Welcome Remark
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to the 2018 CAPA Technical Symposium!
Big Data (BD) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been revolutionizing data analytics, data visualization, and predictive tools across various industries in recent years. As these disruptive tools have matured, understanding the power and challenges of BD and AI have been increasingly critical to business success. In this year’s Symposium, we will explore how BD and AI have affected the Oil and
Gas industry. We will discuss how BD and AI have been used to accelerate innovation, but also the challenges involved with finding resources, building infrastructure, and scaling these tools to maximize impact. We will also look at the prospects of BD and AI and how the industry plans to answer questions about its applicability, reliability, and security as these tools gain widespread adoption. We can’t wait to see where the conversations in this conference takes us and look forward to seeing how these tools can be used in your own business functions.
As you may imagine, organizing a CAPA symposium is a major undertaking. It involves the support of sponsors, corporate members, keynote speakers, technical authors, student presenters, business panels, and members to be successful. A big thanks to you all who have or plan to share your experience and time with us today. CAPA would like especially thank Marathon Oil Corporation’s continued support and permission to use this venue for the ninth consecutive year and the SEG (Society of Exploration Geophysicists), an Associate Society of CAPA, who has generously sponsored the Student Paper Contest for the sixth consecutive year to encourage student participation. A big thanks to Dr. Hong Jin, the vice-president of CAPA, and her team graciously devoted hours planning this year’s program, finding keynote speakers, and ensuring this year’s symposium would be a great success. In additional, we are very excited to have partnered with Chinese American Chemical Society (SW-CACS) to co-host the downstream/petrochemical session this year.
Founded in 1983, CAPA is a non-profit, non-political, and professional organization with over 1,600 registered members comprised of professionals from industry and academia. CAPA is committed to serving its members by promoting technical knowledge sharing and networking. Regarded as one of the most respected professional organizations in the greater Houston area, CAPA is proud to have served as a platform for technical and business development in the global Chinese petroleum-related community. CAPA hosts an annual OTC (Offshore Technology Conference) Dinner Reception event and CAPA/SETS Energy workshop and organizes multiple BP/CAPA Career Forum and quarterly Lunch & Learn events throughout the year. These events have provided our members with numerous opportunities for networking, coaching/mentoring, and knowledge-sharing.
Again, thank you for attending this year’s symposium and I wish everyone has an eventful and rewarding time here today.
