Dear Partners,

e thank God for His provision in every service He trusts, moreover for the blessings and protection He gives to our partners who always supports Tangan

Pengharapan.

Mobile Clinic for NTT has been made and will be operating on September to reach people in rural areas in NTT having no proper medical facilities.

On last August, again we visited the province of NTT with some volunteers and partners who want to see Tangan Pengharapan’s projects in some villages directly.

In our trip this time we held free cataract surgery in some villages and operated 51 cataract affected eyeballs. We also visited our project Livestock for Children’s Education in our Centers in rural areas in NTT. Pigpens have already been built with the expectation next year YTP Centers will have their own pigs that will be used to pay children academic expenses.

The residential behind artesian well is nev-er dull. Local men have left their homes

early in the morning heading to the local port, trying to work as unskilled labors on trucks carrying cements and building ma-terials to be delivered to building materials stores around Merauke.

Loud noise coming out from the children who are playing always can be heard in the poorest houses – which is actually not like house in general. The houses are made of used boards taken from the port and per-forated used tarps and zincs. Some of men often dive to collect some pieces of old iron from the sunk ship. Then they weld these pieces of iron and make poles and walls out of them.

Marinus Bagatu:

Mama I want togo to school

Marinus Bagatu, 5, lives in one of the ‘homes’ with his father, mother and his baby brother. A big hole in the wall actu-ally is not a door. It is because they have not board to cover it. You can imagine how cold it is in the night time, and the cold wind coming from the sea makes the cold night gets colder. Marinus’ baby brother sleeps on a piece of a thin stained cloth. There is no chair, bed, or matrass except some clothes and shirts hung on the wall. The atmosphere in the small room is airless, which is very dif-ferent from the one of the worth living homes.

In front of the staircase there is a small couch. It is not a place where one can just lie down and relax. It is a place where de-ceased Obeth (a relative of Marinus’ par-ents) was laid down. He just died some time ago after several years of struggling with AIDS and stroke. An little Marinus must live in unhealthy surrounding. Hu-midity in his home makes him suffer from asthma.

That morning Marinus came to his mother who was washing their clothes, saying, “ Mama, I want to to go school.” Respond-ing to her son’s request, his mother came up with an answer, saying, “The school fee is so expensive, Marinus.” “But I want to go to Mama Ibu’s preschool – name given to adult woman whom they honor. It’s free. Becoming educated, one day I will be an employee. I will buy some pieces of zinc and board and we will build a nice house, mamaaaa.”

But his mother’s answer was the same. His mother wants him to understand the family’s situation, that they have meager income so they can’t send him to school. And Marinus has to accept this fact. Feel-ing disappointed, he left his mother who continues her washing clothes in the bright sunny morning.

All he could do is to hide his aspiration. He, then, ran to his friends who were playing by the swamp. His little feet were tracking the wood connecting his little home with other homes. Marinus’ moth-er was still daydreaming about something no one knows, waiting for her husband to come home in the evening hoping that he would bring dinner for them. No break-fast, no lunch, just only 3 sets of rice wrapped in paper for their dinner.

C ataract has become a horrifying specter to those who once suffered from it. Al-though today many ways to cure cata-

ract are found, many people are still afraid of the risk they might face although it ac-tually never happens. It is not astonishing because eye is man’s susceptible vital or-gan. Besides that, lack of fund causes them refuse cataract surgery, and it becomes the main hindrance for many people in this modern era, especially for those with mea-ger income.Mrs. Natboki Taebenu, 45, do her duties as a housewife eagerly. The free cataract sur-gery she underwent has returned her sight.

She never expected such thing to happen, knowing that her life and his husband in-come as a farmer are insufficient, and in addition to that, she has to meet the needs of her 3 children.Initially, she did not care about her blurry vision. She thought that was quite normal for a woman of her age. But as the time passed by, her blurred vision gave her more troubles, especially in the day time, when the sunlight was too bright for her to stay outside her home. She had to stop doing chores. But, inside her poor home where there was not enough light, she couldn’t see well either.

She has had this kind of situation for 3 years, and eventually she succumbed to her fate and condition. She no lon-ger could do the chores she used to do. Even her children ‘had to’ understand her mother’s physical condition when they needed her to do something for them like lighting the fire to cook boiled corn, col-lect some water, and so on.“I have had this cataract for 3 years. Every-thing seems like shadows, very unclear. When the sun shines so bright, I can’t see clearly,” she said when Tangan Penghara-pan’s team met her.Living in remote areas without any proper medical facility is hard to think. Besides, the local people’s low income makes them lost their hope of getting well. So no wonder many people with cataract have to forget their wish to get medical tyreat-ment. Even they have some money, they would use it for more other urgent things.

Oberving thwir needs, Yayasan Tangan Pengharaan comes and helps those with cataract to be examined for surgery at no cost. This kind of effort is done to help impoverished people get back their hope and eagerness that once were lost. Af-ter having the cataract surgery, hopefully they can live their lives eagerly with a new hope, of course.“Now I can see and I can do my chores again. Thank you for helping me,” she said, smiling at Tangan Pengharapan’s team.

ad meaning is given to the word ‘vacation’ especially in this Timor

island. It is because during their school vacation, kids do positive things less than they do during the school time. As a result, kids do useless things, like spend-ing all the days playing. To prevent such thing from happening, Yayasan Tangan Pengharapan held ‘gath-ering’ event with the purpose of giving the kids joining YTP Feeling & Learning Center positive impacts in Telukh, Tua-pene, Tliu and Oenasi villages.Besides giving thanks for God’s interven-tion.

This event was made to give positive im-pacts and enrich as well as equip those kids in four villages located in east Amanuban, that they can get a required skill to support their lives. Tangan Pengharapan Feeding & Learning Centers’ coordinator and teachers taught preschoolers to always thank God for what He has given and to keep their spirit in order to reach a future that is full of hope.Besides worship, a ‘talent’ show program was also held. In this program, kids joining Tangan Pengharapan Feeding & Learning Centers showed their talents in singing and dancing. The purpose of this program was to increase their confidence so that they would not fell ashamed of performing in front of audiences.

Total of the elementary kids and preschool-ers coming to that event was about 400. They are from Teluk, Tuapene, Tliu and YTP newly reopened Feeding and Learning Cen-ter on June 16, 2014.

On July 20th, 2014 for the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th, a theme of ‘Love, Sex, and Dating’ related to teenager’s life was prepared. The purpose of this event is to make the teens understand about the importance of choos-ing friends and develop moral standards to reach a bright future.

On June 24th, 2014 girls were trained how to cook and make pastries while boys were trained to make lock bricks, hollow bricks and to breed livestock. The purpose was to teach them skills they can use in the future.

The trainings held in the YTP’s House of Micah stimulated the kids to keep em-powering and developing themselves, and this kind of trainings is going to be an exemplary for educational institution to develop and provide trainings to enrich and equip these kids in facing global com-petition.

Because of the activities mentioned above, Timorese kids’ vacation is no lon-ger the same as it used to be for the kids in four villages in soth Timor Tengah, east Amanuban, NTT. SonyaMagdalena

work as farmers, stone breakers, teach-ers, or laborers with meager income. This situation doesn’t only make their life hard. Even some of families who have economic problems must leave their little ones with their old grandparents who cannot work hard anymore. And the consequence is that many children cannot go to school. They ought to work to support the families they live in. Those who work as farmers do not have their own land to cultivate. They cultivate other’s land and then share the crops with the owners. And they do the same with livestock.

M But Mr. Yunus nobisa is an exception. In his small land, he plants vegetables to meet his family need. If there is more, he sells the vegetables to buy basic needs. It’s important to know that in Timor island water is scarce to get. He must take a long walk to get the water for his farm. And he’s been doing this for years.

He collects the surplus money he makes from selling vegetables to buy chickens. Then he breeds the chickens. It seems besides farming, Mr. Yunus is good at chicken breeding.

To get more income, he, then, sells most of his chickens and with the money he gets he buys pigs. Then he breeds the pigs. Dil-ligently he takes care of his pigs and feeds them regularly, that the pigs grow healthy.Having pigs and chickens, Mr Yunus No-bisa’s life is getting better. Every morning he does all the works and returns home in the sunset. He does all these things to im-prove his family’s life. Difference has made his family live isolated. It is so ironic. But Mr. yunus believes that someday he and his family can be a blessing to the people around them.

The belief he holds tightly in his heart eventually shows its result. One day, Yayasan Tangan Pengharapan com-menced a survey and found Mr. Yunus Nobisa’s family. After seeing and hear-ing about Mr. Yunus who now has two cows, Tangan Pengharapan was moved and helped this family. Tangan Peng-harapan built a kiosk form Mr. Yunus Nobisa in Mauleum, TTS, NTT. Tangan Pengharapan does this since Mr. Yunus is a hard working farmer who tries to support his family despite the econom-ic problems. Through its micro busi-ness program, Yayasan Tangan Peng-harapan can sell stuffs and become a blessing for the people around them.

CRH Jakarta:The first vacation in Jakarta

oliday season from June through July 14th, 2014, was a time to rest

students’ brains from school activities, tests and final exams for the kids in Tan-gan Pengharapan’s Kids Rescue Home in Jakarta.July 3rd, 2014, in a sunny morning at 90 AM, together with Director of Tangan Pengharapan, Ps. Yoanes Kristianus & Mr.s Henny Kristianus whom the kids in Tangan Pengharapan’s Kids Rescue home in Ja-karta call papa and mama, and his family went to the amusement rides ‘Jungle Land’ located in Sentul city.

H Since departing from YTP Kids Rescue Home in Jakarta on Jalan Katerlili I/24 Ke-lapa Gading, the kids looked cheerful. Big smiles were seen on their faces because the got an occasion to have a vacation with Papa (Yoanes Kristianus) and Mama (Henny Kristianus).Coming from rural areas in Sumba Island, NTT, Papua and Mentawai, they often asked what Jungle Land looked like. We could only respond to them, saying, “It is an amusement rides where there are some robotic rides and a park.”

Around 10:30 we arrived at Jungle Land. The kids ran away to enter the amusement rides. But because we needed tickets to get in, so we had to wait for mama (Mrs. Henny Kristianus) to buy them for us.Seeing games in there, some kids hurried up and ran into the amusement rides and tried some rides that were new for them with papa. Papa, then, accompanied them to try the rides here.Their cheerful smiles made us happy. Pa-mungkas, a kid from Mentawai is the first to join Tangan Pengharapan’s Kids Rescue Home in Jakarta, then Opelina and riana from Papua, and Lida Resa and Kurniawa-ti Rihi called Nona and Jerremy Jehuda Charito’o Bureran from Sumba.

12 PM, papa and mama took us to have lunch together and the menus served were various. After lunch, again the kids played all the games in Jungle Land. The last ride we chose was battleship game. Water gunshot made the kids soaked. Instead of avoiding, they just got more cheerful. Smiles were seen on their fac-es in that afternoon. It was exciting to be able to make thosek ids cheerful. Now it’s time for us to re-turn to Jakarta. Papa and mama wished to take them here again with donators who become papas and mamas for those kids and feel happiness, smiles, laughters, and cheerfulness in their coming school vacation. Daud
