fering an exciting initiative for Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) Senior Community Centers and

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) by providing highly-engaging educational program-

ming. The project, called Mind Matters, delivers a monthly series of intellectually stimulating lectures

by knowledgeable presenters on topics of most interest to older adults. Our Senior Center offers two:

Wednesday, May 1st at 9:30 a.m. The subject matter on this date will be about Pennsylvania Barns

with Curt Musselman, Historian and Barn Preservationist. A Gettysburg, PA native, Curt is a retired

Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg National Military Park and a Past President of the Historic

Preservation Society of Gettysburg – Adams County (HGAC). He has led the HGAC Barn Preservation

Project and its historic barn survey since its inception in 2005. This lecture will show you how to identify

the architectural style of barn known as the Pennsylvania Barn. It then goes on to explore the three clas-

ses and some of the many types and sub-types of Pennsylvania Barns. This lecture is based upon the

work of Emeritus Professor Robert Ensminger of Kutztown University and includes a variety of photos of

barns on the Gettysburg Battlefield and the surrounding countryside. Wednesday, June 26th at 9:30

a.m. The subject matter on this date will be on Chinese Immigrants to America and Chinatowns. Qun-

bin Xiong, MD of the Main Line Chinese Culture Center will be this video speaker. We are going to look

at Chinese immigrants to America and Chinatowns with some detailed looks at Pennsylvania. Qunbin

The Roaring 20s—a Century Later

The 1920s were called The Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age. It was a

boisterous period characterized by rapidly changing lifestyles, financial excess-

es and technological progress. Efforts of the suffragettes paid off with the pass-

ing of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Many women

(nicknamed Flappers) embraced this new freedom by abandoning their corsets,

cutting their hair short, and raising their hemlines, learning to drive and leav-

ing the domestic sphere to be socially and politically active. Dancing during the

1920s was an extremely popular social activity for all ages. The new styles of

jazz music inspired new fast-paced and energetic dances to be created, such as

the Charleston. Old favorites like the Tango, Waltz and Foxtrot continued to re-

main popular due to the efforts of Arthur Murray through his danced studios

and published manuals. American soldiers, returning from combat in the First

World War in Europe, brought back dances such as Le Java from France and

English Sequence Dances.

What is the Big Spring Senior Center doing to revisit the Roar-

ing 20s?

On May 10th from 9 a.m.—2 p.m. participants of the

County Senior Centers will be at the Doubling Gap Center,

Camp YoliJwa, for an opportunity to relive the dance/dress

age of the Roaring 20s. Come meet Jeff & Nancy of Dance An-

tiqua who have been invited to introduce the 1920s and its

free spirit through dance and music, giving the participants

an opportunity to learn the most popular dances of this era.

Every one is welcome to dress in period dress, if able. Also,

we welcome anyone who has a vintage 1920’s car that they

would love to show off in the parking lot—photo opportuni-

ties will be available too. We will be raffling off theme bas-

kets made by each Center so come with some lucky cash.

Cost of this event is $14 for Senior Center members and $16

for Non-Senior Center members. Breakfast and Chicken BBQ lunch is included.
