BibleWorks 4The Premier Biblical Exegesis and Research Program
Version 4 is here!Version 4 is here!
Which Bible program should I use?
Whether youre preparing a sermon, doing complex morphological analysis, or
writing a seminary paper, scholars agree that BibleWorks is the best tool available.
For close exegesis of the original text, BibleWorks is indispensible. Here's what
you get: 58 Bible translations in 20 languages, 9 original language texts with 7
morphology databases, 5 Greek lexicons and dictionaries, 3 Hebrew lexicons
and dictionaries, plus 8 practical reference works (including the ISBE)! While
other programs are merely loose collections of books, BibleWorks tightly integrates
its databases with the most powerful morphology and analysis tools.
As you consider buying a high-end Bible research package, youll have to weigh
cost, database quality, program features, searching capabilities, and customer
support. In every one of these areas, we believe BibleWorks is the best. Well
make our case in the following sections. Buy the program, and you can decide
for yourself. We offer a 90-day money-back guarantee.
Our Commitment
Our goal is to further the Kingdom of God through the ministry of the Word; our
commitment is to pastors, students, scholars, and missionaries. We want
BibleWorks to be useful for you. We interact at every level with our users on a
daily basis. Many of the features in BibleWorks are the direct result of user
requests and suggestions. If you find something is missing, tell us. Our lead
programmer spends several hours a week interacting with users something
unheard of in the software industry. If you find a reproducible program bug or
a database error, we will fix it and have an update on the Web in short order,
often the same day it is reported.

Grammatical and Morphological Searches Are a Breeze
If you dont have much experience with computers, or your Greek and Hebreware rusty, the BibleWorks Morphology Assistant and Command Line Assistantmake it simple to build complex grammatical and morphological searches. With these assistants, the beginning user can easily construct detailed andcomplex language queries. (Advanced users who have mastered the codescan quickly type in queries using a terse query language.)
The Morphology Assistant lets you click and selectany morphology to find though a simple table. Youcan specify part of speech, tense, voice, mood, gender, case, number, stem, aspect, etc.
With the Command Line Assistant, you type in the words or morphologicalconstructs for which to search, and then click and select how to search(search for all words, search for any word, exclude words, find verses inproximity, etc.).
Complex Searches
No artificial limits will impede yourstudy and research when yousearch with BibleWorks. You cansearch for words, groups of words, phrases, parts of speech, tenses, etc. With the new, second-generation search engine, you cangraphically construct complexqueries. Put wildcards anywhere, search for articles and prepositions, and make the search condition ascomplex as possible. Look for repeated words in a string, specify agreement, exclude words, all in the same query! You can limit the search to an arbitrarycollection of passages or books, or search the entire Bible. Theres no fasterway to find these answers. Here are some examples of the more complexsearches that are possible with BibleWorks:
nFind within a context of ten words all instances of a dative or accusativeparticiple not immediately preceded by an agreeing article, and followed byan agreeing article and noun, excluding cases where a word from aspecified list intervenes.nFind all verses where the KJV uses "faith" and the Greek NT uses "pi,stij."
When youre done searching, BibleWorks gives you detailed statistics and letsyou transfer texts, verses, parallel passages from different versions, entireBibles, and lexicon entries to your favorite word processor. When you need abreak, BibleWorks lets you store your lists of verses for another day.
Break the Language Barrier
Overcome the barrier between you and theoriginal language texts. With BibleWorks Auto-Info feature, seeing and parsing the underlyingGreek or Hebrew words is as simple as waving themouse pointer. As the mouse moves over anyword in a BibleWorks taggedtext, the Greek or Hebrewlexicon definition for the originaltext is shown at the bottom of the window, alongwith the parsing. The following Bible versionshave Auto-Info: the Greek NT, the LXX, the BHS,the KJV, as well as some of the other English,German, French, Dutch, and Russian versions.
Line-By-Line
In Multi-Version Mode, the Bible versions you arestudying are shown in asingle window with thepassage from each text. This is the basic work-horse window ofBibleWorks. You can openseveral of these at once.
Any Parallel Bible
If you like working with parallel columns, simply click on the translationsyou want to see. The Parallel Versions window puts the Bibles in parallelcolumns where you canscroll the columns in sync,or independently.BibleWorks lets you saveall of your favorite ParallelVersions configurations ina convenient menu, sothat you can easily pull upyour "NKJV-Greek NT-NRSV" or "NAS-Lutherbibel-BHS Hebrew-LXX" parallel window withjust a click of the mouse. You get Auto-Info here, too, as well as tight links tothe lexicons anddictionaries.
Write a Commentary and Keep Your Desk Clean
Get rid of all those lexicons, dictionaries, concordances, and scribbled notesthat clutter up your desk when youre buried deep in textual study. In all ofthese windows, you can click, or just point to any word and get theinformation you need (concordance, lexicon, Bible dictionary, etc.). You canalso attach notes (with Greek and Hebrew!) to verses and have themautomatically pop up when the verse is opened. BibleWorks works smoothlywith other programs, making it simple to transfer texts to your favorite wordprocessor.
Arrange the Furniture
BibleWorks accomodates users who spend significant amounts of time withthe program. In response to the variety of user suggestions, window sizes, window placement, output format, abbreviations, and font sizes can all becustomized. In addition, many requests for mouse and keyboard short-cutshave been put into the program. Fewer clicks save wrists!
Type in Greek and Hebrew
BibleWorks comes with TrueType and PostScript fonts for accented Greek andpointed Hebrew. The fonts can be used in any Windows word processor andprint beautifully. With the built-in editor, you can also take notes in English,Greek, and right-to-left Hebrew. These samples use the BibleWorks Greekand Hebrew fonts.
Learn By Example
Dont worry if this kind of program isnew to you. Weve included tutorial
videos on the CD to help you getstarted with BibleWorks (requires a
sound card). In the videos, the narrators voice leads
you through the basic andadvanced features of the
program. In additionto the videos,
BibleWorks comeswith detailed on-line
help and a detailed, printed manual.

Database Quality
The most commonly used Bible translations are essentially error-free, butsome specialized versions and the Greek and Hebrew morphologicaldatabases used today still need work. This is a new industry, and it will taketime for these databases to settle. This is true of all packages on the market.Be wary of anyone who claims perfection in this area. Database quality is amoving target -- the more important issue is a companys commitment tocorrecting problems and providing a quality product. It will be a few yearsbefore the quality of these databases will be such that you can store your copyof Hatch and Redpath in the attic! Until then, serious scholars will want tocross-check final conclusions with the standard printed reference works.
Substantial progress has been made, and ongoing projects continue toimprove the quality of our databases. Correction to these databases and ourother versions are posted to our web site on a regular basis. They are free todownload for registered BibleWorks users.

Something New Under the Sun:Computer Concordances and Biblical Study
Dr. Ralph Klein
[From an article written for The Christian Century, November 12, 1997. Adapted byHermeneutika with permission.]
For Hebrew Bible scholars there were the works of Solomon Mandelkern andGerhard Lisowsky. Abraham Even-Shoshan assembled a more up-to-date,Mandelkern-like Hebrew concordance. For New Testament or Greek scholarsthere were the large Moulton and Geden, and Schmoller concordances. Thoserestricted to the English text for their word studies often turned to the analyticaland/or exhaustive concordances based on the King James Version by RobertYoung, Alexander Cruden, and James Strong. The Hebrew word dabar has morethan eighty English equivalents in the KJV (e.g. word, act, case, dearth, power, song, tidings, wherewith), and the denotations and connotations of the Hebrewword can be studied by a painstaking use of Strongs numbers. In recent years, computers have been used to generate hard copy, analytical concordances of theRSV, NIV, and NRSV. Computers took some of the editors drudgery away andproduced books that were more attractive and, probably, more accurate, but stillnot decisively different than their great 18th and 19th century predecessors.
But now programmers have designed new biblical search engines for the PersonalComputer that far outstrip anything that could be done with a hard copy Englishor original language concordance, such as looking for specific verb or noun formsor even phrases or clauses, lexically or grammatically. These entries can besought in the original languages or in multiple English and European translations, all texts displayed interleaved by verse or in parallel by passage, and all this canbe accomplished in seconds or tenths of seconds, and the customized resultsprinted out on a high quality laser printer.
Since I have used the BibleWorks for Windows program most, my comments beloware based primarily on it.
So What Do These Electronic Concordances Do? Four Benefits....
1. BibleWorks helps people read the Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible.
Because of the broad-ranging and demanding M.Div. curriculum and the relatively-late start many get in seminary education, most seminary students barely getenough Hebrew and Greek to navigate through exegetical coursesand thenrapidly forget what they did learn. I am convinced that wise users of programslike BibleWorks can maintain and improve their original language ability. One canput on the screen the original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek text and list under theoriginal languages as many interlinear versions as one wants [currently, 67interleaved versions in 22 languages]. Wave the mouse over the Hebrew or Greektext and a little window gives you a complete parsing of the word and its fulldefinition from excellent biblical lexicons.
In the past, parsing verb forms and looking up vocabulary have formed too deep aditch for many a seminarian and young pastor to get over. Now the answers shineout from the BibleWorks computer screen, making it possible to compare thebest of the modern versions with the original, or even to produce an original
translation, without having to spend hours thumbing through a big old lexicon ortrying to recall the recognition points of the Hebrew Piel.
Persons who had basic courses in the biblical languages and would be willing todevote twenty minutes a day to such language study during their ministry wouldhave enough linguistic skill to base their sermon text study on the original text.
Im so convinced of this that when I teach beginning Hebrew, I introduceBibleWorks on the first day of the course, project it on a screen, and demonstratehow it can supplement the students linguistic knowledge. As students learn thebasic paradigms and the structure of Biblical Hebrew, they will be able tounderstand and gain access to the wealth of information stored on the BibleWorksCD-ROM and have a fighting chance of maintaining and improving their linguisticskill throughout their ministry. Instead of settling for the minimum in biblicallanguages, I teach that minimum AND I introduce the BibleWorks product that willmake Bible translation and exegesis and exposition almost nice.
2. BibleWorks enables users to make fresh word studies while vastlyreducing the tedium and the time required to assemble the basic data.
In seconds, computer Bible software programs can perform searches of the Bibletext that would otherwise be virtually impossible. Take the second word in theHebrew Bible, created. A root (lemma) search finds 54 occurrences in 0.7seconds.
I can scroll through the list of each of these occurrences in its Hebrew contextand read an interleaved translation of the corresponding verse in NRSV [or RSV,KJV, NKJV, NIV, NASB, NAB, etc.].
I can quickly note how frequently this verb is distributed by book across the OT.In a few seconds, I can transfer all forty-six verses to an editing window and printthem outHebrew with parallel Englishfor more detailed study. If I search onthe English word created, I get only 33 occurrences and no assurance that all ofthese are renditions of the Hebrew word bara. In fact, they are not alwaystranslations of that Hebrew word.
Another advantage of using an original language concordance is that one canstudy a given morphological form of a word. How is the verb used in the Aorist? When its subject is 3fs? When a noun has a first person singular suffix (e.g. mychild)? Whats the difference in meaning between the Niphal and the Piel?Incidentally, people who teach biblical language can come up with plenty of newexamples for exercises by using an electronic concordance. One could list all 109Hophal perfects in the Old Testament or only the 12 that occur in Jeremiah. Priorto Bible software on computer, you would have to page through every page of thelexicon to find this information.
What if your knowledge of Hebrew or Greek is very weak, almost nonexistent, because you never had a course in it or have forgotten everything you learned?Lets study the word messiah in the Old Testament. Once you find a passagewhere the word anointed is used with the meaning you want (e.g. Psa 2:2), youwill see that Strongs number for anointed is H4899 and the transliterationchosen is mashiyach. In a split second you will get the list of the 38 verses in theOld Testament where this Hebrew noun occurs. Just to complicate things a bit,try searching for anoint*, where the asterisk stands as a wild card for anyendinganoint, anoints, anointing, anointed and the total now climbs to 140
times in 129 verses. In BibleWorks you can do this for the Strongs tagged EnglishKJV or Revised Websters or French LSG or German LUO or Dutch SVV or RussianRST, with interleaved verse display or parallel passage display of any or allversions and the Greek NT and Hebrew OT (and LXX and Latin Vulgate) texts, synchronized by verse number.
Boolean searches include words (operators) like AND, OR, or NOT. Perhaps therewould be reason to find all verses in the Bible that refer to Peter, James, andJohn. Or one might want to look for all verses in the New Testament in which thenames of either Saul or Paul occurthat would help you to find all the referencesto the apostle before and after his call. One could find all the verses in whichPeter is mentioned and not Paul, or in which either Peter or Paul is mentioned, but not both.
Electronic concordance programs enable users to devise complex searches thatmeet their particular research needs.
Try using hard copy books to find all contexts containing reference to Jesus orChrist, AND Kingdom of God or Kingdom of Heaven. Try to find all OTHophal perfects. Try to find Hebrew waw-consecutives with certain forms ofcertain verbs. Try to find all Greek NT/LXX aorist passive phrases containingsome form of the Greek words for believe or convince or persuade. In seconds,BibleWorks can perform searches of the Bible text that would otherwise bepractically impossible.
3. BibleWorks produces impressive handouts for adult forums or othereducational programs.
Perhaps you want to study justice in the eighth century prophets with an adultBible class. With BibleWorks, easily print out all or select verses from anytranslation, then duplicate and distribute. Your comments or questions could beprinted in a different type face between the verses. Another example, the entiretext of John 4 could be printed out, and this production of an English or Spanishor German handout for that chapter would be much cheaper and more accuratethan having your secretary type it out, and better looking than xeroxing a pagefrom a regular printed Bible.
4. BibleWorks may become your dog-eared Bible.
BibleWorks allow users to add virtually limitless notes to specific chapters orverses, and one can use these notes and add to them throughout a lifetime.Through reading or study a pastor may discover new meanings or emphases, reflecting deep thinking and personal and ministerial experience. If one usesthese programs and adds notes on specific verses, a person is creating their ownpersonal commentary on the meaning of Scripture. My old battered copy of theRSV, mended with duct tape, that had marginal notes and underlinings where Iwanted them and needed them, was a walking file cabinet. But it could nevercontain the wisdom that can be packed by the user into notes on a computerBible.
Ralph W. Klein is Dean and professor of Old Testament at the Lutheran School ofTheology at Chicago.
More comments from our users
From a Pastor-Teacher-DoctorIm one of those peculiar folks who believe that the original Biblical languagesare critical to the work of Christian ministry... BibleWorks [is] head andshoulders above all others. Bar none... Save your pennies. Dont settle for acheap imitation. This is the program to beat. There is nothing even close toBibleWorks speed, flexibility, and simplicity of use. With this program, thedividing wall of hostility between you and the original language of scripture hasbeen broken down, whether you went to seminary or not. Whats amazing isthat this program is just as easy and useful for the student of scripture whowants to work only with the English [or German or French or Spanish or etc] as itis for the student who prefers the Hebrew text...Greek...Latin. Most Bible studysoftware is chocked full of [items] that actually take you *away* from the textitself. When pressed, most Bible study software is limited in its ability with thebiblical text. Not so with BibleWorks. The designers have kept the biblical textas this softwares priority.... BibleWorks has been engineered chiefly toempower your close reading (exegesis) of the text.
Rev. Richard Deibert, Pastor, M.D.
From a Pastor-Preacher-TeacherI want to thank you, first of all, for this marvelous product you have provided!...I am THOROUGHLY impressed... The truth is that I was reluctant to invest thiskind of money in such a computer program. After all, I thought, haventpreachers and teachers and pastors managed to do their jobs for centurieswithout this kind of technology? And didnt I already have on my shelves most ofthe books which roughly duplicated what I would find on this CD? But, no. Whatyou have put together is like nothing I have on my shelves. And while I suppose Icould do my job without this technology, it would be a relatively poorstewardship of time, given the advantages of this terrific program. Thank you!!
7 June 1997, Pastor David Kalas,United Methodist Church, Appleton, Wisconsin
From a Professor of Biblical StudiesSince receiving your product, I have [tested and reviewed many other Biblesoftware products] as well.....I must continue to say that I am still able to makeBibleWorks the top recommendation for Bible software to all my students.22 July 1998, Prof. Mark H. Soto, Grace College and Theological Seminary, Indiana
