10.4 SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT

UNIT I

Disaster management: objective, basic concepts, classification, disaster process,

spectrum of disaster management, disaster management in India. Organization for

medical relief, principles of mass, casualty management, hospital disaster plan, need,

objective and purpose. Disaster response, alert and recall, disaster manual, disaster

drill.

UNIT II

Fire hazards: Elements of fire, cause of hospital fires, building services, electric

installation, special hazards, hazards associated with furnishing material- curtains,

upholstery, dresses, bedding materials. Water points - fire points, escape routes, fuel

store, Manual Call Points, means of escape. Personal risks – needle stick injury,

glass/sharp injury.

UNIT III

Radiation hazards: Biological effects of radiation hazards, radiator protection and

safety, layout of x-ray room, preventive measures against magnetic field hazards,

radiation protection aspects, facility planning and procedure, procedure for obtaining

clearance, radiation therapy.

UNIT IV

Security organisation and management: Threats and vulnerabilities of hospitals, threat

Groups, security sensitive areas, role of hospital security, non-traditional “service”

function, staff complement, perimeter protection system, implementing physical

controls - security technology, computer and information security - contract security

agency, verification and training.

UNIT V

Security and law: Authority to arrest, reporting procedure, central security control

room, patrols and posts, control of visitors, OPD patients/visitors, standing

instructions for security of cash, security budgeting, committee, audit, security related

crisis, bomb threat, responses.
