The Last Supper “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Jesus wanted the men to be able to remember him by saying that the food was him, he wanted them to have a part of him with them. John the Baptist and SalomeBy: Hayley Huffman

• John the Baptist did not approve of the marriage between Herod Antipas and Herodias because Herodias was once married to Antipas’ half brother Philip. John was then sent to prison by Antipas, but Herodias wanted him killed. So when Salome, Herodias’ daughter with Philip, danced at Antipas’ birthday, he promised to give her whatever she asked for. Her mother told her to request John’s head on a platter.

• Ralph from The Lord of the Flies couldresemble John, because like John, Ralph didnot agree with Jack’s ways and wanted whathe felt was right, but was almost killed by Jacklike John was killed by Herodias.

Mary Magdalene

Judas Iscariot and 30 pieces of silver In the Gospel of Mathew, before the Last Super,

Judas Iscariot agreed to hand Jesus over to the chief priests for 30 silver coins. Afterwards, Judas returned the money and hung himself for what he had done.

Message: The phrase is often used to accuse people of selling out their ideals or beliefs. It is better to stay true to your friends than become a traitor.

A modern day example of this could be seen at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of 2009, where a spokesman criticized the document by saying "It looks like we are being offered 30 pieces of silver to betray our people and our future.”

DAVID AND BATHSHEBA

King David remains in Israel while his army is at war with the Kingdom of Ammon. On one evening, from his palace roof, he sees a woman bathing and considers her very beautiful. David learns that her name is Bathsheba, wife of Uriah the Hittite, a soldier in the army of Israel. King David then sleeps with Bathsheba, impregnating her.

In an attempt to hide the deed, David orders Uriah back to Jerusalem, but Uriah will not go home, insisting that it is not fair to his fellow soldiers who are still at war. Failing to conceal his adultery, David orders Joab, Uriah’s commander, to put Uriah on the front line in battle so he will be killed. This plan works, and Uriah is killed in battle. Soon after, David takes Bathsheba as his wife, and she bears for him one son.

Allusions in Literature

The story of David and Bathsheba is referenced in many stories involving adultery, notably in The Scarlet Letter:

“The walls were hung round with tapestry, said to be from the Gobelin looms, and, at all events, representing the Scriptural story of David and Bathsheba, and Nathan the Prophet, in colors still unfaded, but which made the fair woman of the scene almost as grimly picturesque as the woe-denouncing seer.” (154)

Summary:

King Ahab of Israel wants Naboth’s vineyard. When Naboth refuses to give it to Ahab, Jezebel, his wife, sends a letter to nobles claiming the need to kill Nobath. Nobath is killed and Ahab takes the vineyard until he and Jezebel are eventually condemned by the Lord and fed to dogs.

Abraham and Isaac

Fail Safe by Eugene Burdick & Harvey WheelerIn the chapter of the book entitled “The Choice of Abraham”, it tells of a pilot carrying out an attack in which he knows his son will die. However, he puts his son aside because he knows that if he goes through with it, it will result in saving more lives.

Allusion in Literature

Brief SummaryAbraham and his wife prayed for a son for years. Although they were very old, God promised them that He would grant them a child and Abraham would be a father of many nations. Later God tested Abraham and told him to take his only son, Isaac, to the region of Moriah and sacrifice him as a burnt offering. Abraham took Isaac and set off on the 50 mile journey. As they went up the mountain, Isaac asked his father where the lamb was for the sacrifice, and Abraham answered that the Lord would provide the lamb. Abraham then bound Isaac with ropes and placed him on the stone altar. As he raised the knife to slay his son, the angel of the Lord called out to Abraham to stop and not harm the boy. The angel said he knew that Abraham feared the Lord because he had not withheld his only son. Abraham then looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket and sacrificed the animal provided by the God. Because Abraham was going to sacrifice his son, the angel promised to make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky.

Crucifixion of Christ

Daniel and the Writing on the Wall

God wrote the message “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin” on the wall of King Belshazzar’s banquet hall after Belshazzar ordered the gold and silver cups

taken from the temple to be used at a party and his guest praised the idols of silver and gold. Belshazzar called his enchanters and astrologers to decipher

the message. None of them could read the message so at the king’s wife's suggestion, Daniel was called in to tell the messages meaning. Daniel told Belshazzar that the message said that the days of Belshazzar’s rule were

numbered and his kingdom would be divided. As Daniel foretold, Belshazzar was killed by Darius the Mede that very night.

The moral of the story is to remain humble and not praise other gods. Belshazzar disrespected God by using the cups of his temple for the party and then wrongly praised earthly idols

“The writing on the wall” is an idiom for imminent doom or demise

Birth Of ChristThe new world has began.

Luke 2: 16-18So they hurried off and found

Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this

child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

Joseph and His Coat

of Many Colors

Jacob loves Joseph best out of any of his sons, so he makes a many-colored coat for him. Joseph's eleven brothers become jealous. They grow to hate him, and their contempt for him becomes more volatile when Joseph shares dreams he has had in which, symbolically, his brothers bow down before him. One day, Jacob sends Joseph to his brothers, who are tending flock. As they see Joseph approaching, the brothers plot to murder him. One of them, Reuben, tries to stop them from harming him, allowing him to rescue Joseph later. However, the other brothers strip Joseph's coat from him and throw him in a well. Instead of leaving him there to die, they sell him to Ishmaelite traders going to Egypt. Reuben returns later to the well and finds it empty. The rest kill a goat and paint its blood on Joseph's robe. They deliver the robe to Jacob, who assumes his son has been killed by a wild animal. Jacob is inconsolable, and Joseph is sold to one of the Pharaoh's officials.

“Joseph's Coat,” Diego Vélazquez

Ray Bradbury alludes to this Biblical story in Fahrenheit 451 - “And we are out here, and the city is there, all wrapped up in its own coat of a thousand colors” (152).

Samson and DelilahSummary: Samson, the judge over Israel was in a relationship with Delilah who conspired with the Philistines to find the secret to Samson’s strength and put an end to his vengeance. Samson revealed that if he cut his hair he would lose his strength so Delilah had his hair cut in his sleep and he was captured and tortured by the Philistines. His hair grew and he prayed to God for the first time. During a Pagan ritual Samson called on God and knocked down two pillars, collapsing the temple he was being paraded in and killing himself and all of his enemies.

Message: God forgives and keeps faith in all once they profess their sins and admit their faith.

And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.” (Revelation 8:1-2)

Revelation 20:11-15 ESVThen I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Day of Judgment

Summary: After death

you see your judgment day

and, according to

what you have done in your life, you either go to Heaven or

Hell.

Example in Literature: InfernoIn this novel Dante is promised by Virgil to be taken to Heaven and instead leads him through

the gates of Hell.
