Best Type of Camouflage Pattern/Color Scheme, Thoughts and Opinions

Now, as most of you already know, there is an inordinately high number of different anddiverse camouflage patterns for the discerning survivalist / paramilitary wannabe to choosefrom. Now, despite your opinion on the effectiveness of camouflage in general, the color /

pattern of your equipment is pretty important considering the price tag of some of the stuff wilderness preppers tend to keep around.

Now, Before we get into the discussion ill try to compile a pictoral example of each of thepatterns, but feel free to showcase more if I forget any.

A story about Digital Camo and my personal thoughts.

You see, it's probably the Marine's fault, no scratch that, we'll blame it on the Canadians. The Canadians had this great idea, lets update ourtricolor woodlands to digital woodlands and all will be right with the world. Well the Marine Corps saw this and decided it would be just thegreatest idea to update their own uniforms, nothing too fancy, well just update our woodlands to digital woodlands and our deserts to digitaldeserts and for a time it was good. But then we went and patented the pattern so no one else could have it. The Army got wind of this andsaid "if the Marines got digitals then by god we'll have digitals too" but just to one up the Corps the Army decided to create a pattern thatblended in with everything, and ended up when a pattern that blended in with nothing. The Air force, being the most high tech of thebranches, decided it also needed a futuristic utilities uniform. Like the Army, it choose the ACU, which is already stupid, but then decided toapply it to a pattern that was proven to be ineffective over 30 years ago in Vietnam. Finally, and this is my favorite, the Navy decides to jumpon the digital bandwagon as well, creating a uniform that will only hide you if you're lost at sea

    The Armed Forces are Special

    My Opinions:

Being a marine I'm personable to MARPAT myself (once in Afghanistan I had an Afghani near step on me in an OP), but seriously, the thing Ilike is that MARPAT knows what it is and doesn't try to blend into everything, instead focusing on individual environments, the way camoshould be. The downside is that you will only stay hidden in one AO, but that shouldn't be a problem for most on foot situations. Multicamlooks pretty good, but I can't really give an accurate review as I've never used it before. Even so, it seems a little light tinted for Americanstyle deciduous forests, but that's just my opinion. Next in line are any of the old style patterns with the most effective being the U.S.followed be the British and German. Following those comes the Mat Colors. After that comes the Army ACU, which I really don't find all thateffective unless you get it really dirty.

I agree with you about these new digital camo patterns. They are definitely not as effective in the woods to my eyes as the old woodlandpattern. I do believe they are more effective in urban areas, particularly urban areas of Europe and the US. The most effective camo patternsfor the woods I have found were actually done by the civilians, starting with trebark, mossy oak, and realtree, depending on your location.

Woodland has always been pretty good. I like the Marpat but don't have anything in it.

I do like how the Corps stuck to woodland and desert separately. I do think that you have to cater to different environments. I am impartialto multicam because I wear it, and think that it is great for "all around" wear. It's what the army is moving towards, realizing that the ACUpattern is not an "all around" pattern. I like Marpat woodland and German woodland patterns for the woods also. With that being said, thereare civilian patterns that are way more effective for specific environments. Mossy Oak, Realtree, Enigma, Optifade, and Mothwing are a few

different civilian manufacturers that produce great hunting patterns designed for very specific hunting conditions.. (camo with corn stalksprinted on them, bark patterns for treestand hunting, reeds and cattails for marshy areas, etc. They can't be beat for what they are designed. But for me, I like to keep it simple and general purpose.. multicams or my faded woodland BDU's seem to work pretty good just abouteverywhere.

Guess any of the info and researching I've done, I'd personally do a top 3 of:

    In that order.

update our tricolor woodlands to digital woodlands and all will be right with the world. Well the Marine Corps saw  this and decided it

would be just the greatest idea to update their own uniforms, nothing too fancy, well just update our woodlands to digital woodlands

and our deserts to digital deserts and for a time it was good. But then we went and patented the pattern so no one else could have it.

The Army got wind of this and said "if the Marines got digitals then by god we'll have digitals too" but just to one up the Corps the

Army decided to create a pattern that blended in with everything, and ended up when a pattern that blended in with nothing. The Air

force, being the most high tech of the branches, decided it also needed a futuristic utilities uniform. Like the Army, it choose the ACU,

which is already stupid, but then decided to apply it to a pattern that was proven to be ineffective over 30 years ago in Vietnam.

Finally, and this is my favorite, the Navy decides to jump on the digital bandwagon as well, creating a uniform that will only hide youif you're lost at sea

    The Armed Forces are Special

    My Opinions:

Being a marine I'm personable to MARPAT myself (once in Afghanistan I had an Afghani near step on me in an OP), but seriously, the

thing I like is that MARPAT knows what it is and doesn't try to blend into everything, instead focusing on individual environments, the

way camo should be. The downside is that you will only stay hidden in one AO, but that shouldn't be a problem for most on foot

situations. Multicam looks pretty good, but I can't really give an accurate review as I've never used it before. Even so, it seems a

little light tinted for American style deciduous forests, but that's just my opinion. Next in line are any of the old style patterns with

the most effective being the U.S. followed be the British and German. Following those comes the Mat Colors. After that comes the

Army ACU  , which I really don't find all that effective unless you get it really dirty.

Real tree and for snow the army snow camo.Your enviorment will dictate what is he best.

Semper Fi Marine! Have you ever considered the old USMC pattern used in the Pacific during WWII? The old Pacific pattern, or universal or"puppy print?" I'm not certain what its official designation was but it's easy to find in reproduction or even old commercial design from the50's through the 80's. The surplus and reproduction military stuff (the herringbone twill stuff) is heavy duty and is reversable...green foliageon one side and brown/tan pattern on the other. I've bought jackets from this company...just order slightly larger to feel more roomy:

Sometimes I think an olive drab or a woodsey green color is the most verstile for the woods. It's non-threatening but you still blend in realgood if your still. The best camo in the world doesn't work if you move.

Some friends of mine at Itstactial.com have done 2 in depth comparisons on camo including some very new patters. If interested, go to thearchive button and look for camouflage under gear (it think). They have tested some camo in the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma and someat Big Bend State Park in Texas. I'm curious what everyone thinks about patterns after reading their tests. (I still like both versions of Marpat)

Once you live out in the wilds for a week or 2 any color your cloths were will have taken on a new earthy tone. These earthy tones are thebest cammo, so just roll around in the mud and leaves for 5 minutes and wallllla you are camo fit.

I always thought any earth tone camo is ok, it is the movement that will get you detected/killed.

I play a lot of airsoft and see all kinds of camo at each game, and Multicam is the best, hands down.

I wear Realtree AP when hunting so when TSHTF I'll still blend in but won't look so militant / threatening. IMO

    BEST? what's that?

Speaking both generally and specifically, I think it is more valuable to think of what is: 1. most suited for one's expected environ/challanges;and 2. what is the most versatile to conditions outside #1.

Why do people always ask "What is the BEST X, or BEST Y?"

    EVERY THING IS A COMPROMISE.

You asked for thou hts that's what surfaced.
