, USA will again dress up in its trim-mings of lights, garland, and greenery, as our winter beautification program opens. Together with Shelton & Kristmas Town Kiwanis Clubs and Hood Canal Communications, the décor sets a cozy setting for a hometown holiday.

While some communities have discontinued their beautification programs, our community has rallied – putting us in a position to continue to adorn the streets with flower baskets in the summer and Christmas decorations in the winter. Residents and visitors alike have generously given nearly $17,000 in this year alone. With continued support, the Chamber is hopeful to sustain and expand the program over the next several years.

2,080 is the number of hours a full-time, 40-hours-a-week employee will work in one year. In 2014 alone, Hood Canal Communication’s 37 employees personally volunteered nearly 5,000 hours of their time to a variety of causes, events and fundraising activities – that’s the equivalent to nearly 2.5 full-time employees.

HCC employee Spencer Jones is a vol-unteer firefighter who has also coached a number of youth sports programs. He largely attributes his passion for volun-teering to his employment. “Working for HCC made volunteering possible – one of our core values is community involve-ment and service. It’s like a family.”

HCC is a family-run company with a history of forward thinking in the communications industry.

From their beginnings as a small rural telephone company in 1934, their focus has been on keeping the community connected via their utilities. But they also have a history of keeping the community connected in another, bigger way: making a difference in Mason County.

The instrumental role they took on providing assistance to this summer’s forest fire victims and firefighters is a recent demonstration of that dedication. This July, in less than seven days, HCC employees rallied the community to fill a 53’ semi-truck full of nonperishable food, water, toiletries (Gold Bond was a huge hit!), and children’s supplies to be delivered to Steven’s County Fairgrounds where forest fire evacuees were located.

They restocked the empty shelves – taking more than three hours to unload, unpack, and restock everything.Beyond encouraging their employees to personally give back to the community, HCC has also put their money where their mouth is. Over the past five years, the company has sponsored 26 sports teams and 21 charitable programs. One program that is particularly near and dear to their heart is the Hood Canal Food Bank.

HCC makes a monthly donation to the Food Bank and hosts a food drive every year. Kathy Roberson, the food bank’s executive director, says that 500-550 families are served by on a monthly basis in the greater Hood Canal area and she says that wouldn’t be possible without the support of HCC. Between their food drives and monetary donations, she estimates that nearly 1/3 of the families would go without. “It couldn’t be done without HCC’s contribution. They are such a big help,” she says. “We couldn’t do it without them – it would be like losing a member of the family.”

In a world where often times the bottom line is the only thing being considered, it is reassuring to know that Mason County still has businesses like Hood Canal Communications who care for our community as if they truly are family.

Chamber Members to Elect New Leadership

Deidre Eaton Chamber Membership Director

Each fall nominations are announced for the next year’s Chamber Board of Trustees. The Nominating Committee recommends a slate of candidates, while additional nominations were taken from the floor during the October member-ship meeting.

Eligible nominees must be in good standing, have given their consent to serve, and may not have served more than the maximum of two, consecutive two-year terms. Those nominees who are elected to the Board are responsible to determine policies and set goals, which are carried out by the staff and Chamber committees. The nomination and selection process is crucial to the Chamber’s future. “Our success is based upon a strong Board of Trustees who represent the diversity of our member industries and geograph-ical areas,” says Executive Director Heidi McCutcheon. “That is exceed-ingly important as the Board plots our strategic direction and provides insight on any number of matters.”

Board members who have continued into the second of the two-year terms are Kelley Crabtree of Maple Glen Senior Living and Patty Ayala Ross of Shelton & Hoodsport Timberland Regional Libraries. The list of current board members can be found on page 2 of this magazine. Ballots containing Board nominations will be mailed to all members in good standing for the annual election. Newly elected Trustees will be formally installed at the Awards Gala held on Friday, January 15, 2016.

Chamber PromotesEntrepreneurship in Hood Canal School

When life gives you lemons – become an entrepreneur!

This July the Chamber launched a pilot program of Lemonade Day as part of Hood Canal School’s Summer Program partnering with the Economic Develop-ment Council. Lemonade Day is a free, community-wide, educational program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand. The purpose of the program was simple: teach 5th to 8th grade students what it means to be an entrepreneur.

Local business people presented portions of the curriculum and acted as mentors throughout the program. The students had a lofty task ahead of them! They set goals, created a budget, pitched an investor, chose a site location, created an advertising plan, built the stand, tallied results, and made financial decisions.

After running the Orca Pride Lemonade Stand for two days, the students netted a profit of $356.

Then they had to decide what to do with it… As was recommended by Lemonade Day, the students opted to spend one third, save one third, and share one third

with charity. The students opted to divide the third for charity between the Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund and the Humane Society of Mason County. The portion they would spend and save was carefully calculated by teacher Russell Husted based on participation in the program. Each participant received a Visa gift card to spend and a check from the Chamber to save – hopefully in a local savings account!

The mentors and school staff were thrilled to see that the program did indeed impact the students and that they learned valuable life skills – leadership, teamwork, social skills, and confidence to name a few.

Page 15: Bight Newsletter 2015

BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber 14 15 BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

Certainly, Lemonade Day would not have been a success without those people who lent their time and talents. A huge thank you goes out to Superintendent Shawn Batstone and 5th Grade Teacher Russell Husted of Hood Canal Schools for model-ing this fun, educational entrepreneurship program.

The mentors – Kristy Buck of John L. Scott Real Estate, Dan Cooling of Anchor Bank, Pam Hanson of Cameo Boutique & Gift Shop, Darren Eisele of Hood Canal Com-munications, Mike Gill of ProBuild, David Hughes, Jennifer Owens, and Kandice Clouatre of Peninsula Credit Union, Dick Larkin of SCORE, Lynn Longan and Jen-nifer Baria of Mason County EDC, Heidi McCutcheon of the Chamber of Com-merce, Kristin Masteller of PUD#1, Mason County Commissioner Randy Neatherlin, Ji Lee of Osaka Sushi & Asian Bistro, Karen Schade of Edward Jones, Wes Taylor of Taylor Shellfish, Bo Tinaza of Fitness Ablaze, and Cara Treadwell of Columbia Bank Hoodsport, – were inspiring, flexible, and encouraging and we extend our deepest appreciation to each of them.

Lastly, our thanks goes out to all of those customers who purchased a beverage at the Orca Pride Lemonade Stand.

Lemonade Day and other school partner-ships and workforce development programs are organized by the Chamber’s Member Services Committee. For more information contact the Chamber Office at (360) 426-2021.

Election Outcomes Infer Many Changes Ahead Julie Nichols, Whitehouse & Nichols, LLPChamber Government Affairs Committee

City of Shelton ElectionsIt was another nail-biter for those watching the City of Shelton race results on Election Night.  Mayor Gary Cronce ended up being re-elected by only 60 votes after a spirited campaign brought by challenger and local civic activist Marilyn Vogler.  As far as May-or Cronce’s goal in the coming year, the incumbent said, “We have to lessen the regulatory requirements to build houses and open businesses.  This is the way to get the revenue stream going in the positive direction.”

When all the votes were tallied, the voters in Shelton also chose challenger Kathleen McDowell over incumbent City Commissioner Mike Olsen by a margin of 62 percent to 38 percent.  At the October 15, 2015 General Elec-tion Candidate Forum sponsored by the Chamber, Olsen and McDowell expressed clear differences of opinion on a variety of issues, specifically new fees and the City’s debt load.

McDowell’s victory is expected to shift the balance of power on the Com-mission.  “I am looking forward to working to get the city back on its feet financially by building a strong, healthy city with new business and new build-ing – and getting some revenue in so we can do projects that need to be done to attract new business,” McDowell said when asked what she was looking forward to in 2016.

Other Election NewsThe Port of Shelton Commission will also get a new face for 2016.  Former small business owner and Sage Book-store employee Sue Patterson unseated incumbent Tom Wallitner.

Shelton School Board will see a signif-icant change as only one incumbent candidate prevailed in their race to return in 2016:  Sandy Tarzwell (de-feating Cheryl Williams).  The three new faces joining the Board are Shelton native Keri (Smith) Davidson (de-feating Terry Miller), longtime Hood

Downtown VisioningThe Chamber continues to work with the City and downtown merchants on a plan to move forward with a compre-hensive effort for downtown revitaliza-tion. The Chamber, City and Forterra published the results from the Down-town Visioning process in early Octo-ber and a group of downtown mer-chants and other stakeholders will start meeting in early 2016.  “Like many other people and business owners, I am personally invested in the Visioning effort and do not want to see it sit on a shelf.  We need to get together and think of creative ways given our limited funds to move forward with this effort in 2016,” said Mayor Cronce.

Chamber Supports Educational Forum at Olympic CollegeEducators and businesses discussed local education goals at the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon, Oct. 22. Alex Apostle, Shelton School District’s new superintendent, David Mitchell, president of Olympic College, and Shawn Batstone, superintendent and principal of Hood Canal School presented current programs offered at their facilities.

Alex Apostle spoke about ways in which the community could work together to improve graduation in Mason County. “We have a 67 percent high school graduation rate in Shelton,” Apostle said. “Sixty-seven percent is quite frankly not acceptable. The goal is 100 percent of kids graduate and why not?”

The forum covered current educational enrichment opportunities for students and discussed strategies in which the community partners could implement additional programs to improve schools in the area and better prepare our kids for the future.

Chamber Prepares for Year’s Best awardsAs we enter fall and approach winter, it seems natural to think of what has been accomplished in the past year. Nominations have been made for Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Lifetime Dedication Award.

2015 Business of the Year | Peninsula Credit Union

Following the nominations process, ballots are mailed to all members in good standing and each Chamber member is permitted one vote. Nominations can be made by anyone so if you missed your chance to share who you believe is deserving of the honor, keep that business or individual in mind for next year.

The Business of the Year award honors the business that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Shelton and Mason County business community over

the past year. Last year, the award went to Peninsula Credit Union.

The Chamber also recognizes its volunteers for their contributions to the Chamber›s programs and activities. 2015 recipient for Volunteer of the Year was Susanna Samuelson. Citizen of the Year was awarded to

Melanie Bakala who made outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large. President›s Choice was awarded to Lisa Woodard who was honored for her dedication and work ethic, matched only by her energy.

CHAMBER SHARES CHALK, HAPPINESS.Remember when you were a kid and you’d draw pictures and write happy thoughts with chalk in your driveway and down the sidewalks of your street? And the adults always smiled when they read the big pastel colored messages?

Nationwide Chalk the Walks Day is just like that. Only we’re bigger now and we don’t have to go in the house when the street lights go out. The idea is as simple as it was in childhood: write happy messages, have fun doing it, and spread some joy while you’re at it.

The Chamber handed out 50 boxes of chalk to children and adults who reveled in the fun! Chamber member businesses also joined in the celebration and hosted various impromptu events around Mason County – bringing joy and childlike wonder to all.

In case you missed it, here is a collection of images from this year’s event. Feeling inspired? Be sure to check the Chamber events calendar for next year’s date and stop by with your family to pick up your box of chalk to spead some happiness!
