Formulae Feeding1

This activity will take place within the first two months of your placement in your setting. This task is not carried out in all settings but depends on the needs of the babies and the parent’s wishes. However you may need to know this when moving to a different setting.

Your duties will include:

• using the knowledge you have already gained about the policy/procedure for this activity

• measuring out appropriate content

• percentages

Once you have completed the task discuss this with your workplace mentor.

Equipment

It would be useful to have the following:

• A baby feeding bottle

• Formula milk

• Sterilising tables/machine

• Kettle/boiled water

• A pen or pencil

There is a section at the back of this chapter for any notes you want to make.

Task 1

Refresh yourself with the procedure for preparing baby formula feeds by skim reading and scanning through the text to identify the key points.

Speak to your mentor about this and confirm it is ok for you to carry out this task.

Highlight and record key points.

Task 2

Now you are clear about the procedure, it is time to carry out the task. You have been asked by the room leader to prepare 4 bottles for different age babies.

Baby 1 – age 3 months old, is a ‘hungry’ baby.

Baby 2 – age 6 months old, is lactose intolerant, but is just starting to be weaned.

Baby 3 – age 8 months old, is being fed solids for lunch as well.

Baby 4 – age 4 months old, usually takes her time but finishes her bottles.

Check the guidelines overleaf and identify how much boiled water you will need to complete all 4 bottles.
