THE VISITOR BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH AN UPDATE ON OUR “MAKING GREATER STRIDES” CAMPAIGN JUNE 2015 VOLUME 15, ISSUE 6 This is the first anniversary of our “Making Greater Strides” campaign appeal. So far we have received 47% of the $1,700,000 pledged for debt reduction over a three-year period. This is well ahead of where we anticipated being at this point. These results are exceptional, and I’d like to update you on what we’ve been able to accomplish so far, thanks to your great generosity: Money already given to this ap- peal has enabled us to: Reduce our debt from $2,300,000 one year ago to $1,700,000 . . . Remodel our Engedi Youth Room at the Downtown Campus . . . Help pay for cosmetic im- provements in and around the Fellowship Hall in our Downtown Campus . . . These are remarkable results for just one year! At the end of our appeal two years from now, our debt will be dramatically lower, which will position us for even greater mission and ministry in the future. I want to extend a word of thanks to each of you: 1/Those of you who have already com- pleted your three-year pledge, 2/Those of you who have not only completed, but also ex- ceeded your pledge, 3/Those of you who are “on track” with your pledge, and 4/Those of you who are just beginning to fulfill your financial commit- ment. HOME MEAL JUNE 18 HUDSON BACKPACK

PROGRAM UPDATE

Thank you for your contribu-tions to make this another successful year for the Hud-son Backpack Program! Currently, Bethel Lutheran Church shares the duties of supplying food and packing the backpacks for families at North Hudson Elementary with First Presbyterian Church. Your contributions helped to: Supply the food for 232

backpacks over the school year (approximately 29 fami-lies per month) at North Hudson Elementary

Helped cover the TOTAL monthly cost for ALL Hud-son school district families receiving vouchers of $1,600.00 per month. The most recent count of back-packs packed by all churches in the Hudson School Dis-trict is 162 per month.

Each voucher costs roughly $10.00 and consists of store brand bread, cheese, milk and eggs

Donate grocery store gift cards to our North Hudson families as they head into the summer months when they will not receive back-packs

Thank you for your generos-ity and kindness toward fami-lies in need in our commu-nity! Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us daily. ~ Sally Koch

Join the Bethel crew for their next packing date at Feed My Starving Chil-dren in Eagan, MN! You can get to know other Bethel members while you help feed the hungry. Sixteen volunteers are needed on Saturday, June 6, 2015, 11:30 am- 1:30 pm. Please register online via the link on our Serving & Missions/Ongoing Missions page. If you have any questions, please contact Alan Park at [email protected].

EXCELLENT MUSIC

CONTINUES THIS

SUMMER AT 8 & 11

CONGRATULATIONS,

PASTOR BOB!

Help us celebrate a milestone event with Pastor Bob Bipes: the 50th anniversary of his ordination! A reception will be held on Sunday, June 14 after the 8 am service (Down- town campus) and after the 9:30 service (Highlands cam-pus). Pastor Bob graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA then graduated from Wart-burg Seminary in 1965. He in-terned at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Villa Park, IL.

Pastor Bob was ordained June 13, 1965 at his home church, Peace Lutheran in

Cosmos, MN. His first parish was with Immanuel and Little Plum Lutheran Parish, Pepin, WI (1965-68). He then served churches in Hixton and Meno-monie, WI. In 1986 Pastor Bob and Karalee headed south to a mission start-up in Port St. John, Florida and also served a church in Sunrise, FL. After six years in the Florida sunshine, they moved to South Dakota, where Pastor Bob served churches until 2004. That year, he and Karalee settled in River Falls, WI, and Pastor Bob served as interim pastor at three churches. In 2007, Pastor Bob came to Bethel as interim pastor follow-ing Pastor Joann’s departure. He has been faithfully serving as Bethel’s visitation pastor since 2008. We have been blessed by Pastor Bob’s ministry, his en-ergy and smiling presence (not to mention his generosity in sharing the bounty he grows in his garden!) God’s blessings, Pastor Bob!

The Bethel Chorale sang for

the last time this spring on

Pentecost Sunday, but ex-

cellent music will continue

this summer at the 8 and 11

am traditional services.

Scott Rogness, pianist/singer,

will be with us for all four ser-

vices the weekend of May

30-31, followed by Lindsey

Bordner, baroque violin, on

June 7th. Ms. Bordner will

play a Corelli violin so-

nata. Lola Watson, a dra-

matic soprano with Minne-

sota Opera, will sing hymns

from her youth in the Baptist

tradition on June 14, and

Father’s Day, June 21, will

feature an all-male choir.

Please join us!

ALL-MALE CHOIR

Sunday, June 21, is Father’s

Day. What more appropri-

ate musical accompani-

ment to the traditional ser-

vice at 8 am, than an all-

men’s choir! If you like to

sing in the shower, and try to

imagine what it’s like to sing

with a group, come to re-

hearsal on Tuesday eve-

ning, June 16, at 7:30 in the

Downtown choir loft, and

find out. You may enjoy it so

much that you’ll think about

joining the Bethel Chorale!

Choir director Skip James will

have a rousing anthem and

hymns in parts to celebrate

Father’s Day. Hope you can

join us. No auditions re-

quired.
