3 TRAVIS ROAD, BURRUM HEADS - FROM SATURDAY 7TH NOVEMBER(Continuing until Saturday 14 November or until sold out)

After more than 14 years in Burrum Heads, we are now leaving on our next lifestyle phase. Trying to

shoe-horn what we have accumulated in a 330 sqm home into a unit of one-third that size will require

some serious downsizing. We need your help.

Some items available - Ladders, plank, Kerrick water blaster, house cleaning gear, lawn mower,

Kawasaki brushcutter, BBQ setting for 6, four burner Turbo gas BBQ, tall antique timber & glass display

cabinet, antique Dexter rocker, Horn sewing table, Kirby heavy duty vacuum cleaner, power tools, hand

tools, garden tools, home brewing kit incl. bottle drying racks and bottles (empty).

Also a large wine storage rack, crockery, kitchen equipment, linen, clothing, computer magazines potted

plants and the usual bric-a-brac.

The North Winds have certainly been persistent this

year, postponing more charter trips. We did manage

to get the "Night Beat" trip out of Tin Can Bay

completed successfully, with a good mixed bag

being landed. Tassie landed the biggest with an

8.5kg snapper and a 5.4kg Maori Cod. Ron

Underwood's catch included a 4kg snapper and a

3.4kg Maori Cod. I heard talk of much bigger and

better fish, but you have to land them or photograph

them to get in this newsletter. Good to see a few

members venture out to the twelve mile in their

runabouts on the rare calm days. John Winterburn

was rewarded for his efforts and weighed in a nice

16.2kg Spanish Mackerel.

The "KJ" has been postponed to the 24th October,

and the "Coastwide" is booked for the 21st 22nd

November. Trip Captain Paul has booked nine

charters for 2010 and the list is posted on the notice

board. All but one of these are weekend charters, and

the "Venus 11" trip to Lady Musgrave Island on

25/26/27th June is designated for couples.

We have issued a challenge to the Amateur Fishing

Club to defend the "Guzzunder Cup". As it's their

turn to cook the BBQ, (they set the rules) we do the

weigh in. Sounds fair to me. Event to coincide with

Amateur's third week comp on13/14/15th November

with BBQ and weigh in on the Sunday. More details

next meeting.

George Dart outlined measures being taken to "iron

out" stumbling blocks to new boat ramp progress.

Meeting commended George and Bill Cardiff for

their perseverance and persistence in what has been a

long campaign.

Christmas Party is booked for Sunday 6th December

at The Burrum Heads Hotel (Picnic Area out back).

11am General Meeting. 12.30pm Sit down Roast

Dinner in the dining room.

We welcome new members:- Luke Dickens, Thomas

and Kaye McInerney, Tony and Winnie Paterson.

Next Meeting 1st November 2009.

Thanks to Alf and Rhonda for hosting this months

BBQ. We do appreciate your hospitality, considering

the circumstances. Next months BBQ will be at Lex

and Susy Tomlin's at 16 Louise Dr.Burrum Heads.

Until next month,Safe Boating,

Peter McKenzie

“Running On Empty”

Most of us who drive have, at some time,

experienced the horrible feeling of seeing the needle

on the fuel gauge pointing to “empty” with no spare

fuel and no service station close to hand – Not a

happy situation.

Frequently, urgent things take our attention off the

important things. With a car, fuel, oil and water are

important things which, if neglected, could be the

cause of real trouble, not to mention considerable

expense.

Spiritual emptiness can result when we allow urgent

things to side-track us from the important things like

prayer (our communication with God), reading God’s

word (our spiritual food and drink), and worship (our

adoration, praise and thanksgiving to God), causing

us to “run out of gas.”

Jesus said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me

and drink.” (John 3.37).

“Let him that is athirst come: and who so ever will,

let him take of the water of life freely” (Rev. 22-17).

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after

righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matt 5-6).

With such a wonderful offer, why continue to run on

empty? Pastor Geoff

BURRUM HEADS OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUBThis has been a big month for the club, both

financially and equipment wise. Solid community

support, and a well presented submission from our

Fund Raising Officer Peter Bray, has resulted in

our receiving a grant for $30,000 from the

Gambling Community Benefit Fund to purchase

two new Six Man Canoes. We see this not only as a

great boost for our club, but also for the community

as a whole. In addition, we have received further

community support by way of two generous

donations to purchase three paddles for our juniors.

We thank the Burrum Heads Amateur Fishing Club

for their $500 donation, and "Tassie Tradie" Paul

Lethborg for his $250 donation. We have ordered

six paddles and have sought quotes for two

"Mirage" OC6 Canoes. Our own fundraisers for the

month by way of an ad hock Sausage Sizzle at

Mooloolaba, and a Garage Sale have netted us

$1000. We are pleased with our fund raising to

date, but still have a shortfall in upgrading

equipment, so will continue our efforts.

During the month Peter and Julie Bray competed in

the SQ Zone OC1/OC2 Series race at Mooloolaba

and came third in the 8klm mixed OC2 event under

borderline ocean conditions. Well done Peter and

Julie. Other races were cancelled due to dangerous

conditions.

On the river you may have noticed the increased

canoe traffic. Last Sunday we had a record number

of paddlers on the water over two sessions. Sixteen

senior members and prospective members in one

session, and twenty-one juniors in another. Better

than sitting at home reading the Sunday paper! If

you would like to try outrigging: - Sundays

8am.Call 41295635, or 41295226 for more details.

Junior Outriggers: - Saturdays 8.30am,

Wednesdays 4.15pm. Contact Julie Bray 41295711

for more information.

The long awaited Gubba Gubba Regatta at

Mooloolaba is the highlight of Australia's junior

Outrigging Calendar. Our contingent of 14 juniors

enjoyed the magnificent spectacle of two days of

well organised friendly competitive paddling.

Paddlers represented clubs from Cronulla to

Cairns, and a New Zealand Maori contingent gave an

international flavour to the event.

We didn't win a lot of races, but we were well placed

in most events contested, and gained valuable regatta

experience...brought home some beautifully carved

coconut shell Gubbi Gubbi medals...and had fun. Just

a few highlights from the almost non stop races over

two days:-

Even on Lake Kawana the gusty SW winds made

start line ups tricky, and Katie Bray did well to steer

the under12's and under14's OC6 teams into clear

water and avoid the congestion. Rebecca Bray joined

a combined Burrum, Mooloolaba, and New Zealand

OC6 team to take second in the finals of the U19's

1000mtr Sprint. Mackenzie and Cooper Bolland

joined forces with some formidable Kiwis to win

third place medals in the finals of both U12 OC6

250mtr Sprints and the 2klm Marathon, in their first

ever outrigger races. Well done boys.

In the OC1 events for many of our juniors, it was

their first solo races, but they performed like

veterans, and weren't too far behind at the finish.

Look out next year! Notable solo performances saw

Harry Creed take second in his heat of the U12 boys

250mtr Sprint. Jayden Kennedy took third in his heat

and made the finals (based on best times) and was

fourth in the final. Zali Potts had a great race to take

third in her heat of the U12 Girls 250mtr sprint in a

close finish for second (my photo shows her in

second, but I was biased). Grace Riley won her heat

of the U12 girl’s 250mtr sprint, and came second in

the final against strong opponents.

All of our juniors performed well, gained valuable

experience in a friendly competitive setting, made

lots of new friends, and will have many lasting

memories of their first Gubbi Gubbi experience.

STOP PRESS:-Grace Riley won her age division over

two kilometres at the Noosa race of the South

Queensland OC1/OC2 series this weekend. With two

wins from three starts and with one race to go she is

well placed to take out the series. Peter and Julie

Bray also did well to score another third in the eight

kilometres mixed OC2 race in the same series. Well

done our competitive paddlers.

Our band of volunteer fire-fighters have attended

fires both large and small, on our fireground and

beyond during the past couple of months. The long

range weather forecasts are continuing to appear very

problematical indeed, and given the predicted

weather patterns, our town's volunteers and those

from our neighbouring brigades will have a very busy

time of it right through into the new year.

A number of our members have again been willing to

nominate for listing on the deployment register,

which could see them join a Strike Team and be sent

anywhere within Queensland or beyond at relatively

short notice. And It works both ways, because those

interstate comunities that we have assisted may very

likely one day return the favour.

Please be aware that Total Fire Bans can be invoked

at very short notice and withdrawn at very short

notice. To be sure of the current fire ban status for

your Local Government Region, QFRS have provided

a 24hour Fire Ban register that can be reached on a

freecall to 1800 020 440.

FRIENDSHIP GROUP NEWS

The October meeting of the BH Friendship Group

was held on Thursday 1st October. Lyn Mc and

Lyn B provided lots of tasty goodies for afternoon

tea, which was thoroughly enjoyed. Barbara T

and Glenva supplied the raffle prize and this was

won by our newest member, Anne.

Anne also kept the ladies interested with her

knowledge of natural therapies with some of the

ladies offering to be ‘guinea pigs’ for acupuncture

and massage. The ladies appreciated the

experience of the healing qualities of natural

therapies.

Our next get-together will be held on Thursday 5th

November at 2.30pm in the Burrum Heads

Community Hall. Anita and Sue are our volunteer

caterers and raffle donors for the afternoon. Anyone

who is unable to attend, please phone Eadith

(41295516) by Monday 2nd November.

Admission is $4.50 to cover cost of the afternoon

tea and the hall hire.

New members and visitors are always welcome.

No stress – just turn up for a cuppa and a chat on

Thursday 5th November at 2.30pm!

UP-STYLE FOR

FORMAL NIGHT

The grandchildren came

up for a visit so I had to

dust off the boat and

motor, and with the

weather being so hot

and windy we chose to

go out late in the afternoons to try and catch a feed

of fish. The wind seems to drop off a bit late

afternoon and it is more pleasant without getting

sun burnt. The tide was three-quarters in and there

were plenty of bait fish skipping about. We caught

herring anchored off the black bank and settled in

for some fishing. A successful night when we

came home with a nice lizard, a cod, a yellow

finned bream and a pikey bream. Unfortunately it

was 3 days before the fishing competition and

when we went back for the next 2 nights we did

not catch a scale. The boys went home without

having any weigh-ins for the fishing competition.

The good oil from Darryl from Burrum Traders is

that there are still plenty of large lizards being caught

off the boat ramps; mackerel are hanging around the

mouth and should be moving into the river systems

in the following weeks as the weather warms up. It

might be worth a try in the gutter running along the

Burrum north point towards Woodgate. Large

summer whiting are being landed off sand bars up

the Isis and up the Gregory river near the power line.

The club’s fishing competition was held from Friday

3rd September to Sunday 4th. Biggest bag men's

was taken out by Don Mc Neil with a mixed bag

containing a big 2 hand around whiting and flathead.

The biggest bag ladies went to his wife Beryl with a

mixed bag containing a nice whiting, bream, flathead

and a pike. Leanne Coleman was rewarded with a

prize in the secret weight.

Brad Dyson, a new member, also won with a

nice bream of 846grams. The surprise draw went

to Paul D'Cesare with a pikey bream. Junior

biggest bag was taken out by Bradley Dyson for

a flounder.

I hear there was a near divorce in our ranks a few

weeks ago when one of our male members was in

charge of the landing net and dropped not 1 but 2

good fish when his wife was bringing them up to

the boat, they were not eating fish but some one

had cold shoulder.

Paul& Leanne, Don& Beryl and Jack & Helen

showed the flag at the Lake Monduran away fresh

water impoundments competition on 10 & 11

October, but the bass and barra did not come to

the party. A good time was had by all with 4 out

of 6 winning prizes in the draws.

Anyone wishing to become members of our club

please join us at Lions Park on 15 November around

4.30 pm or alternatively ring the secretary Trevor

Lock on 4129 5101. Our club has a sustainable fish

limit on our competitions with members only being

able to weigh in one of each species.

Good fishing but remember, " limit your catch not

catch your limit." JAK

It was great to visit the Friends of

Cheelii at the recent Working

Bee. I even felt well enough to

help collect some of the Rhodes

grass that had been removed. Not

many volunteers were able to

come but Stephanie, Ellen’s

granddaughter, lent a hand.

Chris MacCarthy from Fraser Coast Regional

Council also called in to offer encouragement and

bring more weed bags as well as mark the spot for

the ‘Land for Wildlife’ sign. This means that the

reserve is now listed as an important area for

conservation. Aren’t we lucky to have this place

which is habitat for a rare plant right on our

doorstep. By the way, don’t forget that Council,

State and Federal regulations apply.

Because the reserve is public land, clearing

vegetation needs Council approval; even the Friends

of Cheelii CANNOT remove native plants without

Council approval. We will be talking to the “powers

that be” about thinning out some of the wattles in

the revegetation area closest to Ivor Curl Drive. Our

efforts to reduce exotic grasses in this area have

certainly paid off. Only a small amount of Natal and

Rhodes grass remains and the Mossman Burr grass

is gone (we hope). Of course, when it finally rains

some seeds may germinate so more weeding will be

needed.

Our next Working Bee will be held on Wednesday

October 28, starting at 8.00am.

We’d love to see you for a chat and a cuppa if you

want to know more about this project.

INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENTACADEMY - BURRUM HEADS

Thurdsay 1st of October: Lars Olsen journeyed

out to the Burrum Heads Community Hall

training dojo for the Kids Helping Kids Day

certificate presentations. Lars provided us with an

excellent insight into the ForgetMeNot Children’s

Home which is a very uplifting story of

compassion, courage, perseverance and love.

There has been a video clip from this event

uploaded into the internet "YouTube" site if

anyone is interested www.youtube.com/user/

IntegratedAcademy

The event leading up to this presentation was the

2009 Kids Helping Kids Day which occurred at

the Scarness foreshore on Saturday the 26th of

September. This was an event that our Academy

is invited to every year and it is always a great

opportunity to unite together as a team towards

another important goal. This year we provided a

30 minute training workshop and also a 20

minute Martial Arts & Self Development

demonstration for all those in attendance. Our

team consisted of 15 students who all not only

performed well during the demonstration but also

through their participation demonstrated a personal

decision to share kindness and generosity with the

community. Our efforts helped the ForgetMeNot

Children’s home generate an abundant total of

over $7000 that will be directed into the building

of their new orphanage in Nepal.

* Notice to all previous students and family

members of the Integrated Martial Arts/

Development Academy -31st of October: We are

having our 7th year Anniversary Celebration since

the birth of the Integrated Academy in Burrum

Heads. All Academy members (past and present)

are invited to a BBQ and slide-show presentation

at the Burrum Heads Community Hall scheduled

for the Saturday afternoon.

How do you feel?'

Slim says, 'I feel just like a newborn baby.'

'Really!? Like a newborn baby!?'

'Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants.'

Obituary of the late Mr Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No

one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

• knowing when to come in out of the rain;

• why the early bird gets the worm;

• life isn't always fair; and

• maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial principles (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable

strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school

for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his

condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do

in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin

to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment

than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the

burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was

hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter,

Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now,

Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If

not, join the majority and do nothing.
