NEW DELHI, Jan 9:

The Directorate of RevenueIntelligence today claimed to havebusted an international hawalaracket after arresting two people,including a woman Jet Airwaysemployee who was allegedly try-ing to smuggle out foreign curren-cy worth over Rs 3 crore.

The DRI officials intercept-ed the Jet Airways flight atten-dant when she had boarded aplane that was scheduled to takeoff for Hong Kong yesterday,the agency said in a statement.

"During examination of herchecked in and hand baggage,USD 4,80,200 wrapped in alu-minium foil having a marketvalue of Rs 3.25 crore, has beenrecovered," it said.

During interrogation, it cameto light that the woman was part ofa major international hawala syn-dicate and has carried foreign cur-rencies several times for a Delhi-based hawala operator, who wasalso arrested from here, it said.

The employee was identifiedas Deveshi Kulshrestha and thealleged hawala operator as AmitMalhotra, a resident of VivekVihar area in Delhi, a seniorDRI official said.

He said Malhotra used crewmembers for smuggling foreigncurrency.

The official claimed thatMalhotra would collect moneyfrom some bullion dealers inDelhi and send it to select for-eign destinations using a flightattendant.

The money was being usedfor purchasing gold abroad andlater sent to India illegally, theofficial said.

Both Kulshrestha andMalhotra were produced beforea designated court whichremanded them to two days ofjudicial custody. They will beproduced before a MetropolitanMagistrate on January 11.

Malhotra had befriended JetAirways crew six months agoduring a flight to India, he said.

The DRI has recovered Rs3.3 lakh in cash, and foreigncurrencies of different countriesworth USD 2,500, besides sev-

eral incriminating materialsfrom Malhtora, the official said.
