Notes - Akshaya Patra means an ''Inexhaustible vessel' from whichunlimited food can be drawn.

Facts & Numbers

Every year, 2.5 million children die in India, accounting for one in fivedeaths in the world. More than half of these deaths could be prevented

if children were well nourished. India's progress in reducing child

malnutrition is very slow.

The proven path to helping the poor, is by educating them. Providing

food works as an important factor that encourages education; this inturn enables overall development transforming lives and communities.

A hungry child cannot be expected to have an urge for education. Weprovide nutritious meals to about 1 million children - with a vision to

encourage education amongst the poor.

Law for ActionMany impoverished children performed poorly in school due to short

attention spans associated with extreme hunger. Other children either

did not enroll in school, or dropped out at a young age choosing to

seek work during the school day to earn money to feed themselves andtheir families.

Earlier, school meals was irregular and in many places non-existent.

Responding to pressure from the people, the Supreme Court of India

passed an order on November 28, 2001 which mandated: "Cooked

midday meal is to be provided in all the government and government-aided primary schools in all the states."

Akshaya patra partakes this responsibility.

MERITORIOUS BLIND STUDENTS by providing financialAssistance in addition to (a) Tape Recorders, (b) Detecting Walking

Due to pressure created by the section of Blind Students Trust

formulated a Project/scheme under the Title "Literacy Mission forBlind & awareness of Educational Support". Under this scheme Trust

will take care of the services of Blind Student by providing

Scholarships / financial Assistance , Tape Reorders, Brail watches,Brail literature in the form of cassettes, computers, food to needy,

medicines, kits, uniforms and other social welfare activities for the

visually impaired students. The Trust has started to awardSCHOLARSHIPS to BLIND STUDENTS not only during 2004-2005

but also during 2005-2006 & 2006-07,2007-08,2008-09. So far the

Trust has awarded 141 visually impaired Students of both Rural Urban

areas.

A Scholarship Distribution Committee will be formed every Year

Under the Chairmanship of an Retired Accounts Officer preferably

from Accountant General's Office (Central Government) & he/she willbe assisted by the Members from Donors coming under Category A &

B. The decision taken by this committee will be final. The details how

Blind Students are benefited so far from the Trust are as follows:
