FROM THE DIRECTOR

MEET THE DIRECTORPAB SUNGENIS (Director) has been seen in many Cumberland Players productions in-cluding Don't Dress for Dinner, Twelfth Night, Death of a Salesman, The Mousetrap, and Much Ado About Nothing. He directed CP's productions of The Murder Room, Taming of the Shrew, The Lion in Winter, It's a Wonderful Life, and The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as being the playwright for our 2011 production of Bearding the Lyons. He is the author of the Sidekick series of young adult novels from Month9Books, as well as the au-thor of the novels Go To Hell and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Columbine. He is also the creator of the daily comic strip The New Adventures of Queen Victoria, syndicated by Universal Uclick.

It's strangely appropriate for me to bring the curtain down on my 20 years at CP with this production, since it really brings me back to my roots in co-operative and collaborative comedy.

The play Scapin is based on is in the tradition of the Commedia dell'Arte, where actors played stock characters with stock plots and jokes, but impro-vised the actual dialogue as they went along. In keeping with the tradition of the Commedia (not to mention Bill Irwin's own performances as Scapin at the Roundabout Theater), each of our performances will be slightly differ-ent. Jokes will be added, changed, and improvised each night, ensuring that each of our audiences will get a unique theatrical experience.

I am not providing the usual "setting" information for this play, because it really doesn't have one. Our setting is a stage and our cast is a group of performers putting on a Commedia about that rascal Scapin and his many lies. Our cast is not separated from our audience as is common today, but encouraged to acknowledge and interact wuth playgoers. You are as much a part of our show as the people on stage are, and we hope you will join in if you are asked to take part.

I am blessed to have worked with this immensely talented cast. Most of what you see tonight is the result of their work, not mine, and it is they who deserve your plaudits.

I hope you enjoy this production half as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.

Who's Who in the ProductionSCOTT ARMATO (George) has been involved in all aspects of music and theatre since being bitten by the bug at age seven as an NYC Paperboy in Buena Regional High School's production of Annie. Since then, his life has been filled with artistic endeavors, both musical and theatrical, throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.Scott is in near-constant demand as a musical director, having worked on several dozen full-length musicals, children's shows, and cabarets, including Spring Awakening, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and [title of show]. Scott's casts routinely appreciate his attention to detail, his finely-tuned ear, and his ability to enjoy even the most difficult music, presenting it in such a way as to keep it accessible and fun. Onstage, Scott is known for his comic timing and strong dramatic instinct. Favorite roles include "Max Bialystock" in The Producers, "J. Bruce Ismay" in Titanic, and "Juror #8" in Twelve Angry Men. In addition, Scott is a highly sought-after legit lyric baritone, available for weddings, funerals, or a random Tuesday that you've decided needs more music. He is noted for his Improv workshops, which are both fun and a learning experience for young and old alike. Scott is currently enrolled online in Drexel University's Master's of Science in Arts Administration program, with an intended graduation date of March, 2013. In 2011, he completed his undergraduate studies at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey with a cum laude Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration, Marketing and a cum laude Bachelor's of Arts in Theatre Management with Program Distinction. And, if you ask nicely, Scott will happily kick your butt in chess.

WILL BAEZ (Octave) attended Rowan University majoring in Vocal Performance and Theatre. He has graced the stage in numerous roles such as: Curly in Oklahoma, Cliff in Cabaret, Charlemagne in Pippin, Carmen Ghia in

The Producers, Leaf Coneybear in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Monastatos in The Magic Flute. He was last seen on the Little Theater's stage as Lady Bracknell in last year's production of The Importance of Being Earnest. He would like to thank everyone for all the great memories along the way. HANK CHANDLESS (Argante) has always considered Cumberland Players to be his "home." Some of his favorite performances include The Foreigner, Close Ties, and California Suite, and as the director of Brighton Beach Memoirs, Barefoot in the Park, and Death of a Salesman. Credits outside of CP include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Arsenic and Old Lace; Love, Sex, and the IRS; and 6 RMS Riv Vu among others.

HEIDI DUGAN (Nerine) of Millville is happy to return to The Little Theatre stage after her recent performance in CP's Les Mis at the Levoy Theatre. Heidi’s favorite on-stage roles include Miss Prism (The Importance of Being Earnest) and Truvy (Steel Magnolias) at Cumberland Players and Aunt Em (Wizard of Oz) with Off Broad Street Players. Heidi has also stage managed for community and semi-pro theatre companies for over fifteen years, mostly recently for OBSP’s Damn Yankees at the Levoy. When not working on a show, Heidi teaches elementary and middle school technology in Bridgeton and English literature at Rowan University, serves on the Board of CP and cares for her husband and their two terrific children. Her “free-time” is spent knitting, playing board games with her family, consuming media and planning trips. Heidi wants to thank Pab Sungenis and the casting committee for bringing her into the show. And she always wants to thank and show appreciation for her long-suffering, handsome husband, Joe, as well as her amazing kids. “Thanks for helping keep the house together throughout this

rehearsal and production process. You’re the rock of my life. Love you forever!”

WILLIAM J. “JOE” DUGAN (Geronte)of Millville is a tenured professor of mathematics at Cumberland County College. Most recently, he was featured as the Foreman/Claquesous in CP's production of Les Mis, and as the Rabbi (Fiddler on the Roof) with Off Broad Street Players -- both at The Levoy Theatre. Other roles include Drake and Bert Healy (Annie) with OBSP and FDR (Annie) with Cumberland Players. Joe can be seen performing each summer at the Mystic Realms Fantasy Faire at Wheaton Village. Joe is a proud father of two and enjoys family game nights at home, reading, and following Philadelphia sports, especially the Eagles. Thanks to Pab Sungenis for giving me this terrific role to play, and special thanks to my wife and family, for supporting me while I juggled classes and rehearsal commitments.

D. MICHAEL FARLEY (Scapin) In addition to appearing in productions with The Road Company, Dreamspinners and OBSP, D.M. has performed in over a dozen CP shows since moving to NJ in late 2004. Recent roles have included Algernon (The Importance of Being Earnest), William Barfee (Putnam County Spelling Bee), and Orin Scrivello DDS (Little Shop of Horrors). D.M. has previously served as V.P. of Production for CP, and this fall will be co-directing the Kids@CP production of The Fabulous Fable Factory. D.M. would like to thank his wife Laura for her strength and encouragement.

PHILIP HOPF (Sylvestre) was last seen in the ensemble of CP's 2012 production of Little Shop of Horrors. Other notable roles include Matthew in Bearding the Lyons and the delivery man in Barefoot in the Park. He directed our recent productions of Hansel and Gretel and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

BRADLEY MARCUS (Leandre) has only been involved in a handful of productions thus far, counting Scapin. In Fall 2011, he first started entering the theatre world during his last year of high school, doing You Can’t Take it With You as Anthony P. Kirby in the Vineland High School Polaris Players club. Then, in March 2012, he joined the Cap ‘n’ Dagger club and performed as Monsieur D’Arque for the high school musical, Beauty & the Beast, one of the best productions the school has ever done.

KIMBERLY KRACKE (Hyacinth) has been a member of Cumberland Players since 2005, and has performed in numerous shows with CP and other organizations. Her favorite roles include Lola (Damn Yankees), Lucy (You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown), Chiffon (Little Shop of Horrors), and Marcy Park (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee). She loves to play the piano and spend as much time with her friends and family as possible.

AMBER THOMAS (Zerbinette) directed the children's theater show Big Bad at Cumberland Players. She was also one of six directors of A Night of Edgar Allen Poe as well as Assistant Director of The Importance of Being Earnest. Amber has an Associate’s Degree in Theater from Cumberland County College where she has also been in several shows. Some of her favorite roles there include Violet (It’s A Wonderful Life), Velma (West Side Story), and Clare Ganz (Rumors), among others. At Cumberland Players, she played Miep (The Diary of Anne Frank) followed by Mother Queen (Snow White & the Magic Mirror). Amber would also like to thank her 2-½ year old daughter, Arielle, for being the “best kid ever” as well as her family for their continued patience, love, and support.
