Between the Lines A Newsletter from the Friends of the Kewanee Public Library and the Library Staff Spring 2019 National Library Week This year, National Library Week runs from April 7th through the 13th, and as always, we are bustling with programs. Throughout the entire week, we are once again having our annual Food for Fines drive. Bring any unexpired, nonperishable food item to any of our Circulation desks to receive a dollar off a fine on any previously returned library items. Each item donated goes to our local food pantry. The Annual Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale will, as always, be held during the week. The sale will run as it did last year, no preview days for Friends members, instead two full days for everyone. The sale will also once again be held in the Main floor reading room. Be sure to stop in on both days, Tuesday, April 9th and Wednesday, April 10th, as new items will be brought up as carts empty. Prices will run as they have for the last couple of years; you pay what you believe the items are worth rather than having assigned pricing. On Tuesday, April 9th, at 6 pm, we will host Dick Volker, of Princeton, as he enlightens us on the History of the Coca- Cola Company. The program is expected to run an hour to an hour and a half, depending on how many questions you'd like to ask. Summer Reading Program The theme of our Summer Reading Program this year is "It's Showtime at Your Library!" We'll officially start on May 27th. Registration will begin two weeks before, on May 13th. We hope you'll join us!

Spring 2019

National Library WeekThis year, National Library Week runs from April 7th through the 13th, and as always, we are bustling with programs.

Throughout the entire week, we are once again having our annual Food for Fines drive. Bring any unexpired,

nonperishable food item to any of our Circulation desks to receive a dollar off a fine on any previously returned library items.

Prices will run as they have for the last couple of years; you pay what you

believe the items are worth rather than having assigned pricing.

On Tuesday, April 9th, at 6 pm, we will host Dick Volker, of Princeton, as he enlightens us on the History of the Coca-Cola Company. The program is expected to run an hour to an hour and a half, depending on how many questions you'd

like to ask.

Summer Reading ProgramThe theme of our Summer Reading Program this year is "It's Showtime at Your Library!" We'll

officially start on May 27th. Registration will begin two weeks before, on May 13th. We hope you'll join us!

March 18th - Our Souls at Night by Kent HarufIn the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf's inimitable fiction, Addie Moore

pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was

quite fond of Louis's wife. His daughter lives hours away, her son even farther, and Addie and Louis have long been living alone in empty houses, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with. But maybe that could change? As Addie and Louis come to know each other better--their pleasures and their difficulties--a beautiful story of second chances unfolds, making Our Souls at

Night the perfect final installment to this beloved writer's enduring contribution to American literature.

May 20th - The Knitting Circle by Ann Hood

April 15th - When the Emperor was Divine by Julie OtsukaOn a sunny day in Berkeley, California, in 1942, a woman sees a sign in a post office window, returns

to her home, and matter-of-factly begins to pack her family's possessions. Like thousands of other Japanese Americans they have been reclassified, virtually overnight, as enemy aliens and are about to

be uprooted from their home and sent to a dusty internment camp in the Utah desert. In this lean and devastatingly evocative first novel, Julie Otsuka tells their story from five flawlessly realized points of view and conveys the exact emotional texture of their experience: the thin-walled

barracks and barbed-wire fences, the omnipresent fear and loneliness, the unheralded feats of heroism. When the Emperor Was Divine is a work of enormous power that makes a shameful episode

of our history as immediate as today's headlines.

After the loss of her only child, Mary Baxter finds herself unable to read or write, the activities that used to be her primary source of comfort. She reluctantly joins a knitting circle as a way to fill her lonely days—not knowing it will change her life. As they teach Mary new knitting techniques, the

women in the circle also reveal their own secrets of loss, love, and hope. With time, Mary is finally able to tell her own story of grief, and in so doing finds the spark of life again.

With two separate meeting times, you’re sure to be able to make it to our adult book club.  We meet at 2 and 7 pm on the third Monday of every month.  Both meeting times are held in the Kewanee Library Community Room.

Don't be intimidated if you're new to the book club world; we’re not a formal group of literary critics.  Most of us just like to read a good book.

Stop by the Information Services desk in the lower level to get this month’s book selection.

Henry County Genealogical SocietyEach month, on the 4th Monday, the library hosts the Henry County Genealogical Society as it brings a variety of exciting

presenters in to speak. Join us at 1:30 pm for these enthralling programs.

Recipe Round-Up ReturnsWe've all suffered throughout winter, not being able to share new recipes, but we are

excited to announce, starting April 25th, Recipe Round-Up is Back!

If you've never been a part of Recipe Round-Up, don't panic; it's simple to join. All you need is to find a recipe matching our theme of the month. Cook it, and bring it, along with

copies of your recipe, in to share when we meet.

Our first theme this year will be Pizza, so stop by at noon with your recipe and dish and let's all chow down.

upcoming children's programmingThe winter may have delayed us, but Coding for Tweens with Andrew Mansheim continues. Our classes continue,

and the next will be on March 6th at 3:30 pm. Students in 5th - 8th grades are encouraged to join us as we all learn of few of the basics of coding. Be sure to register in advance to reserve your spot as we do have limited space each

session. The class runs about 45 minutes to an hour. This program is sponsored by a grant which was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the Institute of Museum

and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

Mr. Steve is coming back! Join us on May 31st at 11 am as Mr. Steve drops by to entertain us with his spectacular show. There's sure to be a bit of magic,

some fantastic songs, some ballooning, and, as always, tons of fun. His program usually runs about 45 minutes. And don't forget to stop in to check out his book, Bossy and Bernerd's Stillman Valley Farm.

Throughout the week of Spring Break, March 25th through the 30th, be sure to stop by to snag one of our amazing Make and Take crafts. We'll also be showing Smallfoot at 3:30 pm, March 27th. Be

sure to ask at the Children's Desk as the week nears to get more details.

Now that some of the weather has passed, our Family Activity Nights are back in business. Bring the children and join us in April for a Weather and Earth Day themed night. Ask in the Children's Room for more information.

And don't forget! Every week on Mondays at 6 pm and Wednesdays at 11 am, we have a Storytime for

preschool children.

A Note from Your Friends...

Thank you to all who have renewed your membership.

Our holiday book table sales have been successful, so look for additional sales of this type.

As spring approaches we are preparing for our Annual Spring Book Sale to be held during National Library Week, April 8-13.

Holding the sale on the main floor of the library last year was well received, so we will set it up there again this year.

While your book donations for the sale are always appreciated, please help us by bringing in books that are clean and able to

be used in our sales.

Thank you for your continued support of Friends.
