RESEARCH GOALSDiscover how others create and maintain their playlists and music libraries.

HYPOTHESISUsers have disjointed music libraries, and want a way to streamline and have more control over their music playing.

USER INTERVIEWSFour user interviews conducted in person in San Francisco and Oakland, lasting an average of 20 minutes each.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Spotify is the market leader in music streaming. On-demand and ad-free listening for premium subscribers. Otherwise, always playing Home Depot ads. Difficult to find “Saved” / Library tracks. Sync with iTunes is buggy.

Google Play music has a great selection of prebuilt mood radio stations. Can’t seek backwards. You can build your own playlists, otherwise no control over what’s next.

Pandora is good if you already know what you want to hear. No control other than “like” and “dislike.” User depends on algorithm to find new music.

Hear more obscure or experimental music sometimes, when user chooses. Other times, listen to more popular / rising.

▹ Test whether left or right “listen” icon makes most sense

▹ Create additional filters for decade / freshness

▹ Provide more than EQ adjustments (BPM, key… how does that affect mood?)

▹ Test how easily users can identify their favorite genres and sub-genres
