When asked what three words Beth El President Jerry Schnydman would use to describe his presidency, he simply stated, “It was fabulous!”

Jerry, who has been a Beth El member for over 40 years, will step down as Beth El’s 29th President as First Vice President Michael Rubenstein assumes the role of Beth El’s 30th President this May.

Always a true team player, Jerry credits his success to the clergy, affectionately known to him as the “Clergy Dream Team,” and the staff at Beth El.

“I sincerely want to thank Rabbi Schwartz, Rabbi Saroken, Cantor King, Dr. Eyal Bor, Gil Kleiner, and Ailene Sher for helping me during the last two years. Their advice has been terrific and I’ve enjoyed getting

to know each one of them better, and a general thank you to all of the staff at Beth El for their kindness to me.”

Although he will no longer oversee the ins and outs of Beth El’s budgets and finances, Jerry will remain a key figure as one of the co-chairs of the Generations Campaign, which has recently surpassed seven of the ten million dollars they are seeking to raise. He says the funds raised in the campaign can help bring the building up to 21st century standards and create a stronger Beth El in the future.

When Jerry joined Beth El with his wife Tammy, he saw a place where his children could further their Hebrew education. He then met with Rabbi Loeb, Cantor Hammerman and Joe Lipavsky—three individuals who sealed the deal for him to become part of the Beth El family. He and Tammy became involved in many activities with Beth El over the years. In fact, Jerry loved Beth El so much, he decided to climb the ranks of the Board of Trustees, eventually leading to his current presidential role.

“As president, Jerry has always had the big picture in focus. He sees things as they can be, not as they are, and that is true leadership,” Executive Director Gil Kleiner said.

During his presidency, Jerry seized as many opportunities as he could to collaborate with incoming President Michael Rubenstein and to build a solid foundation for implementing new ideas, such as Relational Judaism. This term was brought to the forefront of the Jewish community by Dr. Ron Wolfson, who says synagogues need to create programs that will actively engage members to find others who genuinely care about them.

Every four years, we exercise our constitutional rights as Americans to vote for a leader who can effectively carry out the vision of the people of the United States of America. We, as Jews, are also given the freedom and opportunity to vote in a world election that ultimately impacts the State of Israel.

The World Zionist Congress, which meets every five years, was founded by Theodor Herzl in 1897. His philosophy of Zionism allowed the Jews to create a state free of anti-Semitism, and gave them the opportunity to live their lives peacefully and free of harm. Currently, many organizations are working to uphold the roots of Zionism through their plans and programs by allocating funds to specific missions.

MERCAZ, which means “Movement to Re-affirm Conservative American Zionism,” works to make Israel a central figure in the lives of the Jewish people. Since MERCAZ is not funded by the Israeli government, it relies solely on money from the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency. With every vote MERCAZ gets in the WZO election, the more funds they will receive to implement new and beneficial policies and programs for Conservative Jews all over the world.

4 The Voice of Beth El Congregation

With the news coming out over the last couple of weeks that two major arms of the Conservative Movement are selling significant land parcels in New York, the sense of a Conservative Judaism on the wane is again in the air. A number of the movement’s most difficult challenges continue unabated, with little or no end in sight, including funding for the United Synagogue and JTS and the dwindling number of Jews who formally affiliate with Conservative Judaism. Although the movement initially seemed to have a ‘come to Moses’ moment when the Pew study results were released, not much has been done since to directly address these problems. One recommendation that I would make is the Conservative Movement has to find its own version of the iPod. Let me explain.

When we moved to Baltimore, now some 17 years ago (!), Apple Computer stock was selling for about 14 dollars a share. I remember looking at the stock quotes in the newspaper one day (in the days when newspapers had stock pages) and saying something to my wife about it. “If we only had a few extra bucks, we should buy some Apple stock!” Of course we had almost no money to speak of and the thought of actually using some of the money we did have to buy shares of stock in a sinking computer company was ludicrous. Yes, I loved my Mac, but I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I would within a year or so be doing my computing on a dreaded PC. I was about to be forced over to the “dark side,” and there was nothing I could do about it. That was 1998. Apple hung on for another two years. Steve Jobs came back to the company, they released the first iMac, and then a gorgeous laptop, the Powerbook G3. But things were tenuous at best. Pundits were still predicting that Apple Computer would go the way of the dodo bird. It wasn’t, they said, a question of if, it was a question of when.

Then in the fall of 2001, something remarkable happened. Apple released a pocket sized digital music player. They called it the iPod. It looked cool, worked easily, and enabled you to store 1,000 songs in your pocket for anytime listening. The rest of the story we know. The iPod exploded in popularity. The iPhone followed a few years later. Then the iPad. Apple Computer became Apple Inc., now the most valuable company on the planet, long ago surpassing Microsoft,

something that 17 years ago would have seemed as impossible as traveling in time. In the last quarter, Apple sold 38,000 iPhone 6 models an hour. Seven days a week. For three straight months. 38,000 an hour. Talk about hard to imagine.

The point is this— Apple wasn’t an iPod company. It was a computer company. The iPod was a music player. But Apple found a product that it felt it could do something with, even if it wasn’t the company’s bread and butter. And it was that product that enabled Apple to survive and thrive. And it was that product – the iPod – that gave Apple the chance to keep doing what it originally set out to do, namely to make and sell computers. The iPod saved the Mac. It was Apple Inc. that ensured the survival of Apple Computer.

The synagogue world in general and the Conservative Movement in particular needs to find its iPod. Something that we can do, and do well, that might not have much to do with what we’ve done for the last 75 years, but that will speak to people, get them interested, entice them to come through our doors. Maybe it is adult education. Or yoga. Or ice cream, or coffee, or infant-toddler care. Maybe scotch tastings, kayaking or hiking, social action. Healing centers. Maybe some combination of those things.

“If we can find our iPod, its success will enable us to continue to be a synagogue in

the traditional sense of the word.”Somewhere out there is a synagogue version of the iPod. We are looking like crazy for it here. How about you?

Rabbi’s ReflectionBy: Rabbi Steven Schwartz

5The Voice of Beth El Congregation

MERCAZ is running on a platform of a more inclusive Israel. Their five-part mission involves “advancing religious freedom in the State of Israel, actively engaging the next generation in shaping Israel, promoting a vision of Israel as a society striving for peace, strengthening relationships between their communities in Israel, North America and around the globe, and leveraging resources that will allow the Conservative Movement to grow.” (votemercaz.org). All of these elements encompass Herzl’s vision of forming a state in which Jews could live freely and have their voices heard.

While MERCAZ works to maintain the idea of Zionism, it also strives to be progressive and modern. At the present time, in Israel, only Orthodox rabbis have the power to perform life cycle events such as marriages and B’nai Mitzvahs. Because the Orthodox organizations previously received more votes in past World Zionist elections, they are able to carry out their policies, as they have been allotted more money. MERCAZ’s “Inclusive Israel” paves the way for “the recognition of all streams of Judaism in Israel, breaking the stranglehold of the Orthodox Chief Rabbinate on matters of personal status.” (votemercaz.org). Monetary funds gained through the WZO election would also grant MERCAZ the ability to “go green” with environmental programs, bring awareness to youth by providing them with the means to travel to Israel, and affording Jews a safe place to call home.

So why does this election matter? Why should we take the time to vote?

Conservative and Reform Jews do not have enough delegates in the World Zionist Congress to influence change. As previously stated, the Orthodox make up the majority of the WZC. With our votes, we have the power to elect Conservative delegates from MERCAZ who will express our needs and concerns.

According to Rabbi Joshua Weinberg, “If we merely turn out to vote, we win and gain direct influence over policies and funding decisions in Israel. Since we don’t, we cede that ground to those who support building more settlements, and denying legitimacy to women clergy, Reform and Conservative converts, the continuous prevention of civil marriage, and other issues that are so important to our progressive, pluralistic values.” (Tablet Magazine, “What Do You Do About Israel,” 23 Feb. 2015).

We can make a difference in Israel—all we have to do is spare five minutes and fill out a ballot. “Each one of us can influence decision makers in Israel through this Congress,” Rabbi Weinberg said. “Voting in these elections is our manifestation of what it means to be a Zionist; our chance to make our voices heard.”

To submit your ballot for MERCAZ Slate #2, please visit myvoteourisrael.org. or contact Election America at [email protected]. Registration is $5 for adults ages 18 through 30, and $10 for adults over 30. For more information on MERCAZ, please visit votemercaz.org.

“I asked Michael Rubenstein to work on the topic of the day nationwide, which was Relational Judaism,” he said. “He’s done a wonderful job of getting together different kinds of groups here at Beth El, such as the Engagement Committee, and I think that’s been great.”

While Michael is forming new and innovative committees and tackling his new role, Jerry has taken the time to reflect on his two year term. Installing a new sound system, exceeding a half million dollars during the Annual Appeal, and seeing the Achshav Post B’nai Mitzvah Program go to

Israel are only a few of the many accomplishments he has achieved as Beth El’s president.

After his photo is hung in the Baum Board Room among Beth El’s 28 Past Presidents, he will take on a new role as chair of the Johns Hopkins Hillel Board. But not to worry—Jerry will still grace Beth El with his infectious humor and boisterous singing.

“Jerry is a really great boss with an incredible sense of humor,” Director of Development Ailene Sher said. “I will really miss him.”

Agus AcademyMonday Evenings in the Agus Library at 7:00 p.m.Session 5: Death and the AfterlifeFacilitated by Rabbi Steven Schwartz on April 13, 20, and 27. Common wisdom says that Judaism has little to teach us about life after death, but the fact is that Jewish tradition has a great deal to say about what happens after we die. In this class we will look at the tradition’s understanding of Olam Ha’Ba, the World to Come, and what kind of existence our souls might have after our earthly bodies no longer exist. What questions are we asked when we die? Where do our souls go? Does a soul that has passed on to the next world continue to have an impact on this world? Join us as we study the tradition’s answers to these questions and think about death not as the end of something, but as a transitional moment to something new.

Moscow and Jerusalem: The Odd Couple

Facilitated by Dr. Robert O. Freedman on Wednesday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Agus Library. Relations between the Soviet Union/Russia and Israel have had many ups and downs since the Communist revolution of 1917. Initially opposed to Zionism, which it saw as an extension of British Imperialism, the USSR began to change its policy during World

War II as the Red Army saved the lives of many Jews in Eastern and Central Europe. After the war, Moscow surprised the world not only by supporting the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 but also by providing it with military and diplomatic support during the first Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49. Relations cooled, however, in the late Stalin period (1949-53) and under both Khrushchev (1955-1964) and Brezhnev (1964-82). Indeed, Brezhnev broke off diplomatic relations with Israel during the 1967 war. Relations began to improve under Gorbachev (1985-91) who restored diplomatic ties with Israel and allowed hundreds of thousands of Soviet Jews to emigrate to Israel. The good ties continued under both Yeltsin (1991-99) and Putin (2000—), with extensive economic, cultural and even military cooperation, although Israel has been very concerned about Russian aid to Israel’s enemies, Iran and Syria. There is no charge for this program.

Passover Trivia• Why do we recline during a Passover seder? (Shimon Apisdorf, The Survival Kit Family Haggadah)

Reclining means wealth and royalty—but only recline on your left side. Reclining on your right side could lead to a choking hazard!

• We do not recline when eating maror because it is what the slaves ate. Reclining is for royalty. (Ron Wolfson, The Art of Jewish Living Passover Edition)

• The word “seder” means order. (Shimon Apisdorf, The Survival Kit Family Haggadah)

• The afikomen has to be eaten by midnight. (Ron Wolfson, The Art of Jewish Living Passover Edition)

• During World War I, in Vilna, Poland, the rabbinical authorities allowed sweet tea in the Seder ceremony instead of the traditional four cups of wine because kosher wine was very hard to find. (happypassover.net)

• Many seder plates now include an orange which symbolizes the “inclusion of marginalized Jews in mainstream Jewish life.” (Passover: A Joyous Exploration, Jewish Federation of America)

Important Holidays to Remember:This month, we honor the memories of the fallen on both Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron. Yom HaShoah, which remembers those who lost their lives in the Holocaust, is on Thursday, April 16 — a week before Yom HaZikaron, or Israel’s Memorial Day.

Yom HaZikaron, or “Day of Remembrance,” is on Wednesday, April 22. This Jewish holiday commemorates the actions of not only soldiers who perished, but victims of violence and terrorism as well. Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion established the holiday in 1951, three years after Israel was declared a state.

Right on the heels of Yom HaZikaron is Yom Ha’atzmaut — Israel’s Independence Day. The 1948 declaration of the statehood of Israel is celebrated on the 5th day of Iyar. This year, it is on Thursday, April 23. Israel became a state on May 14, 1948.

Lag B’Omer is the counting of the days in between the second seder of Passover and the day before Shavout. The holiday is celebrated on the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer, or the 18th day of Iyar (May 7). Although the Omer is considered to be a period of sadness, bonfires and other celebrations are held as a day of happiness.

Jewish Theological SeminaryThe Torah Fund campaign to support JTS is moving forward. We have 45 benefactors at the $180.00 level who proudly wear this year’s pin — a beautiful Tree of Life. We will hold the benefactor’s tea on Thursday, April 30, where we will gather together for an interesting talk with our rabbi. Each year, the rabbi chooses a topic to share with the benefactors. For a donation of $18 or more you can receive six beautiful all-occasion cards. For more information or cards, please contact Jane Krosin at 410-484-4218 or Hilda Dopkin at 410-486-4453.

BiblioOn Wednesday, April 15, at 12:00 p.m., Jane Krosin, a favorite guest reviewer, will present her special “take” on The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure. This riveting saga of “the city of lights” will captivate the reader. Our hostess this month is Joan Levine. Beth El provides tea and coffee. Please bring a dairy lunch.

Biblio’s closing luncheon on Wednesday, June 10, will be held at David Chu’s Kosher Chinese Bistro. Paula Gallagher, our favorite Pikesville librarian, will inform us of the latest and best reads and upcoming fall publications. Space dictates no “walk ins” after lunch this year. To make a reservation for yourself and guests, please send your check to Beth El Congregation, 8101 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21208 c/o Carol Cummins or Frida Fraiman. Mark Biblio luncheon on your check and envelope. Cost is $20.00 per person.

Time for tea! This has been an English ritual for decades and although we may not have a specific time for tea, Americans have adopted the habit of “having a cup of tea” as a delightful and comforting activity. Collecting teapots has become a new hobby and it is not difficult to see why. There are teapots of every size, design and vintage displayed in the Judaica Shop. Stop in to admire beautifully flowered teapots, some of which look like they were loaned to us from Downton Abbey. Lovely sugars and creamers as well as salt and pepper shakers are exhibited to complete your table decor. All are available for purchase in the Beth El Judaica shop.

May MeetingBeth El Seniors will be holding their May meeting on Sunday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Offit Auditorium. The cost for this dinner is $21.00 for members and $24.00 for guests. Entertainment for the evening will be award-winning pianist, Adam Swanson, who has played Carnegie Hall with Michael Feinstein. Reservations and payments are due no later than Monday, April 20. Please advise us if you would like a sugar-free dessert, and with whom you’d like to be seated. The seating committee will do its best to accommodate your seating wishes. Mark envelope: Ruthye Steinberg. Join us and bring your friends for an entertaining, inexpensive evening: dinner, entertainment and friendly company. Who could ask for anything more?! Remember, a stranger is only a friend you’ve yet to meet. For further information call Ruthye Steinberg at 410-655-8242.

MembershipBeth El Seniors is always welcoming new members 50 years of age or older to join our active organization. Dues are $15.00 per person per year, plus monthly dinner and enjoyable entertainment at the ridiculously low cost of only $21.00 per member. Where else can you go for such a great deal? Call Ruthye Steinberg at 410-655-8242 for a membership application.

Torah Maintenance CardsA project of The Beth El Seniors is to support the maintenance and repair of our synagogue’s Torahs and Megillot. A kosher, usable Torah must be written by hand with a pen and special ink by a learned scribe. Every letter must be perfectly formed and each word must be correctly spelled. The ink cannot be chipped off even a little bit. The parchment on which the Torah is written must be flawless. The slightest tear or smudge will render the Torah unfit for use. The Beth El Torahs are regularly inspected and repaired. This is a costly process. It is a mitzvah to contribute to a process that keeps our sacred scrolls preserved for future generations. Torah Maintenance Cards may be purchased at the Beth El front office or call Dorothy Fineblum at 410-653-2631.

These all-purpose cards are six for $10.00 or $2.00 each.

Social Action CommitteeA Plea to the Beth El FamilyBy Paul Sheitel

Aging is a part of life that we all must face. For many of our older congregants and guests, the loss of their ability to drive is a major blow to their sense of independence.

As a member of the Social Action Committee, I have had the pleasure of helping our members maintain their sense of inclusion as part of our Beth El family by giving some time to transport them to important appointments, services and various other places their families may not be able to drive them to. Giving to others in need is our obligation as Jews, as is our sustaining gift.

Please contact me with any questions you may have at [email protected].

Can I Get a Shalom? The Prince of Kosher Gospel is Back!

By Jill Eisen

Joshua Nelson, the Prince of Kosher Gospel, was a huge hit when he sang for us in 2013. We are so excited to welcome him and his band back for The Rabbi Mark G. Loeb Center for Lifelong Learning’s 1st Wednesdays on May 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Offit Auditorium. This is a special concert in many ways. This is the first time that Beth El Schools has teamed with 1st Wednesdays @ Beth El, which is free and open to the public. Second, this is the year’s only major fundraiser for Beth El Schools. Funds raised will go a long way to helping with school scholarships, upgrading audio and visual equipment and adding computers and iPads to the classrooms for educational and professional development. Third, this is your opportunity to bid on live auction items which include spending time with your favorite clergy or having your own special parking space for the High Holidays. There will also be exciting raffle prizes. Fourth, this concert is for all ages! Students will guest star in a song or two on stage with Joshua Nelson. But no event is complete

without a signature drink. Taking our inspiration from the Preakness cocktail, the Black-Eyed Susan, our drink is called Can I Get a Shalom?! There will be a cash bar with Angry Orchard, other micro brews and wine. The concession stand will be over-the-top with ice cream sundaes, root beer floats, hot pretzels, fresh-popped popcorn, seltzer and soda, freeze pops and healthy snacks.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. so you can come early to meet Joshua Nelson, peruse the raffle baskets and enjoy the concession stand and cash bar. Raffle tickets are $20 for 25 tickets or $1 per ticket. The 1st Wednesdays @ Beth El event follows at 7:00 p.m.

Contact the Berman-Lipavsky Religious School for more information and to buy your raffle tickets at 410-484-4543 or [email protected].

Car WashBy Jill Eisen

Winter is over! Spring is here! It is time to scrub the grime off your car. Bagels, coffee, and tea will be on sale. We are searching for adult volunteers. Please contact Jill Eisen at 410-484-4543 or [email protected] with questions or to volunteer.

Watch the leaves turn purple as our Campaign dollars grow. Each painted leaf represents $500,000 toward our goal of $10 Million.

We are proud to report that $7.8 million has been raised in the Generations Campaign toward our goal of $10 million! Our most grateful appreciation goes to the three families, so far, who have made lead gifts to the Campaign:

Sandra and Malcolm BermanRoslyn and Leonard StolerThe Herbert Bearman Foundation

We are edging closer to our monetary goal. To reach it, much still needs to be accomplished. We are counting on our Beth El membership to push us over the top.

We need your financial support. Please respond affirmatively when a campaigner contacts you. Getting shovels in the ground will require congregation-wide participation.

We also invite you to serve as solicitors to ask other members to join you in making a financial commitment to the Generations Campaign.

To volunteer, all you need to do is call Ailene Sher and sign on. She can be reached at 410-580-5159 or [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.

PARDONOUR DUST

The HVAC system in the Rubin, Offit and Schapiro was installed in 1959. We have been delaying replacement until we had no other alternatives. During the next several months, there will be contractors at Beth El to replace the systems.

We apologize for any inconvenience and will keep you posted on our progress.
