A Heart Felt Thanks I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for the cards, gifts, and well wishes received to celebrate my 20th anniver-sary of ordination. The surprise celebration on July 26th was overwhelming! Usually when you get honked at by a car, it’s not good. Well, that got reversed. I can recall only one other time such sounds were indeed music: when we held Easter service in the parking lot!!

I am blessed beyond measure to have received the calling to preach and teach the Word of God. I am thankful to God for the call, for the gifts given to me, and the Spirit’s strength throughout the years. His grace has enhanced the good and tempered the bad. Without it, I would be nothing.

I am blessed with a supportive family: parents, grandparents, wife, children, aunts and uncles. They planted seeds deeply. There are Sunday School teachers, colleagues, and friends who deserve mention. But I want to also reserve space to thank this congregation and the people I work with. Bethany has welcomed my family and I in a most amazing way. Worship Schedule Plans for September—Still 2 Services Live-streamed

Communion Last Sunday of the Month (including drive-through)

At press time, we still encourage people to stay home and watch our services live streamed. Most people are doing exactly that! If you are in any high-risk category, it is imperative that you stay safe at home.

We continue with 2 worship services. Both are livestreamed on Facebook; the 10:30 Praise & Worship is also on our YouTube channel and linked to Paige Findlay’s “Sundays in the South.” Once a service has ended, you can always scroll down the Facebook page and watch the recording, any time.

The doors are not locked, so those who so desire may worship in-person with masks and social distancing. If we re-open more fully, we’ll let you know!

9:00 Traditional worship (sanctuary) with livestream on Facebook

10:30 Praise & Worship (fellowship hall)

with livestream on Facebook & YouTube

How are we seated at worship?

We have marked “seating places” in the sanctuary and the fellowship hall. One seating place is for either an individual or a couple/family of the same household. In

the sanctuary, there are currently around 45 seating places for ~120 people, alternating sides of the pews & including the overflow & balcony. In the fellowship hall, we’re sitting at tables, with around 20 seating places for 60-90 folks.

Tithes and Offerings Need to give?

    Need to receive?

Thank you, Bethany folks! Your generosity in these times has been absolutely amazing. Your church is grateful. We realize that individuals and businesses may be going through tough times financially. Some people have become essentially unemployed or under-employed due to closings or decline in business. Others are able to continue working or have an income not dependent on the current economy. Here’s the deal: some may need assistance from the church, others may be able to continue to give their tithes and offerings. Whether you need to give or to receive at this time, please know that we are here. You can mail your gifts, send through your bank, or give online through our website “bethanyfredericksburg.com.” If you are in

need of assistance, give us a call or stop by the church office.

    Capital Campaign Postponed

In January, Bethany fully expected to begin a capital campaign for our new preschool building in Septem-ber. It would have run through December, with follow-up for 3 years. Due to COVID.19, the church council postponed the campaign until Fall 2021. Of course, gifts this year will be gladly received. But our team training won’t happen until next summer, and we plan a full “kick-off” next September. Please continue to keep our preschool child and staff in your prayers as they begin a new preschool year!

Zoom Sunday School Children & Youth September 13 Starting September 13, Sunday mornings 9:45-10:15ish, we’ll be having Sunday School via Zoom for our children and youth. It’s what you do during a pandemic when you want to keep everyone safe. So, join in on Zoom; Kiesha will divide everyone into “breakoff groups,” each with at least one teacher. Groups will be divided, as best we can into age groups (Pre-K, K-2nd, 3-5th, middle school, high school, etc.) Thanks to the following for leading those groups: Cheryl Flink, Kiesha Priem, Alyssa Rode, Elizabeth White, & Eileen Whited.

For more information on Sunday School and other children and youth “weekday” ministries, see pages 22-24 of this newsletter.

    Position Opening: Director of

    Christian Education

With the retirement of Jayne Marburger, Bethany is seeking a part-time Director of Education (DE) for 70 hours per month (approximately 15 hours per week). The DE works directly with the Director of Children, Youth & Family Ministries (CYFM); the pastors; and the CYFM Committee to plan and execute Sunday morning educational experiences for children and others, and to assist with after-school programs and other occasional weekday CYFM ministries. The DE provides curriculum, resources, and volunteer-recruitment. Membership at Bethany Lutheran Church, a Bachelor’s Degree, and experience in the field of education are strongly preferred. Must be able to work flexible hours in-cluding weekends and some evenings. For a job descrip-tion, contact Layne Petty.

    Holy Communion during COVID.19

    Including 11:30 – 12:00 drive-through

We continue our pandemic practice of offering Holy Com-munion at both services on the last Sunday of each month – this month, it will be September 27. We will also offer the sacrament from 11:30-12:00 under the covered drive-way. Distribution will be “bread only” due to safety precautions.

Lifeboat Log: September Community use of our Lifeboat little food pantry continues to be ex-tremely active during the summer months. BOAT members report that most days the pantry is at least half

empty (and many times almost empty) when they come to fill it. As you have opportunity or inspiration, please feel free to drop by a food donation of your own. Canned meat meals (spaghetti/meatballs, chili, stew, tuna, or chicken breast), canned fruits, canned veggies (corn, sweet peas, carrots, beans), mac and cheese boxes, and soups are always welcome. Either place your donation in Lifeboat itself, or in the storage bench on the Hennig Haus porch. Thank you, in ad-vance, for your partnership in helping meet some of the food insecurity needs in Fredericksburg. To God be the glory!

“FRIEND OF 4-H” Award Bethany received the “Friend of 4-H” award during the August 10th awards banquet. The 4-H leaders expressed gratitude that Bethany lets the organiza-

tion have their annual BBQ sale in a “drive through” in Bethany’s back lot. We are honored by the award! Pastor Casey attended and received the award on be-half of the congregation. In 4-H programs, kids and teens complete hands-on projects in areas like agricul-ture, health, science, and civic engagement in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive lead-ership roles.

  • Men and women across Gillespie County are trying to provide for themselves and their families. Their limited skills prevent them from finding a job or cause them to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. Since April of 2015 and with great support from Bethany Lutheran Church members and prayers, Christian Job Corps of Gillespie County (CJCGC) works every day to serve Fredericksburg and Gillespie County through empowering the unemployed and underemployed to find success in employment and life.

Together Bethany and CJCGC transform lives! CJCGC has suc-cessfully graduated 20 women and men through our job readi-ness classes since 2017. In 2019, with the leadership of Linda Simonsen CJCGC began an outreach program to bring commu-nity and hope to women and men in the Gillespie County Jail. In June of this year, CJCGC opened its doors to the general public offering free one-on-one, walk-in job search assistance through the Job Resource Center, serving 32 individuals in the first two months.

CJCGC continues to need volunteers to share their wisdom, ex-perience and compassion: • Facilitators - Utilize professional expertise and passion for people to educate clients, include (based on preference and as-signment): Bible study, topical instruction and discussion facilita-tion • Mentors - Work one-on-one with matched client to provide support and accountability as an advocate, confidant and en-courager • Community Meal Sponsors - Donate, prepare and partake in a class meal to facilitate a community of support through the

    Bethany Foundation Grant Applications

Due September 15 Bethany Lutheran Foundation of Fredericksburg, Texas, Inc., is now accepting grant applications from local nonprofit organi-zations. The Foundation, whose mission is to Advance and Support the Discipleship of Jesus Christ, was established in 2007 with funds received from Bethany member, Alma Braeutigam, upon her death. The Foundation continues to be supported by Bethany members and the general public through donations, memorials, and bequests. The Foundation is managed by a seven-member governing board elected by the Bethany congregation. Current board members are Tim Dahlstrom, Linda Simonsen, Cristol Schoessow, Bill Heath, Robin Duderstadt, and Merrily Hartmann. Gary McCready is resigning since he is moving away. To date, Bethany Lutheran Foundation has awarded $369,986 to community nonprofit organizations whose outreach pro-grams serve children, seniors, veterans, families, and the de-velopmentally disabled, as well as housing, counseling, emer-gency services, and Christian Ministry programs. Of that amount, Bethany Lutheran Church and Bethany Preschool each have received $96,371. Grant applications may be obtained by calling Cristol Schoes-sow at 830-997-2145. Completed grant applications must be mailed to Bethany Lutheran Foundation, P.O. Box 673, Freder-icksburg, Texas 78624 and postmarked no later than Septem-ber 15, 2020. The Foundation Board sincerely thanks all Bethany members and the public for their continued financial support.

    7

(Continued from p. 6) Committee volunteers needed: • Childcare - One barrier to participate is the need for childcare. We want to be prepared to support potential interns by providing childcare services during training hours. Committee volunteers are needed to help de-velop policy and procedures and to schedule volun-teers as needed. • Hospitality - All gatherings need decoration and food to facilitate community. Committee volunteers are needed to support and organize the hospitality of graduations and other meeting events. As well, volun-teers are needed to transform the CJCGC Training Cen-ter from a wonderful, bare place to one with decor and aesthetics that would encourage learning and facilitate a professional environment. • Social Media - To increase digital involvement with supporters, committee volunteers are needed to de-velop strategies and content to maintain an active so-cial media presence.

If any of these volunteer opportunities are of interest to you or you would just like more information about CJCGC, please contact [email protected] or 830.998.6874.

You can continue to help CJCGC with a financial contri-bution and reach the current goal of raising $20,000. Every amount helps transforms the lives of our neighbors, our children and our community! If you wish to donate to this fund, make your check to “Bethany Lutheran Church” and stub it “Christian Job Corp.” Use your special offering envelope or a pew envelope.

Jumpstart is just what it sounds like…a jumpstart to Confirmation. Students gather for snacks and prayer. After that they have a short lesson followed by a craft, project or game. Jumpstart is designed to serve as an introduction to the Confirmation classes in which they will participate over the next 2 years. Being a smaller group, Jumpstart will function as normally as possi-

ble, keeping social distancing in mind.

    Confirmation Starting September 9th!

    Wednesdays, 5:00-7:00pm

Confirmation is a 2-year program that takes an in- depth look at the Christian faith during the 7th and 8th grades. This year we will examine the Old and New Testament Bible Sto-ries. We will explore the stories of how our Biblical ancestors encoun-tered God’s faithfulness as we learn about how God continues to be faithful to us in our lives. Confirmation sessions take place every Wednesday night from 5:00-7:00pm.

Confirmation will also continue, as normally as possible, keeping social distancing in mind. 23

  • Bethany’s youth programs will look a little bit different this year, due to the current pandemic. We will be doing lots of ex-perimenting to figure out what does and doesn’t work, so bear with us and thanks for your flexibility!

****Please note that while we will try to continue things as normally as possible, we always have the health and safety of our youth and volunteers in mind. If you are not comfortable with yourselves or your children being physically present for something, we will try our best to work with you to make learning available!****

Children & Youth Sunday School Starting September 13! Sunday mornings, 9:45-10:15ish am

For the month of September, we’re going to

try “Zoom Sunday School” on Sunday

mornings. We’ll meet online from 9:45-10:15ish, between (and not

interfering with) the 9:00am traditional and 10:30 Praise & Worship

services. Once everyone has joined in on Zoom, Kiesha will divide

everyone into “breakoff groups,” each with at least one teacher.

Groups will be divided, as best we can into age groups (pre-k, k-

2nd, 3-5th, middle school, high school, etc. Cheryl Flink, Kiesha

Priem, Alyssa Rode, Elizabeth White, and Eileen Whited will be

leading those groups. If a family only has one device available, we’ll

figure out the best group to put them in! Once breakout groups are

finished, we’ll end in prayer all together. Remember, experimenta-

tion is going to be a big theme this year! Keep an eye or ear out

for the Zoom Meeting Log-in info.

Giving an Offering to Different Bethany Accounts

An FYI you likely don’t know but would be helpful for our volunteer counters & financial secretary: if you wish to give an offering to different funds using one envelope, it is helpful if you make separate checks for the various funds. This is particularly important for gifts to Preschool Building Fund, Hennig House Fund, and Capital Improvement Fund, as those accounts are in a different bank. Thank you for your generosity! And thanks to our volunteer counters who meet every Monday to make sure your offering goes to the fund you have selected.

    Worship Safety “In-Person”

    Let’s keep each other safe

At press time, we encourage people to stay home and watch our services live streamed. If you are in any high-risk category, it is imperative that you stay safe at home.

IF YOU ATTEND IN PERSON: Masks are mandated by our governor & mayor and ur-gently requested by our local hospital! Please, wear masks for the sake of others – a way to “love one an-other.” A limited supply is on hand at Bethany.

If “in-person” worship is completely suspended, we’ll an-nounce by email, group-text, Facebook, phone recording.

Sit in designated seating marked by tables in the fellow-ship hall and signs in the sanctuary. At the end of ser-vices, we will usher folks out to enhance social distanc-ing.

Bulletins will be on pews and on tables. If you use one, please take it home.

Offerings will be collected at entrances and exits, or may be given online or via mail.

The ventilation systems in the sanctuary and fellowship hall have been adjusted to circulate fresh air from out-side on a regular basis preventing virus spread.

    Dear Bethany Lutheran Church,

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of presenting a Gideon re-port on Sunday, July 12! Thank you also for your strong support of the Gideon ministry, and for the heart for missions throughout your congregation!

The monthly mission offering will allow the Gideons to purchase and ship Testaments for distribution across the Hill Country and all parts of the world. We are praying along with your congregation that those will touch hearts and result in the salvation of many souls, and claiming God’s promise that His word will accomplish exactly what he wants.

The Hill Country Gideons and I are praying for your church and for God’s leadership as you teach and reach people with the Gospel. We pray God’s wisdom and leadership in every aspect of your min-istry.

Again, thank you for your strong support of the Gideon ministry! In His Service,

Clarence Dykstra For the Hill Country Gideons

This webinar is open to all congregational members to learn more about the foundation’s comprehensive leg-acy planning services for family and ministry. The founda-tion is a partner ministry of the three ELCA synods in Texas and offers its services at no cost and no obligation.

A congregation member may say, “I like the idea of leaving a gift to my church when I pass away, but I’d like to know more about how to create a plan for family and ministry.” The church has a dedicated ministry for just this kind of support through Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest. A gift planner is available in each synod that can guide you to clarify your goals and objectives in plan-ning. Any congregation member can establish a robust personal legacy plan with the guidance of the synod gift planner. Those with existing plans should consider review-ing their plans to make sure they continue to meet their goals for family and ministry.

All members of ELCA congregations are invited to participate in these webinars. Those who may have addi-tional questions or need assistance with registration are invited to contact Deacon John Dellis, senior gift planner

for congregations in the Southwestern Texas Synod, at (830) 305-2758 or [email protected]. 13

Our family is so appreciative to Bethany for introduc-ing Zachary to Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp as a 6th grader. He has traveled to Colorado every summer to grow his faith and explore this beautiful mountain. Last summer, he even had the opportunity to stay an extra week as a vol-unteer counselor. This summer, he traveled once again to RTLC with two friends and was able to experience “Into the Wild” camping where graduated seniors go backpacking on the mountain. They also participate in Bible study, singing, cooking, fishing, and lots of hiking. We are also grateful that Zachary has been able to earn his way to camp most sum-mers through his youth account which accumulates by volun-teering through our church. We would highly recommend this experience to any parents that are looking for a faith walk for their children! The Willis Family-Michele, Shane, & Zachary
