It is said that Hanuka helps us to remember what it is like to be a little kid:
Memories of lighting candles and opening gifts, spinning dreidels and eating
fattening foods... The problem is that we begin to think of Hanuka as a holiday
for children, forgetting that it is a holiday for all ages.
As we light the candles - whether we are alone or we come together with
friends - we must keep in mind the “mature” message of the flame:
to hold hope even when darkness looms
to bring light and vitality to the world
to speak up when justice is at stake
to add your flame of passion for peace
to stand up for yourself as an individual and as a Jew
to be proud of your Jewish heritage, even in a society where the majority is different
to create a brighter future for yourself, for your community, for the Jewish People, and for the world.
We place the Hanukiya on the windowsill or in a place where people from the outside can see the candles. Many
Jewish individuals and families now recite a few words of reflection and perspective before lighting the candles - a
“kavana” - one that keeps everyone youthful in spirit with the wisdom of the ages. This “kavana” is adapted from Siddur
Lev Chadash: In every Jewish heart a Ner Tamid – an Eternal Light – should burn not only in the Synagogue during
worship, but outside, in the market-place, at work, in everyday, life and in all our dealings with others.
May we all enjoy the spirit of Hanuka with its message of youth and maturity, joy and freedom, light and life.
— Rabbi Rick Sherwin
ISRAEL: JUNE 13-24, 2016
Any of the 80 CBA members who have traveled to
Israel on our previous three pilgrimages (some who have
gone on more than one) will attest to the incredibly
uplifting experience of being in the Jewish Homeland
with our congregational family. The highlight of our trip is
our pre-teens and teens reading their respective Torah
portions at the Wall in Jerusalem. Everyone on the trip
will receive an aliya!
If you are possibly-maybe-potentially-probably
interested in participating as a pilgrim on our 40th
Anniversary trip in June, please contact Justin Kuperberg

A Message
From
Elana Moss
This year, the 5th grade will be working on a year long tz’daka project. The students voted and chose the Save a Life Pet Rescue organization. Mission Statement: Save a Life Pet Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to save and enrich the lives of dogs and cats of all ages, breeds, sizes, and conditions that have suffered from neglect, cruelty, abandonment, or overpopulation in high-kill animal shelters. In keeping with our mission, Save a Life Pet Rescue rescues all dogs and cats in need of our assistance, including blind, deaf, and severely injured animals. In fact, we are one of the few animal rescues that treats animals with any illness or injury, including mange, Parvo, distemper, corona, influenza, kennel cough, broken bones, liver shunts. To us, no problem is too big or too small. The students have been learning about the meaning of tz’daka and how it is a Jewish obligation to perform this mitzva. They created their own tz’daka boxes and are excited about collecting donations (monetary or not) to present to this worthwhile organization. Below is a list of items that the class is collecting (as well as monetary donations in order to purchase these items):
High-quality dry dog/puppy and cat/kitten food such as Science Diet, Nutro, Blue Buffalo, Nature’s Choice brands
Goat’s milk
Evaporated milk
Dog and cat toys

Dog and cat collars (preferably small in size)
Dog and cat treats for all ages
Collapsible metal dog crates (preferably large in size)

Thank you so much for your support towards making the 5th grade tz’daka project a success!
L’hitraot, Elana

December is movie month! This will be the only Book & Movie Club meeting we have in
December.
We will be watching “Woman in Gold”. The storyline is as follows: “Sixty years afte fleeing
Vienna, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), an elderly Jewish woman, attempts to reclaim
family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. Among them is a famous portrait of
Maria's beloved Aunt Adele: Gustave Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." With the
help of young lawyer Randy Schoeberg (Ryan Reynolds), Maria embarks upon a lengthy
legal battle to recover this painting and several others, but it will not be easy, for Austria
considers them national treasures.”
We will be meeting at a member’s home to watch, enjoy & discuss this movie on Thursday, December 3rd at 7PM.
Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP for planning purposes for the host. We welcome newcomers at any
time and would be happy to have you join us.

Murray Toborowsky is a former American
History teacher, and over the last 35 years
developed a passion for Jews in American
History. He has taught many classes, and given
speeches on the subject.
Murray will be talking about the second wave of
Jewish immigration to America, The German
Jews. Why did they come to America? Where
did they settle? Why was peddling the choice of
so many? How did America influence them, and
what effect they had on America? What new
denomination of Judaism did they bring?

LOGAN BRETT INTRO will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzva on Saturday,
December 17th. Logan will also lead the Friday evening service on the 16th.
Logan takes pride in his Jewish heritage. He knows that the holidays and
traditions that he has learned have been passed down from generation to
generation and will continue through him. From setting up the menorot on
the mantel every Chanukah, to looking for crumbs before Passover, to having
Shabbat dinner with grandparents every Friday night; these are all customs
that make Judaism not just a religion but a rich heritage.
Logan is in 7th grader at Teague Middle School, where he plays trumpet in
the school band and maintains a strong grade point average. When not in
school, Logan’s hobbies and interests include karate, tennis and playing video
games with friends. Logan is adventurous and willing to travel anywhere. He has a mean serve and is relentless when
playing ping pong with his family.
Sharing in the family’s simcha will be his family friends, near and far!
