FROM THE DIRECTOR

Winter is a wonderful time for reading. Few things are as comforting as staying inside on a cold day with a hot drink and a good book. With fewer outdoor activities, winter is also a great time for families to read together. And when we want to get out of the house, the library is a terrific place to visit. No other place offers such a variety of educational, cultural, and recreational programs. And all of the library's programs are free! At JMRL, the Friends of the Library generously support all the programs and events.

In March, JMRL will be presenting its 10th Annual Big Read. The month-long series of events will encourage local residents to read The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. The book is generally considered one of the best English-language novels of the 20th Century. The Big Read is a nation-wide program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and is designed to broaden our understanding of the world by encouraging the reading and discussion of thought-provoking books. JMRL has been participating in the program since its national launch in 2007. In addition to funding from the NEA, JMRL's Big Read events are supported by the Friends of the Library Endowment--Art & Jane Hess Fund.

I hope you will visit the library this winter and that you will find time for reading. And, remember, the library offers many programs and services "Beyond the Books."

SPRING NEWS

THE BIG READ XThe Big Read returns to JMRL for the tenth consecutive year in March 2016. Everyone in the community is encouraged to read and discuss The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers throughout the month. JMRL will host many free programs and discussions about the book, exploring themes such as Southern Gothic literature, mental illness, and deaf culture. Stop by your local library branch to pick up a Big Read brochure, or visit jmrl.org/bigread to see all of this year’s programs.

What’s the book about? A teenage outcast, a drunken socialist, a black doctor, and a sad cafe owner confess their secrets to a deaf mute, in Carson McCullers’s dramatic story of poverty and racism in a 1930s Georgia mill town.

Be on the lookout for this logo throughout Beyond the Books for events related to the 2016 Big Read.

Find and Sign: A BIG READ Scavenger HuntThroughout the month of MarchSearch the library for signs. Not street signs or store signs but American Sign Language signs. We are highlighting deaf culture and communication as part of the Big Read. Find all the signs in your local JMRL branch, try them with a librarian (if you like) and then earn a prize!

Snuggle With a Book: Winter Reading ProgramFebruary 2 - March 2Read to your child every day from February 2 to March 2 and participate with an early literacy activity sheet that you can pick up at any JMRL branch library during the month. When completed, return the activity sheet to the library for a prize. For children up to age 5.

Poem in Your Pocket DayThursday, April 21Stop by your local library branch and pick out a gift-wrapped poem to carry in your pocket. Unwrap it and read it to yourself, share with someone close, or just tuck it in your pocket for a rainy day. For all ages.

Once again, the library is partnering with Atlas Comics by handing out free comics.

Stop by to see what's available -- while supplies last.
