INFORMATION ABOUT KEYNOTES

KEYNOTE 1: Dr Scott Eacott

“What makes effective leadership in schools?”

Scott Eacott is an educational administration theorist, Director of the Office of Educational Leadership in the School of Education at the University of New South Wales and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Saskatchewan. He has previously held positions at the University of Newcastle and the Australian Catholic University. Prior to moving into higher education, Scott worked as a Principal in NSW public schools. His is widely published with research interests and his contributions fall into three main areas: relational approaches to educational administration and leadership research; leadership preparation and

development; and school autonomy.

AbstractIrrespective of whom you are talking you; just about everyone has an opinion on schools and schooling. Such conversations are as likely in lounge rooms, dinner parties, and pubs as they are in staff meetings, classrooms, and professional learning sessions. How can we productively engage in this dialogue and debate as educators and educational leaders? Improving the effectiveness of schools is an enduring question for educators, systems, policy makers, and researchers – among others. In this keynote presentation I am going to identify and describe some major schools of thought on what makes an effective school. Importantly, rather than highlight similarities and differences in the perspectives I bring them into conversation to articulate how as educational leaders we can not only contribute but lead such an agenda.

KEYNOTE 2: Panel of Academics from University of Canberra “Snapshot of University of Canberra Research. Possibilities for collaboration for interested schools”. A panel of academics will outline their research interests to the group. Included in the panel are: Dr

Iain Hay, whose research interests include student engagement and Science education; Dr Thomas Nielsen whose research areas include student and staff well-being, positive psychology and values education; Professor Peter Bodycott whose research

interest is first and second language literacy learning, student engagement and international curriculum; Dr Anita Collins whose research interests include music education and brain development: Dr Rosemary Butt whose research work involves working effectively with SLSOs and Dr Misty Adoniou whose area of expertise is primary and secondary literacy, particularly writing, grammar and spelling.

Abstract: Much can be gained from academics and teachers working together. Academics can share best practice research and provide a “critical friend” or “knowledgeable outsider” perspective to teachers’ work in schools. In turn, teachers can provide academics with an understanding of the current issues in schools that teachers’ face daily in their roles, providing academics with currency that enriches their roles as teacher educators. It is potentially a powerful, mutually beneficial partnership.

Discussions have ensued between the Department of Education staff in Queanbeyan and the University of Canberra in relation to possible joint professional learning projects. Interested schools and the UC would potentially access each others’ expertise in project-based learning that support schools’ existing strategic directions, at the same time utilising the research skills and expertise of UC researchers.

The panel will outline some possibilities for collaborative practice under the broad umbrella of social justice and equity projects that focus on improving student learning. They seek an ongoing partnership with interested schools over a number of years, to build capacity and ensure sustainability.

KEYNOTE 3: David Gault [BOSTES] Thurs. Dr Lorraine Beveridge [TQA Queanbeyan] Fri.

“Accreditation at Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher levels”

David Gault is the Senior Policy Officer, Teaching Standards at BOSTES.

David will overview accreditation at the higher levels of Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher. He will outline key differences between accreditation at proficient level, that has been in place for a number of years, and accreditation at the higher levels. He will elaborate on what separates the higher accreditation levels from proficient, specifically “demonstrated capacity to lead other teachers”. The standards of Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher describe candidates’ sphere of influence in the school and beyond. Highly Accomplished targets leadership at the faculty level, Lead is across the school or across-schools.

The keynote will outline the higher levels of accreditation for those teachers wishing to pursue them, and executive who will be supporting teachers in achieving the voluntary higher accreditation levels in schools.

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS:Workshop 1: Wellington Room (downstairs) Bill Waterhouse“Leading Professional Learning”

Bill Waterhouse is a well-known and respected local educator, now officially retired from DoE Educational Services as an advisor and previously a consultant. He is still working in education as a freelance consultant and occasional casual teacher, most recently as relieving Deputy and then Head Teacher at Braidwood Central School. Bill brings a wealth of practical and workable advice to our conference participants.

In response to the higher profile of teacher professional learning in the Professional Development Framework now in place and as we move towards the "new" accreditation requirements for all staff, schools will need to put in place effective Professional Learning systems to facilitate and supply quality learning for our staff. Determining what is needed and then meeting those needs at a systemic level is what it is all about. During this workshop, Bill will lead you into this "head space" and show you where to find on- line resources to assist you.
