The rolling terrain at Grandview Golf Clubmakes for a unique golfing experience
By Stuart HirschThe Herald Bulletin
ANDERSON — An avid golfer, travelingsalesman and Pendleton resident, WarrenHubble can hit the links just about any-where.
But the course he comes back to againand again, the one he calls home, is Grand-view Golf Course.
“Like a lot of places, it’s the people whomake the difference,” said Hubble, vicepresident of Grandview’s Men’s Club.
Grandview has “had its ups and downs”over the years because of budget cuts, heconcedes, but the combination of a chal-lenging course and friendly atmospheremake the overall golfing experience there
thoroughly rewarding.“There are a lot of courses that might be
in better shape, but for what you pay to play and the great camaraderie, Grandview is a terrific place,” Hubble said.
A lot of people in Madison County appar-ently agree with his assessment.
Grandview was named the best golf course in Madison County in The HeraldBulletin’s annual Best of Madison survey.
Built in 1925, Grandview is one of theoldest municipal golf courses in Indiana, according to Anderson’s city website.
At 5,554 yards, it’s a relatively 18-holecourse, said Todd Winlan, who’s managedthe course since 1997, and has been golf-ing there since he was a kid.
What makes the course particularly
unique in the flatlands of Central Indiana isits rolling terrain, Winlan said.
“Grandview is a good test for a golfer because it has a couple undulating greensso managing your game to get the right angle to the pin is very important on thiscourse,” he said. Another special feature isthat the first and second holes follow thepath of the White River.
During his tenure as Grandview’s golf pro, a number of improvements haveoccurred Winlan said. Golf cart paths wereadded in 1999-2000, an outside pavilion wasbuilt, and the pro shop was expanded.
As a leisure activity, golf has been hit hard by continuing economic challenges, but Winlan said he’s worked to win back members by promoting business and orga-
nization golf outings, and offering seasonpasses at a reasonable cost.
Like Hubble, Cindy Clendenen, presi-dent of Grandview’s women’s club, couldgolf a lot of places. She joined in 1999 toplay with her father and grandfather.
She said the women’s group is one of thelargest in the state, and one of the reasonsis the laid back atmosphere. On “Women’sGuest Day,” which occurs in the early sum-mer, the chance to play Grandview regu-larly draws more than 70 women golfersfrom around the state.
“I wouldn’t even consider going to anoth-er club,” she said.

Best bartender keeps it simpleBy Baylee PulliamThe Herald Bulletin
ANDERSON — David Allen is a “Crown-on-the-rocks” kind of guy.
“Keep it simple,” said Allen, reachingunder the bar as he shovels ice into a glass. “Everybody wants all these complicateddrinks, but I don’t need anything fancy.”
For Allen, “simple” is a departure fromhis work tending Hoosier Park’s Double R Bar, an island awash in slot machines, table games and carnivalesque neon glitz.
But he’s not complaining.“Let’s just say life is pretty easy,” said
Allen, flashing a crooked, toothy grin. “I don’t have too many bad days.”
The festive casino floor atmosphere is a big part of that, he said — after all, who could have a bad day when every day is a little like Mardi Gras?
The other part is the people, like Mari-beth Spencer, whose Jack and Coke is waiting for her before her foot hits the top step leading up to the bar.
“What can I say?” said Spencer, of West-field. “He knows what I like.”
Like most bartenders, Allen fills many roles — including confidant, buddy and amateur psychologist — for many people. “It’s like any bar,” he said. “When I look at their I.D.s, they say Ohio, Michigan, Illi-nois and, yeah, Indiana...I’ll sit here and have a conversation with them.”
That takes talent, considering he does it while running laps behind the circular bar, collecting bottles and making drinks.
The key is authenticity: “Don’t try to besomeone you’re not,” he said. “It makes it easier to connect with people.”
And, while he can’t give his customersgambling pointers — Hoosier Park employees aren’t allowed to play the casino games — he does offer friendly advice on how to get the biggest bang for
their buck at the bar.Instead of pushing big-ticket items, he
points to the bargains, like the Long IslandIced Tea, which costs just over $4.
Allen’s friendly personality is “part of what makes him so attractive,” Spencer said. “The others (bartenders) are nice
and all, but you’ll see people come up here and wait for him to be free.”
For Allen, landing a casino bar-tending job was “pure luck.”
Fresh from school, he landed a job work-ing the door at Harry’s Chocolate Shop, a West Lafayette drinks joint targeting Pur-
due University alumni. One day they toldhim he was training on the bar.
He worked at Harry’s for about seven years, and started at Hoosier Park in 2009.
“Now there’s nothing else I want to do,” he said, leaning against the bar. “I love my job.”

Best nurse celebrating 40 years at St. Vincent AndersonBy Abbey DoyleThe Herald Bulletin
ANDERSON — In four decades of nursing, Nancy Pitcock has worked inevery area of the hospitalinvolving nursing.
All 40 of her years in thefield have been spent at St.Vincent Regional HospitalAnderson, with the last four years as the chief nursing officer.
“I always wanted to helpother people,” Pitcock said.“Nursing felt like the right thing for me to do.”
She was humbled at being named the best nurse in Madison County by The Herald Bulletinreaders.
“It is an honor to be rec-ognized for the work I doevery day,” Pitcock said. “I
don’t feel it is any moreimportant than what every-one else is doing. It isalways an honor to be rec-ognized for doing some-thing that I love to do. It issomething I have a passionabout and enjoy helpingstaff and patients.”
She received her regis-tered nurse diploma fromHoly Cross School of Nurs-ing, a bachelor’s degree insocial work from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Col-lege and a master’s in nurs-ing in 2012 from Ball StateUniversity. She worked inthe emergency department for the majority of that time, 1975 to 2004.
Pitcock said she’d want-ed to be a nurse from a very young age and felt like she had something togive them to help them in
their situation. In her cur-rent role as chief nursingofficer, she isn’t givingpatients direct care, but she ensures the nursingstaff has everything they need to best help patients.
One of her favorite posi-tions has been as a hospicenurse. Pitcock was the first the hospital had.
“I worked with the physi-cians and helped develop a plan of care one-on-onewith patients during themost vulnerable times of their lives,” she said. “Ienjoyed that.”
Pitcock, with other hos-pital staff, has been travel-ing to Haiti for nearly 20years for medical missionswhere she assists in sur-gery.
St. Vincent President Tom VanOsdol said Pit-
cock has “tremendous experience,” and her com-passionate caring for every individual patient has her living out the hospital’s missions and core values.
“Her support of our nurs-ing staff is amazing,” he said. “She is a nurse’s nurse and a leader in our organization. She regularly is out on the patient units rolling up her sleeves and helping out delivering care to do whatever is needed.”
VanOsdol said Pitcock is very deserving of the hon-or and an invaluable leader and representative of the hospital.
Pitcock has been mar-ried to Jerry for 40 years. They have two sons — Joshua (married to Katie)and Justin — and a 9-year-old grandson, Madden.
Nancy Pitcock knew she wanted to be in healthcare from a very young age

ANDERSON — Ever had a class in which your teacher tellsyou to look at the whole picture inorder to fully understand theassignment? That’s how Dr. Mark Stinson looks at the family whenit comes to medicine.
A family physician at his ownpractice, located at 2101 JacksonSt., and practicing medicine inAnderson since 1986, Stinson wasvoted as Madison County’s best doctor for 2013.
“He’s extremely caring. He real-ly embodies what a family physi-cian should be,” said Dr. Gary Brazel, St. Vincent AndersonRegional’s Chief Medical Officer.
The two worked together dur-ing the 1990’s and took care of one another’s patients when theother was out. Brazel said he wasable to see the quality of care andcompassion then.
Stinson understands the family
dynamic and his patients receiveexcellent care and attention todetail, he said.
It’s vital to know what’s goingon in the family health wise asone person’s condition may affect or have led to another’s, Stinsonnoted, adding it’s important to
explain things to the immediatefamily so they can efficiently dealwith an illness.
“Being able to know everybody in the family makes a more well-rounded approach,” he said.
His decision to go into family medicine had a lot to do with “the
continuity of care, watching thefamily grow.”
As for becoming a doctor in thefirst place, Stinson said his father,Dr. Bill Stinson, was a huge inspi-ration. He too was a family physi-cian and seeing “the satisfactionhe got” from his job and theappreciation his patient’s showedhim really influenced Stinson.
They have a similar approach, mentality, philosophy. They didwork together for 10 years.
And Stinson said it takes a whole team to make a great prac-tice. Much of the staff he workswith has been with him for yearsand knows the patients like he
does. He added he’s blessed tohave that.
In addition to being a dedicatedphysician, despite how consumingmedicine can be, Brazel said, Stin-son is a great family man, as well.
Stinson said he just has to bud-get his time accordingly to meet the needs of both his patients andfamily -- wife, Andrea, and sonsWes, a mechanical engineer livingin Fort Wayne, and Alex, a student at Ball State University whose golf career Stinson follows.
“I don’t know how I do it, I just do it,” he said. “An understandingwife and family is what makes it work. That’s the key.”

Margarita makerkeeps regularsat Riviera Maya
By Jack MolitorThe Herald Bulletin
ANDERSON — Even onthe coldest weeknight with ice on the streets andfrozen rain falling fromthe sky, you’ll find regu-lars bellied up at the bar at Riviera Maya for margari-tas.
That’s one of the reasons the Mexican restaurant on South Scatterfield Roadwon Best Margarita in thisyear’s Best of Madison County competition pre-sented by The Herald Bul-letin.
The restaurant, formerly known as Real Hacienda, has a second location down-town on 14th Street, andthey sell the same margari-ta recipe, but to get the version that makes the stopa favorite among locals, you’ll usually need to headto the Scatterfield Roadlocation and ask for JosueQuezada.
A manager and desig-nated margarita maker,Quezada, 32, said he’s been mixing almost sincehe came of legal drinkingage. Quezada, who is very protective of the recipe heuses, said flavor is themost important aspect of a good margarita.
“Definitely flavor,” Quezada. “I try to make it so they can’t taste the alco-
hol, but they can feel it.That’s what makes a good margarita.”
Camille Singleton and Tiffany Hancock, both of Anderson, were stopped in late on a Thursday night to get a margarita fix. Self-described as regulars, both women said Quezada’s margaritas are the best in the county.
“They’re great. Good ser-vice and good drinks,” Sin-gleton said.
In a time when consum-ers are looking for deals, Hancock said Riviera Maya’s margaritas deliver.
“They’re the best in town. They’re strong and they’re cheap, too. They have goodspecials here,” Hancock said. “They already know what I like.”
The ladies also said theauthentic Mexican food keeps them coming back.Singleton said the food is a bonus in an area where it’s hard to find good Mexican cuisine.
“This is the best Mexicanrestaurant, to me,” Single-ton said.
Quezada said his job ismost rewarding when cus-tomers praise his work andkeep coming back.
“What I enjoy the most is when they drink it, and they go out to everyone else, ‘they have good drinksthere,’” Quezada said.
“They’re the best in town. They’re strong and they’re cheap, too.
They have good specials here. They already know what I like.”
