The Hopkins Dining Parlour is one of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan’s most popular restaurants. Both the food and the service are fabulous and as if that’s not enough Hopkins is housed in a beautiful old mansion. The house was built in 1905 as the private residence of Edward and Minnie Hopkins. The couple lived in their luxurious home until their deaths when their daughter inherited the house but the place was far too large for her needs so she converted several rooms into rental suites. Then in 1978, the Pierce family purchased the house, restored it to its former glory and turned it into Hopkins Dining Parlour. The restaurant has enjoyed great success over the years, becoming famous for its good food and lovely Victorian atmosphere. In 2003, the Hopkins Dining Parlour also became known, that’s to the television series Creepy Canada, for its ghosts. Over the years Hopkin’s owner, Gladys Pierce has never shied away from the restaurants haunted reputation. The Creepy Canada episode plays frequently on the television in the lounge, staff

members are also welcome to share their ghost stories with guests. Tours of the home, designated a historical property, are spiced up with as many paranormal facts as historical ones and if people who come by are as interested in the spirits as the chicken wings, that’s all right with Glady. Members of the staff have seen roasting pans fly across the kitchen, watched a balloon “walk” up the central staircase, and grabbed at a hanging candle holder as it swung wildly and mysteriously to and fro. After the restaurant was closed for the night, they’ve heard glasses tinkling and chairs scraping across the floor. They have witnessed misty white apparitions that vanish upon being noticed and a blue streak of light, the size of a small child, bolting up the stairs. People have had their shoulders tapped, their necks rubbed. The main floor ladies washroom was one of the areas featured on Creepy Canada and for very good reason.

It is an extremely active zone, guests and staff alike have all walked in to find that the taps had turned themselves on-which sometimes starts right in front of people. And many who walk into the washroom find that it is not as empty as it seems at first glance. When the lunch rush was over at Hopkins Parlour staff supervisor, Brenda Wilson would take a moment to tell a story. It’s about a couple from Regina who ran a karaoke business. “They had come out to see us on a Monday, when we don’t open until four” said Brenda. “And they took a picture of the building. Then they came back the following Sunday to show us the picture.” In the photo through one of the windows, the image of a woman and a cocker spaniel dog could be seen. The figures were clear, but transparent, and the picture was taken when the restaurant was locked and empty. “I’ve had other people say the same thing,” said Brenda. “That if you drive by here late at night you can see a woman in the window. So, now, I don’t look in the windows when I leave.” Brenda started with Hopkins in 1985 and she remained employed here for over 30 years.
