LEADERS LETTERKnowing Jesus and Making Him Known.

"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pas-

tors and teachers, to equip his peoplefor works of service, so that the body ofChrist may be built up in the knowledgeof the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of thefullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by everywind of teaching and by the cunningand craftiness of people in their deceit-ful scheming. Instead, speaking thetruth in love, we will grow to become inevery respect the mature body of himwho is the head, that is, Christ. Fromhim the whole body, joined and heldtogether by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, aseach part does its work."

Ephesians 4 verses 11-16The past year at Beverley BaptistChurch has been a tumultuous onewith many changes; a new Leader-ship Team, members leaving, mem-bers arriving, baptisms, and thesearch for a new Minster commenc-ing. However we have grown and ma-tured as a fellowship and sought tomake Jesus known as well as comingto know him better. There are manyexciting things contained within thisannual report which show how as afellowship we seek to become an em-bodiment of Christ. This report contains the informationproduced by those people who helplead small groups, outreach projects, prayers and projects, and the minis-

tries within the Church - all comprisethe body of our church and the sup-porting ligaments that allow us togrow and build, without all of usworking together (and with other

churches) we cannot hope to growin God.The Leadership Team has changedover this year: in May, Chris Peachand Phil Laver joined the team (Tim

Jenkins and Stephen Newton) andPete Hammond and Glynn Jonesstepped down. In October AdamSpratt, Andy Lawley and John Sykes

joined the Leadership Team andTim subsequently left to take up hisnew post as Minister at Park RoadBaptist Church in Peterborough inNovember;and Phil Laver moved tothe Shetlands at the end of 2013.Whilst some people have left ourfellowship we have seen them moveon to serve God in different ways inother places. Our numbers have

grown on Sunday mornings and wewere delighted this year to welcomeinto membership Ella Nicholson,David and Steph Tongeman, NaomiPeach, Chris Mason and Sally De-lanoy. We were also blessed in Sep-tember with the baptism of AlisonBarker, Sally Delanoy, Naomi Peach,Chris Mason, and Emily Mason. May

they all continue to grow in confi-dence as they journey with the Lordand experience joy in His serviceover the coming years.

The past year has been exciting andrewarding for us and I am sure thatthe upcoming year will hold morechallenges as we hope to appoint anew minister and continue to be-come mature, attaining to the whole measure ofthe fullness of Christ.Chris Peach

MENS GROUPThere have been significant changesto the Older Mens groups duringthe past year. Stalwarts Alan, Edand Tim have moved away andsubsequently we have changed theformat slightly. Whilst previously

seven of us met every Saturday forbreakfast and Bible study at 7.30,we now meet on a monthly basis still with breakfast, Bible baseddiscussion and communion. Theslightly later time of 8.00 has meantthat several new older men have

joined the group so we are currentlystill seven and we meet at the homeof Wilf Fowler who has a gift of

    making an awesome breakfast!

Although the focus has been, andremains, on deepening ourrelationship with God, we havealways sought to offer one anothersupport and encouragement inevery aspect of our lives. During thepast year we used two challengingbooks to help us: So You Dont

Want To Go To Church Anymore?by Jake Colson which challengedour thinking about what church isand why we are part of body ofChrist in this wayand how we cancontribute more effectively; andsecondly Risk Takers by MalcomDuncan which uses Pauls letters tohelp stimulate our thinking about

avoiding complacency in our faithand Christian life. More recentlyWilf led us in some meditations onlent and Easter.

It has been a real encouragement toexperience God at work in our lives[in particular with serious healthissues, moving and, especially withTim in his seeking a ministerialposition]. God does not want us [orindeed, allow us] to become

stagnant, and we are lookingforward to the new relationshipsthat we are building in the groupand the exciting future that God isopening up for each of us. Any menwho would like to join with us willbe made most welcome you doNOT have to be older, merelyavailable on a Saturday morning

each month and willing to eatbreakfast and share together![Contact Tom Danter or PeterWilliams for details]

THE GATHERING XIIISome of the men of the church of allages, enjoyed a fun-packed,testosterone-rich weekend inSwindon in

June. The Gathering, a mensweekend organised by ChristianVision for Men provided worship, teaching, darts competitions, testimonies, vehicles, boxing rings, challenges, banter, barbequing, adeepening of faith and around 70men coming to faith.

    PPP: Power of thePraying Parent

We are a growing group of ladiesthat meet on alternate Thursdayevenings for chat, prayer and biblestudy. It has been lovely towelcome some new members to thegroup this year.

We have recently completed a seriescalled Boundaries with Kidswhich encouraged us in ourparenting. We have just started ona book called Unlocking the door evangelism in the real world. Thisbook is written by the leaders of anevangelism organisation called

Activate Your Life. As a groupand along with some other ladies inthe church we enjoyed a weekendaway at the Activate your Lifea n n u a l c o n f e r e n c e i nNorthamptonshire during March ofthis year. We hope to go again nextyear, not only for the great teachingand worshipbut also for the lovelyfood and spa facilities (ssh dont

    tell the men!).

We enjoy growing in ourrelationships with God and each

other as we experience the joy andchallenges of life together. If youwould like to join us, please speak toa member of the group: JuliaPeplow, Ruth Newton, Mina Heng,Emma Spratt, Sarah Harman, JoStubbs and Tracy Pike.

    CHRISTIANITYEXPLORED

In January 2014, we began toresearch the options for a course toencourage and help develop newChristians and those who may not

yet have come to faith. The 7 weekcourse entitled ChristianityExplored, developed over manyyears as part of the ministry of AllSouls, Langham Place in London, was chosen because it essentiallyrequired a commitment forattendees of only 7 weeks. Thecourse is based around Marks

Gospel and consists of 7 groupmeetings which include times ofreading and discussion of passagesfrom Mark and a brief DVDpresentation by Rico Tice. In fact, aswell as the 7 weekly meetings, thecourse also includes a Day Awaytowards the end of the course, which provides time for almost 3more sessions!

While the suggested format includessharing a meal together on eachoccasion, it was felt that familycommitments would make thisdifficult for some course members,se we initiated our course on 16April with an informal meal forpotential course members, whichwas attended by 8 people, as well asthe course leaders. The course itselfcommenced a couple of weeks later, with a slightly different subset of 7course members, with at least one

    6/16

other planning to come forsubsequent sessions. Some of theseare simply friends who have beeninvited to come along by a churchmember.

When the course is completed and

after a post-course evaluation, it ishoped to be able to offer it again toothers in the church and on thefringes of the church during theautumn.

    INTERACTIVE

    GROUPInteractive has continued this year,

following a break through thesummer term due to the demands ofrevision and exams. We re-startedin September and continuedthrough to Easter, with anothersummer term break planned.

This academic year we have usedScripture Union material to supporttwo seriesone on Colossians titledNew Life, and another looking at theAuthentic Jesus.

Numbers in Interactive havedwindled this year to a core of threebut, there will be some newmembers joining in the autumn as

they outgrow the HD SundaySchool group.

My vision for Interactive is that it isrelevant to young people dealingwith real life issues and stretchingthe Bible knowledge andunderstanding of who God is andhow he relates to life.

My thanks go to my helpers this

year Ali Laver, Alison Barker andSteph Tongeman.

    Group leader - Andy Lawley

MINISTER SEARCHIn autumn 2013, we agreed as achurch that the time had come toexplore the possibility of appointinga new minister. A Profile of thechurch was produced summarisingthe life and activity of BeverleyBaptist Church, ready to share withany prospective candidates, and a

Job Description was written andagreed by the church. A SearchTeam consisting of 5 members ofthe church together with theLeadership Team was appointed atthe turn of the year to provide the

man/woman-power to workthrough the practical mattersinvolved in finding an appropriatecandidate(s).

To date, the team have researchedopportunities for advertising thepost in the Christian press and haveprepared a draft advert but havenot yet placed the advert. We also

signed up to receive details ofpotential candidates through the BU

Settlement Scheme. The teamreceived details of 4 potentialcandidates via the BU scheme inmid-March and have had an initialmeeting with one of these. The team

are hoping to meet this candidateagain shortly before deciding

whether it would be appropriate toinvite this person to come to meetwith a wider cross-section of thechurch.

    OPEN DOOR

Open Door Open Door will havebeen running for 8 years this May.We meet on the second Wednesdayof each month in the afternoon atthe Cherry Tree Centre. Our aim isto provide a friendly meeting placein the community where anyone iswelcomed and they can relax andenjoy a time of fun, fellowship andfree refreshment. We try to providea range of interesting meetings-such as Tales of a missionarydaughter and Tactile books for thevisually impaired , - plus outings togarden centres and celebrations ofmembers birthdays. We open eachmeeting with a prayer and try toshow Gods love by listening andcaring for each other.

Although fronted by Clive and Kath,it is a real team effort. We relyheavily on a very loyal group ofhelpers , We are very grateful fortheir constant support.

We greatly miss our dear friendMenina who was one of our originalmembers

and always made such a valuablecontribution to our group.

Please let us know. if there isanyone who may benefit from

    joining us.

    Kath & Clive Richardson.

    FISH AND ANCHORCAFE

Fish is a holiday club for childrenaged 4 8 years run by church

families to welcome families fromthe wider community. We

generally have about a dozenchildren at each session, along withtheir parents, who can relax in theAnchor Cafe. For our summer andautumn sessions last year, wefollowed a series about differentpeople in the Bible. Our New Year,Half Term and Easter holidaysessions fitted in with the season.

We enjoy fun, games, craft andsinging all with a biblical theme, made accessible to those without achurch background.

Fish has lost a few more of ourleaders this year which is making itincreasingly difficult to find enoughleaders for our sessions. It will be

particularly difficult over thesummer period, when the peopleinvolved will be going away onfamily holidays. Therefore, weurgently need more people that arewilling to work directly with the 4 8 year old children, if we are tocontinue to run a session eachFriday during school holidays. Ifyou can help, please speak to JuliaPeplow. Thank you.

FRESHThe last event was held inDecember, "Carols at Costa". Due tothe moving on of Pete Hammond &Clare Nelson, Ali Laver and the

imminent move for Glynn & MonicaJones no events are planned for theimmediate future. But we are stillhoping to have "Carols at Costa"

EASTER SO WHAT?As a follow up to the Passion Playthis year we arranged a follow upevent at Costa (In the Style of Fresh)for the following Sunday (27thApril). The event sought to give an

opportunity for people to "Grill aChristian" - not literally of course! We were lucky enough to have PaulGreenin (BBC), Trevor Green (NewHarvest), and Richard Bradbury(Beverley Community Church)answer all the tricky questionsranging from 'Is Yoga sinful?' to'How do I find my faith?'. It was an

enlightening evening enjoyed by all!Chris Peach

MAY DAY WALKJackie and Philip Wright providedus with an outstanding 2 hourgentle walk in the Raywell area; afun (if taxing) quiz that Katie andSophie Peplow shone at, and plentyof wildlife to admire and dodge. Totop it off we had perfect sunny, nottoo warm, weather and a lovely

grassy bank to sit and finish theouting with a picnic and more chat.

    CHRISTMAS FAMILYFUN EVENT

Beverley Baptist Church decided todo Christmas differently in 2013 byhiring the services of Andy

Kind, the professional Christiancomedian from Manchester. Hostedby Glynn and Monica, Andy

entertained BBC members andvisitors alike with his wit, hisobservations and many a humorous

anecdote. The event was wellattended, the festive baguettes wereenjoyed and the camaraderie

appreciated when Andy took to thestage.

People 2013The face of Beverley Baptist Church isever changing and 2013 saw anumber of people join us and someleave us. Its refreshing to know thatthose who moved on and othersabout to have chosen to do so forgood reasons, many to be closer tofamily. Over the past months mywork has taken me away from hometoo. Instead of staring at the fourwalls of a hotel bedroom Ive beenout-and-about meeting some of thosefolks.

Tim and Janet Have settled intotheir new home in Peterborough andTim into his role as Minister at ParkRoad Baptist in the town centre.Tims enjoying his work he isgradually introducing change where

necessary and making good contactsacross the town. Janet is nowemployed as an administrator in alocal school, similar to what she didat St Nicholas Primary School andRebeccas boyfriend, Richard, alsoworking in Peterborough, is stayingwith earning his keep as cook!

    Phil and Ali

The Lavers moved back to wind-swept Shetland where they arenormally based. Since Easter theyhave been in Aberdeen on themainland to be sure of round-the-

clock care needed for Ali to give birthto their second child. Cora Elizabethwas born on Monday 5 May,weighing in at 9lb 11oz (plus 1/4).

Praise God, all are well and theirhouse in Beverley sold and the new

owners moved in the week before.

Simon Barnes Some of us willremember Simon who moved toNorwich to work in a church afterqualifying at LST. Simon met hiswife Jenny in Norwich. Both areactive in the church althoughSimons contract has finished andhe works temporarily in the sciencedepartment of a local school whilstthey plan their next step, working asMissionaries in Southern Spain.

Douglas Hamilton Many wontremember Douglas he was one ofour first Oasis youth workers in

2004/2005. Katherine was assignedto BBC and Douglas spent most ofhis time with St Nicholass church.

Youmay remember him as anincredibly tall and Godly man withthe proportions of Samson. Iremember him as my cleaner, handyman, the guy who unwittinglycycled across Leconfield Army

barracks on my bike and the sameguy who put milk through mycoffee machine! Douglas marriedEsther, a primary school teacher, three years ago and he is apoliceman in the MetropolitanConstabulary and recently movedfrom Watford (very near Adrianand Sue) to Kings Langley (outside

    the M25).

Adrian Smith We see Adrianand Sue from time to time and both

Theology to start at Oasis inSeptember.

Pete and Clare moved to NorthYorkshire in December and, aftermany twists and turns, finally tookpossession of an old house inMarch. The house has a great dealof character including woodworm.

They have a challenge ahead ofthem which they relish. Pete iscontinuing in his field of projectmanagement whilst Clare isenjoying her time working withCompassion in the Harrogate office.

Andy Guilder went off toHertfordshire College to complete a

PGCE Course.. He has successfullysecured a teaching job atChambersbury Primary School inHemel Hempstead. This is wherehis heart is both in work andamongst his family and friends inthe strong church connections hehas there. Well done Andy keepflying the flag of Jesus.

Ed and Ali Tomlinson movedto Dronfield near Sheffield (Alisonshome town) to be near theirgrandchildren and wider family Theplan to both be semi retired soonchanged and Ed has returned to fulltime employment whilst Alison gets

on with the more important stufflike planning her second daughterswedding, looking after her twodelightful grandchildren and

developing strong churchconnections with their spiritualhome, Dronfield Baptist Church. Weall appreciated Eds handymanskills and he has joined fabriccommittee at church. No it isnt

making curtains its plumbing roofrepairs etc. He must be theiranswer to prayer.

Morag and Alan Clementsmoved south to the warmer climateof Teignmouth, Devon. It took 6months to actually get into theirnew home so they sojourned in

Portugal for 2 months. They arenow finding their feet in the localcommunity and deciding whichchurch community to join. TheBaptist Church seems a very goodoption Morag reports and of courseall the churches would be delightedto have Alans music skills. Theylook forward to a busy summer

with family taking advantage ofthem for seaside holidays.

Glynn, Monica and AlexIn the coming weeks, the Joness willbe moving to pastures new, Glossopnear Manchester. We pray theirnew homes and their newadventures in being closer to theirfamily, the Haslers, will be a joy tothem.Let's pray for all those who havebeen part of us. Lets remember thevalue they have added to many ofour lives and pray that theirrespective new churches, familyand friends are being blessed bythem. MISSION GROUP

REPORTThe mission group have sought toencourage interest and prayer inthe work of world mission andmission closer to home over theyear. We had a weekend visit fromKathleen Burns 27-29 September2013 which went really well andwas a blessing both to the church

and to Kathleen as she shared hervision and passion for the work theLord has called her to in Uganda. We also had an unexpected visitfrom Sjoerd and Rachel van Veen onthe 16th of Feb where they wereable in person to share prayerpoints during the mission prayerslot in the church service.

On the 6th of July we are lookingforward to Ruth Sykes visiting thechurch and bringing us up-to-datewith her work in Azerbaijan.

We still feature one of our missionpartners on the mission board eachmonth but we have not continuedwith the idea of having a quiz basedon the information on the board as

the initial take up on the first twoquizzes was disappointingly low.

We were especially encouragedwhen our young people researchedand presented the mission prayerslot in the service in March they dida fine job and we would like tofoster and encourage thismissionary interest amongst our

young people. The mission work of YFC Hull andBeverley schools trust is alsosupported by the church and their

prayer letters are available on themission table and are emailed

around the prayer chain. The mission group are keen to forgestronger links with the churchleadership team so that the churchcan have a strong joined up passionfor mission guided by theLeadership team.

We are always keen to welcomemore people into the mission groupand if you would like to know howyou can be involved please talk toone of the mission team.

    PRAYER NETWORK

A wise man once said, Prayer is thepower house of the church. Thismeans we must keep stoking theboilers to make sure the powerdoesnt go out.

Over the last year there have beenregular opportunities to pray ingroups Pop in to pray (Tuesdayafternoons); house of prayer

(Thursday evenings) and Breakfastwith God (Wednesday mornings).Due to people moving on the lattertwo have now ceased.

There have also been ad hocopportunities with organised prayermeetings. Though numbersattending these have often beensmall they have been times of real

blessing, coming into Godspresence, lifting our voices inprayer, and listening to His voice.

The prayer life of the church is alsoalive amongst the house groups and

    MUSIC AND TECHTEAMS

Over the past year we have saidgoodbye to several longstandingmembers of the music teams, eitherbecause they have moved away (toshare their talents in newcongregations, no doubt) or aretaking a well-deserved breakbecause of other commitments. ButGod continues to bless us, as justwhen we think we will struggle tomaintain two groups, new peoplevolunteer to take part, bringing newenthusiasm, and sometimes newinstruments! They often also bringfresh ideas and songs, so we

enjoyed a "jam session" earlier thisyear to learn some new songs, someof which we have already used inSunday morning services. As ever,we are hugely grateful to all ourdedicated and talented singers andmusicians, many of whom haveother commitments at church aswell as being busy outside of

church. Thank you to everyone whois and has been involved. Newmembers are always welcome - justhave a word with Emily or with IanPeplow.

lunch break at school each week thanthere are in Church each Sunday. Pleasepray that future funding for these clubscan be secured so that this work cancontinue next year.

Please pray that the schools workers

will find ways of using their limitedtime effectively to make Jesus known tothe young people of the town.

    John Sykes

The current funding situation is suchthat BSCT can only employ Andrea and

Phil for 2 days (1 day each) in Beverleysecondary schools. There continues tobe a great demand for pastoral work inall the secondary schools. The schoolsworkers offer support using self-esteemand anger management courses withgroups of young people or in one-to-onesituations. It is sad that there are somany young people in need of such helpbut great that Christians are there toprovide help and support. This work isgreatly valued by the schools. Curricu-lum support in RE lessons, particularlyat Beverley Grammar School, is alsomuch appreciated. Much more could bedone if funding permitted. In the cur-rent school year it has not been possibleto run any lunch time clubs in the sec-ondary schools. SUNDAY GROUPS:

    Crche, cbeebies, CBBC& BBC HD

Our Sunday school groups cater for uptoone-third of our Sunday morningcongregation with 33 names on thebooks. Sunday school has grown overthe last 12-months with some newfamilies choosing to worship with us.

All of the groups are now using

Scripture Union material as the basis oftheir teaching sessions, with someleaders supplementing with UrbanSaints resources, as needed.

To help with the transition from HDSunday school to being part of adultchurch, the HD group have continued toremain in the service for the sermononce every 4 or 5 weeks, answeringquestions kindly set by the preacher.

This has helped them learn how to listento a sermon and spot the relevantlearnings. This is always followed upwith a short discussion with an HDleader to make sure theyve got thepoint!

My thanks go to all the leaders andhelpers who make sure our youngcongregation learn of the wonders ofGod and his love for them.
