Train the young in the way they should go; even when

old, they will not swerve from it

~Proverbs 22:6

And the school year begins! Where did the summer go?

Well I suppose it went to Synod Assembly, our Imagine Renewal Retreat, Vacation

Bible School and Small Seeds, and everywhere else.

As summer begins to wind down, we look forward to the school year. As our young

ones go off to classes, to be trained in their education both in the world and here in

our church too, I wonder how our educations have trained us.

Proverbs 22 says that even when old, we will not swerve from what we were trained

in, and although in some ways that might give us solace. If we were trained in love,

hope, and mercy, then I do hope that we never swerve from that teaching.

But if we were trained, even in subtle ways, to fail at following God’s commandments.

If we forget how to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves, what then?

My hope is that as we look at this school year beginning, the teachers at the schools

have their lesson plans, and so do we in the church. Let’s train our young ones, each

other, and ourselves in love for those who are on the margins. Let’s teach each other

how to find hope even in the midst of hatred, bigotry, and heartbreak in our world.

Let’s learn how to lean into mercy, into forgiveness, knowing that as we share mercy,

we need that mercy ourselves.

As we begin this school year, I hope you are as excited as I am for the new ways we

are reaching out into our congregation and into our community: we are training

ourselves in Christian education for both the young and the...less-young. We’re

reaching out in fellowship over movies, meals, singing, and more. We’re finding ways

to train ourselves in service to our neighbor and to God’s creation.

We’re busy! As we begin this school year, as we contemplate our own training both

when we were young and now that we are less young, we can look forward to the

amazing ways God is working in us and through us, and we can live into the love, hope,

and mercy that we are given in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Let’s get to it!

~Pastor Megan

Dear Bethany Friends,

My heart is filled with gratitude to you all for your love and support as I have been learning to cope with the loss of my dear Bob. Seeing Judy Bailey, and Kathy and Clarence Newton at our memorial service on Bob’s birthday made me feel so connected to you all. And then I was gifted with a precious prayer shawl…a beautiful gift of love and comfort. Thank you all so much! I am now settled in a sweet con-do in Beaverton, close to my two youngest children and their families who keep my life busy and give me a sense of purpose. My new address is 16248 SW Audubon St. #204, Beaverton, Or 97003. My phone number and email remain the same. My love and prayers of gratitude for you all… Karen Bialozor

Women’s Bible Study Group & all my friends at Bethany,

I can only hope to find another group of women and a new church who have been as loving, caring and wise as all of you. Please continue to keep Ed in your prayers. He's met

with his oncologist and they've offered some other options to him if he can tolerate them so our hopes have been raised. I'll be thinking of you all as you meet. My new address is 11401 3rd Ave SE #H09, Everett WA 98208.

I Love You All!!!

Small Seeds Children’s Ministry

Each month at Bethany we celebrate our young

ones, planting seeds of faith and excitement through

our Small Seeds weekends!

Small Seeds Saturday – Giving our young ones space to grow in their

faith, to play, and to get to know each other, Small Seeds Saturday is

two hours of games, Bible, crafts, & fun!

Mark your calendar: September 9th @ 1:00pm

Small Seeds Sunday – Knowing that part of planting small seeds for

our children is helping them to see how Worship can be for them too!

These special worship services will have the usual litany simplified,

song choices familiar to our young ones (and the young at heart), a chil-

dren’s message, as well as an invitation to our children to help lead

through lighting the candles and ushering.

Mark your calendar: September 10th @ 9:30am

Steering Committee Meeting

What’s is a Steering Committee? This is the group of church members

and pastors from 6 ELCA churches in our area that gather regularly to

discuss how to serve our community, as well as create planned events

like the joint Reformation service or the Soup-er Game Day. Think you

might have a voice to share? Join us at Stella Lutheran Chapel on

Sunday, Sept 17 @ 2:00pm

Reformation Sunday October 29th is Reformation Sunday! This is the Sunday every year where we celebrate the anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 thesis to the door of the Wittenberg church. Each year we gather

together with our fellow ELCA churches in our area for a joint worship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Longview! This year, as we celebrate 500

years of Reformation, we join together for worship at 10am with Rev. Kim Latterell speaking, followed by a potluck lunch afterwards.

Event Updates

September is Pledge Month! God has given us so many gifts. God gives us our talents, our time, and even our financial gifts. When we use our gifts, when we share our gifts, we too are blessed. During the month of September, members of Bethany are sharing their own experiences of being blessed by giving at Bethany, we ask as you hear their stories and consider the ways in which you have been blessed, that you prayerfully consider your own giving at Beth-any for the 2018 year. Your gifts do so much, and even a few dollars can make an incredible difference in our ministry together. Please bring your pledges to worship on October 1st for Pledge Sun-day, and thank you for your contributions to Bethany.

Congratulations!

On September 7th, 2016 Pastor Megan will have be

celebrating 1 year at Bethany! She started working at Bethany on

September 7th, was ordained on September 8th and her Installa-

tion was on September 11th, 2016. We are so grateful that the

Lord has sent us this remarkable Pastor who has helped us to grow

and breathe new life into Bethany, and also a special thank-you to

Greg and Hadley for joining our Bethany family!
