Bethlehem Beacon

June 2016

I am writing this newsletter article just after returning

from a week of vacation spent in Austin Texas with

my oldest daughter, Tanya. Sometimes vacations can

seem too short and time flies by, but this wasn’t the

case for me. The time seemed adequate and I feel r

efreshed and rejuvenated. All of this got me thinking

about vacations in general.

As we begin to enter into the summer months,

many of us will be taking some time off for vacations

even if we don’t go anywhere. I’m not sure what your

individual patterns for vacation and times of rest look

like, but vacations for me over the years have taken on

different characteristics. Some of them have been well

planned out with activities every day and others have

simply been times to chill out with no real plans to do

anything specific. The latter are the most relaxing and

enjoyable for me.

Furthermore, this all got me thinking about, not

only vacation time, but the cycle of rest that we need

for daily function. In our daily lives, we can get con-

sumed by all the things that we believe either have to

get done or that we want to accomplish. Have you

ever said or felt like there simply are not enough hours

in the day? These are all signs of the busy-ness we

encounter week in and week out. Health experts say

that we all need a good 7-8 hours of sleep each eve-

ning. We all need times, like a vacation, to simply take

a breather from the hustle and bustle.

Sometimes our time off is still stressful. In some

cases, we might have planned too many activities and

not enough down time. In addition, we may have had

to work extra hours prior to vacation to “get ahead.”

And we may not be fully able to relax on our time off

thinking about what work might have piled up while

we were away and is awaiting our return.

As we begin to enter the summer season and start

any vacations you may have planned, my prayer is

that you too are able to find rest and return refreshed.

All of these thoughts also led me to

think about the 7 day account of

creation and how God rested on the

7th day which then leads me to think

about what it means to observe the

Sabbath.

Sabbath in Hebrew means rest.

Webster defines Sabbath as a : the

seventh day of the week observed from Friday

evening to Saturday evening as a day of rest and

worship by Jews and some Christians and b : Sunday

observed among Christians as a day of rest and

worship. Sabbath or Sunday in our case has been a

time when we rest from our daily labors and set aside

a time to worship God and in essence refresh and pre-

pare for the next week’s activities.

In Luther’s Small Catechism in the ELW, the

explanation of the third commandment, “Remember

the Sabbath day and keep it holy” doesn’t mention

anything about rest. Luther says, “We are to fear and

love God so that we do not despise preaching or God’s

word, but instead keep that word holy and gladly hear

and learn it.” (p.1160)

The encouragement here is to always remember to

set aside time to be at worship each and every week,

even if you are on vacation. As the body of Christ, we

need to gather together and to be with one another to

receive the encouragement and accountability that

comes along with being sisters and brothers in Christ.

Together we hear the word of God in our liturgy,

our readings, and in the preaching. We come into the

presence of Jesus and we receive forgiveness and the

promise of eternal life as we share in Christ’s body

and blood in the Meal. In all of this, we are renewed,

refreshed, and revitalized. We then are sent out once

again to witness to God’s redeeming power and share

the Good News of God’s love with all those with

whom we come in contact in our daily lives.

June Council Meeting is scheduled for the

2nd Monday of June,

June 13th.

Not the normal third Monday.

Pastor’s ponderings continued from page 1

One of the opportunities we offer here at Bethle-

hem is a midweek service on Wednesday evenings at

7:00 for anyone who might be unable to attend on

Sunday. These services are available from Memorial

Day to Labor Day, even during the August Mission

Festival weeks. This reminds me, I have to say that I

was disappointed in our attendance at the Mission

Festival services at our partner congregations this

past year. If we desire to continue this joint worship

services, we need to support them with our atten-

dance.

Please remember that you are welcome and en-

couraged to attend the Wednesday evening services

if you are unable to attend worship on any Sunday

during the summer. This includes vacation time as

well as other Sundays that you are unable to be at

worship. I look forward to seeing you in worship!

Blessings to you all!

The May 2016 Church Council meeting was called to

order by President Ken Wiechers. Pastor Terry led the

devotions and concluded with a prayer.

The roll call was taken with 13 members present.

A motion was made by Ron Meyer and seconded by

Tom Behnfeldt to accept the April 2016 minutes as

printed in the Beacon. The motion passed.

Sue Garmyn gave the treasurer’s report and ex-

plained the various fund balances. A motion to ap-

prove the treasurer’s report as presented was made by

Dan Helberg and seconded by Dean Helberg. The

motion passed.

Pastor Terry began his report stating he felt rejuve-

nated after a week’s vacation with Ann to visit their

daughter in Austin Texas. He also expressed concern

with our August worship pattern as a congregation.

Our participation at other churches is minimal. He is

open to to your thoughts on this. “Breakfast with Bi-

bles on May 7 went well and he is hoping to start this

back up in the fall. Summer school will be June 6-24

and we have invited St. Mark’s and Bethlehem on the

ridge to join us. We are hoping to get a number of

how many will be attending.

Kristy Helberg began the Youth Director’s report

with a thank you to all who attended the Pentecost

luncheon and a thank you to all the parents who

helped with the meal. New Bibles will be presented to

the in-coming third grade students on Sunday June 5

and our high school graduates will also be recognized

on that day. The Sunday School planted two trees out

in the grove with Todd Behnfeldt’s assistance. May

22, will be the last Sunday for Sunday School till fall.

The deacons reported, they have been making and

re-stocking the pews with mission and ministry cards.

In the trustee’s report they will be patching and re-

pairing the driveway and parking lot as needed.

In the elder’s report, Dawn Gerken presented

“Guidelines for Greeters” which will be included in

the three month mailing.

Under old business, the new Church Directory was

handed out during the Pentecost luncheon on May

15th. A sincere thank you to everyone who helped on

this project. A special thanks to Jane Helberg, Mi-

chelle Helberg, Kristy Helberg, Dana Hahn and Pastor

Terry for all of your time and hard work. You did a

great job!

Also under old business, there was a discussion of

our Mission Festival speaker coming in from Colo-

rado. We are checking into providing him with lodg-

ing for two nights and a rental car.

A motion was made by Dan Helberg and seconded

by Dawn Gerken to compensate Kristy Helberg $100

for leading worship on Sunday May 15. The motion

passed.

Under new business, Dana’s vacation will be July

18-22. Pastor Terry will look into seeing if anyone is

interested in covering the office that week. Bethany

(Behnfeldt) Lerch requested a transfer to Resurrection

Lutheran Church in Spring Texas. Dean Helberg

made a motion to accept this request. Matt Fronk sec-

onded it and the motion passed.

Dan Watchman made a motion to accept Lori

Neff’s request to use the church basement July 17,

2016 for Relay for Life with a Silent Auction. Ron

Meyer seconded the motion and the motion passed.

Allison Helmke will help with Summer School and

will be paid $750. Sue Garmyn made a motion to ap-

prove this and Dylan Tieije seconded it. The motion

passed.

There was also discussion about removing the first

pew on each side of the church. This will be a three

month trial period. This is done with the intent of im-

proving the flow for Communion, more space for the

praise team and other programs.

The next church council meeting will be held Mon-

day June 13, 2016 with the executive committee set

for 6:30 pm, followed by full church council at 7:30

pm. The communion helper for Sunday June 5 will be

Alex Behrman.

The motion to adjourn was made by Dylan Tietje

and seconded by Matt Fronk. The meeting concluded

with the collective prayers for our congregational

members, followed by the Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully Submitted,

Deb Peter, Secretary

The church pictorial directories arrived mid-May

2016, and many of these directories were distributed

at the Pentecost luncheon. If you were photographed

by the directory company or submitted a picture for

the publication, then you are entitled to receive a

free copy of the church directory. Please contact

Jane Helberg at 419-599-4810 or the church office at

419-758-3321 to pick up your copy. Additionally,

updated address books are also available for any

church members not pictured in the directory. Again,

please contact Jane Helberg or the church office for

your copy.

It would be very helpful, going forward, if all

congregational members would notify the church

office of any address or phone number changes in

order to have current and up-to-date information.

Thank you in advance for your diligence in this

matter.

Finally, much appreciation is extended to anyone

and everyone who helped in this church directory

project. From the beginnings of this process, we en-

joyed the time our hosts were able to supply during

the photo sessions last fall. Especially, we would

like to express our gratitude to Kristy Helberg, Mi-

chelle Helberg, Dana Hahn, and Pastor Terry

Courter for all of their help in the completion of this

church directory and address book project. Thank

you all!
