Whether it’s purchasing a new car, buying a fresh
loaf of bread or choosing a new dentist, we want the best.
Many longtime residents who call the Valley home know most of the best places to do business — shop for gifts, get a good workout or purchase that special engagement ring.
But as the 49th state’s fast-est-growing region over the past two decades, sometimes it takes a little more than word of mouth to spread the news about the most reliable mechanic in town, best florist or can’t-miss choice for an after-work margarita.
That’s why many turn to the Mat-Su
Valley Frontiersman’s annual Best of the Valley balloting,
where local residents vote for the best of the best.
Best of the Valley vot-ing has traditionally been brisk and vigorous, and
this year was no exception, with readers voting for their
favorites in more categories than ever.
This Best of the Valley 2012 supplement is a testament to those who strive to be the best, and for
many they’re no strangers to our list of winners.
If you want to see all the 2012 winners, turn to page 16. And read the stories and view snapshots of other winners, many making repeat appearances as winners.

WASILLA — Joel Lynch has a very succinct answer when asked what it is that makes Valley readers want to select Spenard Builders Supply as the Valley’s Best Home Improve-ment Store.
“The people,” he said. And by “the people” he
means the employees of SBS.“I’ve got some good, knowledgeable
people that are not just involved with Spenard’s, they get involved with the community, and I think that’s really important,” Lynch said.
Lynch, the company’s area vice president, has been filling in for recently retired Wasilla branch manager Curt Lindner. He said Valley employees are all over the community in their off hours, lending a hand at events and sup-porting local sports teams and organiza-tions.
“It’s so important, I believe, to support the community that’s supporting you,” Lynch said.
Spenard began humbly enough in its first store at Min-nesota Drive and Tudor Road in Anchorage.
From there it has spread statewide. There are stores in Barrow, Kodiak and Sitka, all places far from Anchorage
and the fabled Spenard Road. And while you might know Spenard
as a place to pick up a bucket of paint or box of nails, the company does a lot more. There’s a division to supply civil contractors with paint to stripe high-ways and fabric to lay underneath pave-ment. That plant manufacturing build-ing trusses in Houston is one of three in the state.
“What’s unique about Spenard’s and our company is that we go from the dirt work all the way up through the roof and everything inside,” Lynch said.
But it’s the retail side that won Spe-nard top honors in Best of the Val-ley this year. And retail is a crowded, competitive field with national, big box stores offering alternatives just up the road.
Asked how Spenard remains competi-tive, he repeats that refrain — it’s the people.
“I really believe we’ve got a great staff at every one of our Valley locations, just knowledgeable folks that have done a really good job at helping customers and answering questions and so forth.”
Contact reporter Andrew Wellner at [email protected] or 352-2270.

WASILLA — Sportsman’s Ware-house is kind of an odd duck in a lot of ways.
It’s a large, national chain, but holds small-town community events like Eas-
ter egg hunts and haunted houses. It’s got the wherewithal to compete
on a national level with the likes of Wal-Mart, but can’t just hire anyone — employees have to know what they’re talking about when it comes to the local scene and where to go fishing.
You might think trying to rustle up
a team of employees like that would be tough. You’d be wrong.
“Probably one of the simpler things for us to do is find peo-ple who are passionate about what they do,” said store man-ager Josh Anderson.
Using himself as an exam-ple, Anderson hunts and fishes. It’s what he loves to do, and he likes to share that passion.
“I have a 6-year-old boy, and he’s been out with me numerous times, he loves it. As my wife says, I’ve got him com-pletely brainwashed,” he said.
Anderson’s employees are no differ-ent, he said, as evidenced by the days when the state announced who won coveted hunting permits.
“The day the draw results come out, it’s kind of a celebration in our store,” Anderson said.
The employees are all buzzing about which of them won the right to hunt in
which area. Anderson said he puts that
passion and knowledge to work. His employees lead seminars and teach classes at the store and elsewhere.
As for community involve-ment, it’s rare to see a national chain with Sportsman’s record.
At Christmastime, Santa flies in on a helicopter for free pictures with the kids. On Easter, the store has what Anderson claims is the largest egg hunt in the Valley. And at Halloween, the staff turns the place into a haunted house.
There’s a “fairly popular ladies night” at the store, he said, and employees are constantly turning up at benefit dinners and meetings for various organizations. Anderson said he’s proud a couple of his employees volunteered this winter

“We might be affiliated as a national chain, but we’ve got anywhere from 75 to 125 employees — depending on the time of year — who are Valley resi-dents,” Anderson said. And the national
guys aren’t really calling the shots as to what the store does to be involved in the community.
“These are local decisions being made. These are decisions that we make as a team,” Anderson said. “We do all this just because we want to.”
But the chain is certainly encouraging. “We like to be good stewards of the
community,” Anderson said. What it all adds up to is something
Anderson said loves hearing customers say, “This is my favorite store.”

MAT-SU — The name Kendall is still fairly new on the Valley scene, but according to Frontiersman readers, Kendall Ford of Wasilla has established itself as Best New Car Dealer-ship in our Best of the Valley contest a whopping three years running, and Best Used Car Dealership two years in a row.
To Kendall’s loyal support-ers, the Kendall Ford manage-ment expressed thanks.
As a branch of Kendall Auto Group, the dealership opened its doors in 2008. Since then,
it has been actively involved in the com-munity and dedicated to providing excellent customer service, said David “Doc” Kane, Internet sales manager.
Kane said he operates under the motto, “Treat every customer like you’d want your mom to be treated.”
“When I hand the keys (for a newly purchased vehicle) to the customer, it’s the beginning of the relationship, not the end,” he said.
This progressive approach to lifetime customer service is what helps to set the dealership apart from the local competi-tion, General Manager Grant

Olson said.“Our mission is to deliver an unrivaled customer
experience through highly motivated, knowledgeable and caring professionals,” Olson said. “We want your selection process to be simple, fun and easy. We value your trust and welcome your thoughts.”
Integral to Kendall Ford’s success in the Valley is a philosophy of being actively involved in local orga-nizations and events. The dealership’s community
involvement includes the Clean Air Challenge, Mid-night Sun Charity Shoot and the High Heels for High Hopes Fashion Show benefiting the March of Dimes. Kendall Ford of Wasilla is also an active member of the Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce and a spon-sor of the Mat-Su Miners, as well as local high school sports teams.
“We’re proud to be a part of this vibrant and diverse community,” Olson said. “We strive to partner with local organizations that provide help for youth, fami-lies, health and education.”
Kendall has a wide selection of new and used vehicles as well as a full service department. Car shoppers can
find extensive information about inventory, financing and hours of operation at kendallfordofwasilla.com. The social media savvy can also stay up to date with everything Kendall Ford has to offer on the dealer-ship’s Facebook page.
“I have never experienced such professional atten-tion and consideration from a car dealership as I received at Kendall Ford of Wasilla,” J Schnider of Wasilla is quoted as saying in a testimonial on the dealership’s website that illustrates why Kendall is Best of the Valley. “The patience and understanding shown to me by absolutely everyone associated with Kendall Ford was unbelievable.”
