BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AUSTRALIAN GEOLOGICAL SERIALS AND OF OTHER AUSTRALIAN PERIODICALS THAT INCLUDE

GEOLOGICAL PAPERS

by Dorothy Hill and Carolyn Willadsen

PREFACE

The proliferation of Australian scientific, technical and popular science serials, together with the increasing complexity of our major library catalogues, has made bibliographic research increasingly difficult. This bibliography is offered primarily as an aid to research in all aspects of Australian geology, and also as a guide to consultation of the catalogues of the major Australian libraries; rules of thumb for such consultation appear in the explanatory introduction. Secondarily, it is offered as a guide to librarians and others wishing to complete sets of serials or to trace the interconnection between them.

INTRODUCTION

Geology as used herein includes sciences and topics variously identified in indexes as:- areal geology: biostratigraphy; coal geology (including economics and mining); crystallography; diastrophism; earth movements; economic geology (of metals, non-metals, energy sources); engineering geology; environmental geology; extraterrestrial geology; geochemistry; geochronology; geomechanics; geomorphology; geophysics (solid earth, applied, exploration); glacial geology; historical geology; history of geology; hydrogeology (including underground water); hydrology; industrial mineralogy; lithology; marine geology; mathematical methods in geology; metamorphism; mineral fuel economics; mineragraphy; mineralogy; mining geology; oceanography; ore deposits; orogenesis; palaeobiogeography; palaeoclimatology; palaeoecology; palaeogeography; palaeomagnetism; palaeontology (invertebrate, vertebrate, palaeobotany, palynology); palaeopedology; pedology; petroleum geology; petrology (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary); physical geology; planetology; Quaternary geology (including superficial deposits); regional geology; sedi- mentology; seismology; soil mechanics; speleology; stratigraphy; structural geology; surficial processes (weathering, transportation and deposition of detritus); tectonics; volcanology.

Geological and geophysical map series are not included; these would be better treated in a separate catalogue.

In determining the format for the entries in this bibliography, we have had in mind that one of its uses will be to enable geologists quickly to locate entries in the catalogues of our major libraries, where the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules are now in general use for author and title entries. However, the publication of a revised second edition of the Rules has complicated access through library catalogues, in that many libraries will in the next few years be introducing changes in their cataloguing based on that revision. The conventions followed in this bibliography are normally those of the first edition. It is extremely likely that even libraries changing their practice will retain references or added entries at the headings used in this list.

We only exceptionally list serials under the first letter of the first noun or adjective in their titles, the exception occurring when the title bears no apparent relation to the name of the responsible publishing body, which for cataloguing purposes is used as the name of the author. For example, the Australian Geologist, the current newsletter of the Geological Society of Australia, will be entered under Australian; whereas the Journal of the Geological Society will be found as Geological Society of Australia, Journal, just as an author’s name appears first in a primary entry. In some libraries cross-references are inserted in the catalogue.

When the body named or implied in a title is not a society, but a government agency, entry is normally by the name of the country or state. Thus, the Department of Mines of the State of Queensland, as well as the Geological Survey itself, publishes periodicals such as an Annual Report, and in such cases the primary entry will read:- Queensland, Department of Mines, Annual Report.

(in)

Unless there are special reasons to the contrary, government agencies are entered without reference to their place in the hierarchy of governmental administration. So most libraries will enter Australia, Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics, Bulletin, in that way rather than as Australia, Department of National Development, Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics, Bulletin; similarly with Queensland, Geological Survey, Publications. But the hierarchy of governmental organization, and indeed of any organization, is set out wherever it is necessary to avoid confusion: thus several departments of the University of Queensland publish papers, necessitating entries like University of Queensland, Department of Geology, Papers, rather than University of Queensland, Papers.

Despite the general comments of the last two paragraphs, there is an increasing tendency for libraries to enter some kinds of government agencies directly by their names, and that has been done in this list where the name begins with the adjective Australian, e.g. Australian Atomic Energy Commission.

Many Australian geologists have used in their lists of references, the abbreviated titles given either in the ‘World List of Scientific Periodicals published in the years 1900-1940’, 4th edit., 3 vols, 1963, London, Butterworth, or in the Unisyst System. While these have the virtue of brevity, they may bear little relation to the format adopted in modern library catalogues. Fortunately for geologists there exists an easy source of reference to a titles format that is reasonably consistent with today’s library practice, in the ‘Bibliography and Index of Geology’ published annually in 12 numbers by the Geological Society of America in co-operation with the American Geophysical Institute.

We hope that the descriptive data given in our entries will facilitate use of library catalogues. Variations in title of publishing body or of periodical are given because these often give rise to alternative listings. We give the city of domicile of the publishing body rather than the name of the suburb of that city; city of publication is given only when it is consistently different from that of the publishing body. In some instances short historical notes are added, to help trace earlier volumes with different title pages. Indexes are cited where these are known to us. We hope that the data given will be found useful to librarians and others wishing to complete sets of periodicals or to trace the interconnection between them.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Our debt to ‘Scientific Serials in Australian Libraries’ (SSAL), published by CSIRO, will be obvious; this work, which is available at all major libraries, should be used in conjunction with our bibliography, to ascertain where the various serials may be consulted; it is in process of re-organization on microfiche, and is the only catalogue that lists the holding of each scientific serial in each major Australian library. Our alphabetical listing system for titles is similar to though not identical with that of SSAL.

We also express our gratitude for help given by many Australian geologists and librarians, notably Dr Tom Darragh of the National Museum of Victoria, to whom the content of our entries on Victorian Government publications is due, and to A.Prof. T.G. Vallance of the University of Sydney, for his help with New South Wales and other old and rare serials not available in Queensland libraries. Dr John Glover of the University of Western Australia performed a like service for Western Australian periodicals, as did A.Prof. Jones of the University of Adelaide and Dr Max Banks of the University of Tasmania, for Adelaide University and Tasmanian serials respectively.

Mr Spencer Routh of the University of Queensland Library read our MS and made helpful suggestions.

Many others have assisted in various ways:- Miss Jeannette Adrian, Geological Survey of New South Wales; Prof. F. Beavis, University of New South Wales; Ms P. Buxton, South Australian Institute of Technology; Mrs Beth Cook, University of Queensland Library; Dr J.M. Dickins, BMR; Mrs Margaret Eva, University of Queensland Geology Librarian; Dr N.H. Fisher, BMR; J.M. Flower, Australian Institute of Petroleum, Ltd; Ms Kass Gardiner, University of Queensland Library; Mrs E. Hepburn, Mineralogical Society of New South Wales; Dr P.A. Jell, National Museum of Victoria; A.Prof. F.C. Loughnan, University of New South Wales; Dr Nell Ludbrook, Adelaide; A. Mykytiuk, Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory; L.C. Noakes, BMR; J.M. Rayner, BMR; Dr P.C. Rickwood, University of New South Wales; Prof. A.E. Ringwood, Australian National University; Ms A. Russell, University of Queensland Library; Mrs E. Sawyer, Mawson Institute for Antarctic Research; and Mrs Ann Tindall, Mineralogical Society of Victoria.

The members of the academic staff of the Department of Geology of the University of Queensland all contributed by nominating serials for inclusion or rejection. Mrs Merle Stern of the secretarial staff assisted with some typing.

Finally we thank Miss J.M. Hoare, and Mrs P. Carter of the Vari- typing section of the University administration for the final product.
